Google I/O 2013 Underway: Watch For Updates

Google’s I/O annual conference is ramping up at San Francisco’s Moscone Center. Last year, in the conference keynote, the company took its biggest-yet dive into hardware when it introduced the Nexus 7 tablet, Google Glass, and the ill-fated Nexus Q. The secret is out on Glass, of course: this year, there’s a pavilion inside the conference center where I’m sure they’ll be showing off applications for it. (Quite a few of the people in the endless lines here are wearing their own, too.) Anticipating the announcements at I/O is practically its own industry, but it’s easy to guess that there will be announcements from all the major pots in which Google has its many thousands of (tapping) fingers. Android, search, Chrome, mapping, and all the other ways in which the behemoth of Mountain View is watching what you do. You can watch the keynote talk (talks, really) streamed online from the main conference link above, but this story will be updated with highlights of the announcements, as well with stories that readers contribute.

Google I/O: Watch The Live Video Stream Here

google-ioGoogle’s annual I/O conference in San Francisco kicks off this morning at 9am PT/noon ET and, as usual, the good folks from Mountain View are making a live video stream of the event available for all of you who can’t be there in person. Unlike other years, when Google ran two separate keynotes on the first two days of I/O, the company is only running a single keynote this time around. Last year’s skydiving antics definitely set the bar very high for this year’s event and so far, we haven’t heard how Google plans to top this today. We do expect to hear quite a bit about Google+, however, and the rumor mill also predicts the launch of the next version of Google Talk/Hangouts, some news about Compute Engine and, of course, Google Glass – the star of last year’s event. The keynote is scheduled to last for a whopping three hours, so grab your coffee, donuts or popcorn, kick back, and enjoy the show. If you can’t watch the video, you can also find our play-by-play live blog here.

Watch A House Of Cards Spoof With Kevin Spacey And Obama Make A Buzzfeed Pot Joke

Screen shot 2013-04-28 at 2.49.07 AMNetflix’s “House of Cards” took center stage at the annual White House Correspondents Dinner, with an official spoof about the back room jockeying over seat assignments at the coveted press dinner. The clip even gave a big nod to Buzzfeed’s alternative BBQ held during the actual dinner. Despite their admirable popularity, Buzzfeed is not a member of the White House Correspondents Association and didn’t get a table. “A colonoscopy would be cooler than that dinner,” Buzzfeed Editor and Chief, Ben Smith, says to Kevin Spacey’s character. Buzzfeed even got a shoutout from the President himself during his annual stand up routine, “I Remember When BuzzFeed Was Just Something I Did In College Around 2 A.M,” said the President in (yes) an obvious reference to his pot-smoking college days. Watch the whole routine below: The House Of Cards cast was out in full force at DC’s stargazing weekend. There are a lot of entertainers that stroll into town, but Kevin Spacey was the uber-celebrity. Even at Tammy Haddad’s famous Garden Brunch, the A-list crowd couldn’t help but turn heads upon Spacey’s arrival. On top of viewers, House of Cards has made Netflix the talk of the town among policymakers, which could be worth more political capital than the $ 1M they spent on lobbying last year. It seemed like everyone was happy to talk with Netflix’s representatives, even just as an excuse to dish about the drama and get some inside details about Capitol Hill’s new favorite pastime. Interestingly enough, Netflix’s other original series, Hemlock Grove, may be off to a better start in terms of viewers, but doesn’t seem to have the same buzz. An obvious but valuable lesson: influential fans are worth a lot.

Watch A Drone Visit College Football To Give Coaches Better Perspective

Screen shot 2013-04-20 at 11.23.35 AMUniversity of Tennessee coach Butch Jones wanted to get an eagle-eye view of his players, but apparently didn’t have the resources to spend it on the kinds of expensive, cable-suspended Skycam equipment used by broadcasters. Instead, he sent up a drone, in what appears to be the first–or one of the first–uses of unmanned aerial vehicles in college football. A Vine (above) showing the coaches warming up the drone for practice immediately started making the rounds on sports blogs. According to Outside magazine, military drone technology was quickly adopted by the entertainment industry, and is becoming more pervasive for ariel footage, “Even at upwards of $ 5,000 per day, a drone runs a fraction of the cost of a helicopter rental,” explains Joe Spring. A number of policymakers are proposing moratoriums on law surveillance drones, until privacy laws can catch up to the quickly evolving technology. But, flying cameras are completely legit for sports. Interestingly, Coach Jones credits the experiment to a Google-style mass innovation approach to management: “It’s a number of guys. It’s our support staff, it’s [Sports Technology Coordinator] Joe Harrington. It’s everyone just always trying to make the program better each and every day. That’s the culture that we’re building here. It doesn’t matter if it’s our secretaries, our equipment staff, our training staff, or our cooks. How can we make Tennessee football better each and every day?”

