Hey, I'm tired of wasting DVD+R's on temp builds of beta OS's. I was wondering if anyone knew how to take an ISO and put it onto something like a USB Flash Drive and have it boot from that.

I know how to get my system to boot from a flash drive, but I dont know how to port an ISO to the drive itself.

How about considering getting a DVD+/-RW?

I've tried them...I can honestly say that DVD+RW's are the most pathetic attempt at recyclable data storage I've ever seen. Half of the time when you re-write a disk, you end up with a blank disk that can't be re-written. Certainly not worth the price they charge.

I have 2 Sony DVD-RW and I have re-write them for around 10 times each (Vista beta testing). Till now the discs are still working fine.

Nonetheless, I still want to put ISO on a flash drive. I suppose I have bad luck with DVD-RW's. Plus, it would be nice to install DVD ISO's onto my older laptop without switching out my DVD drives.

Have you tried making a virtual drive on the flash drive and then mounting the ISO?

I did attempt that briefly, but I couldn't find any options for creating virtual drive on the flash drive in either Alcohol or Nero. I heard that Nero 7 could write ISO to flash drives, but I only have Nero 6. Can anyone confirm this?

Best bet would probably be to extract the ISO to the flash drive and then just make it bootable. A good resource for this is: http://www.bootdisk.com/pendrive.htm

HP has a small utility for making flash drives bootable as well. "It will work with any non-HP flash drive"

Hey outcast. I don't mean to be a dick or anything, but when someone like me is searching the net looking for information on a method for doing something (this case booting an iso from a usb key) it's a real piss off when you read the forum and someone starts arguing a different method than what the forum was started with. In other words, if you don't know how to use the method suggested and get good results, don't comment. Sorry if I piss you off with this comment, it just pisses me off when someone has to come on and waste everyones time with information that everybody already knows. Everyone here knows about re-writable cd's and dvd's, what we want to know is how to boot off a usb.

I 2nd that jman... not matter where you go some guy has to throw unhelpful remarks in. Like you said... if you can't give a helpful answer shut the **** up.

Now...I have been trying to find a solution for this... there are some, but crap... they are a million steps long... Have you had any luck finding a simple solution?

    thanks,
    James

Well, if you one of these hard-headed, who would not accept any other way of achieving your goal, then sure a reply with a different method suggestion would piss you off. Otherwise you would consider the suggestion and if you don't like it keep waiting for a different suggestion or look it up yourself somewhere else. Sometimes an information that "everyone knows already" might not be an obvious for some, and since the original poster mentioned only the "R" media, that would be my first thought about RW too.
Personally I have no idea how to make a flash drive bootable and sure would love to find a way to do that, but as an alternative I see no problem in using RW media for such purpose. Or use Virtual PC and be done with it.

And finally, at least Outcast tried be useful in he's posts, not like yourself, registering on the forum just to waste everyone's time talking off topic.

i have been searching for the same information as the thread starter and i agree with the other poster. It's annoying. i need a bootable flash drive because netbooks dont have dvd drives.