Red to start performing Epic Dragon sensor updates tomorrow at its NAB booth

Red has announced that Dragon sensor updates will start tomorrow for Epic-M and Epic-X owners for $ 8,500 and, interestingly, is letting owners (and the public) see the operation for themselves at its NAB booth. The new sensor will bring 6K resolution, 120 fps at 5K and 15+ stops of dynamic range in a slightly larger format, according to Red. Epic owners who wait until Thursday or later will be able to grab the update for $ 9,500, and filmmakers hoping for a new Epic-M with the Dragon instead of the Mysterium-X sensor will be able to pre-order tomorrow for $ 29,000 or so. Meanwhile, there’s good news for those who ordered the more budget-minded Scarlet — they’ll be able to upgrade to the Epic directly or get a 6k Dragon sensor and ASICs, with pricing details coming tomorrow and pre-orders launching on Thursday. Red may have a tough road to hoe with recent NAB news from the likes of BlackMagic Design and Vision Systems, but how many companies will actually let you watch your camera get operated on? Watch this smart foam chair ‘grow’ and unpack itself

Watch this smart foam chair that 'grows like popcorn'

Sometimes we dream. We dream of a world with no more flat-pack furniture, no more obtuse construction manuals and no more missing screws. Smart foam tech might get us closer to those admittedly small-time dreams. Using cross links within the foam’s particle arrangement, regardless of how much the structure is compressed, it’ll spring back to the predesigned shape. Designer Carl de Smet adds that the product would expand at a set temperature getting a little doughy in the middle, then more solid at room temperature.

He also demonstrates another smart foam structure which changes when a current is fed through it. Electricity provides the heat that transforms the rolled-up structure into a flat one, with the current experimental version taking around five minutes to completely settle. Commercial products which are apparently only about a year to 18 months away and as de Smet details in the video, could land on store shelves in a compacted rolled-up form for “unpacking” back home. These early examples can even be adjusted, if for some reason you suddenly decide you wanted a coffee table, not a chair. Sit back and see how it literally unfolds after the break.

Watch Zuck, Bill Gates, Jack Dorsey, & Others In Short Film To Inspire Kids To Learn How To Code

markcodeorgCode.org, the new non-profit aimed at encouraging computer science education launched last month by entrepreneur and investor brothers Ali and Hadi Partovi, has assembled an all-star group of the world’s most well-known and successful folks with programming skills to talk about how learning to code has changed their lives — and isn’t quite as hard as people might think. As you can see in the five minute embedded above, the short film (nine minutes in its full length version) which was directed by Lesley Chilcott, known as the producer of Waiting for Superman and An Inconvenient Truth, is a who’s who featuring Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Jack Dorsey, Drew Houston, Tony Hsieh, Miami Heat player Chris Bosh (he studied programming in college), and many more. It’s a very human look at what can certainly seem to many as a dry or intimidating subject, and it’s really a pleasure to watch. The watchability is key, Hadi Partovi told me in a phone call this past week, because the purpose of the film is to appeal to the mainstream and particularly young people. It’s an important grassroots start on a very big problem. Partovi said that Code.org sees the first step here as simply raising awareness. “Enrollment rates in programming classes are low, but what is worse is that schools aren’t even teaching it, even though this is the fastest growing segment of jobs in the country,” Partovi said, adding that nine out of ten U.S. schools don’t offer computer programming classes at all — and those that do often treat it as an elective that doesn’t count toward graduation, the same as, say woodworking. Indeed, he pointed to figures (which are represented in the accompanying graphic and more on the Code.org site) that show the massive gap between the number of available programming jobs and the people graduating from American schools with the skills to actually do them — a hiring problem of which most people in the tech industry are painfully aware. And filling in that gap of 1 million jobs could add as much as $ 500 billion to the U.S. economy — a fiscal cliff-sized number. Partovi put it like this: “It’s a big issue for our country. We’re trying to use immigration reform to help solve the problem, and that’s important, but the long-term fix really is that we should teach more people these skills.” So what can

Naturally, the Kisai OTO also a packs time read-out, splitting hours, minutes and seconds (read vertically) across two lines. Above and below that, you’ll find the flickering equalizer, although anyone that finds it a little too distracting during the day can switch them off. You can even go completely the other way and nix the watch display for party hours. There’s still the requisite alarm and date settings and you can pick from blue, green red or amber light-up displays. All color options are all paired with a black anodized aluminum strap, while the watch can be charged through USB.
