NASA’s Voyager 1 probe is tantalizingly close to the edge of the solar system, but predicting when it will finally pop free into interstellar space is a challenging proposition, mission team members say.

Accel Telecom unveils Voyager, an Android smartphone that wants to stay in the car (video)
Remember the days of yore when carphones used to be attached to the car — permanently? Accel Telecom wants to take you back there with the Voyager, an Android smartphone with car-centric functions that can stay put in your vehicle. To start with, the handset will feature a dedicated Waze launcher key for GPS navigation duties, and will also sport “high level noise reduction and echo cancellation,” along with hands-free voice activation. Other features include a 3G-WiFi hotspot, a “driver-centric” design with large physical keys, multiple car-focused apps and “crystal clear, echo free sound quality.” Interestingly, it’ll also connect to your vehicle’s on-board diagnostics system via RS232 or Bluetooth and ping you if any parts are about to break off. Accel told us that it’ll launch Voyager in Europe and the US “with operators that offer a second sim device,” to let you share your current phone number. There’s no sign of pricing yet, but there is PR and a video after the break.

Moog shows off one-of-a-kind Aluminum Voyager and 10th Anniversary Minimoog Voyager at NAMM (eyes-on)
A couple of months back, Moog announced its limited edition 24-karat gold clad Minimoog Voyager to celebrate the 10th anniversary of said analog synth. But here at NAMM 2013, the outfit is showing of the latest bit of unannounced handiwork from its in-house machine shop. Feast your eyes on the Aluminum Voyager: a one-of-a-kind unit that is housed in the rugged silver material and features all blue panel lighting to complete the look — right down to the rivets. We also took a bit of time to lay our peepers on that golden model, too. Our snaps don’t really do it justice, but the combination of the shiny finish with translucent control knobs and accents of Japanese Awabi pearl make for one of the most dapper instruments we’ve seen. But don’t take our word for it, dive in to the gallery below to take a closer look at the pair.

Voyager 1 Hits Rumble Strips At the Edge of the Solar System
Voyager 1, So Close To Interstellar Space That We Can Taste It!
mphall21 writes “Voyager 1 is nearing the edge of the ‘magnetic highway’ of our solar system and scientists believe this is the final area the space probe must cross before entering interstellar space. The Voyager team infers this region is still inside of our heliosphere because the direction of the magnetic field has not changed. The direction of this field is expected to change when Voyager goes into interstellar space. ‘Although Voyager 1 still is inside the sun’s environment, we now can taste what it’s like on the outside because the particles are zipping in and out on this magnetic highway,’ said Edward Stone, Voyager project scientist based at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena. ‘We believe this is the last leg of our journey to interstellar space. Our best guess is it’s likely just a few months to a couple years away. The new region isn’t what we expected, but we’ve come to expect the unexpected from Voyager.’ Moving at 10.5 miles per second, the space probe is the most distant man-made object from Earth. The space craft has been in operation for 35 years and receives regular commands and transmits data back to the Deep Space Network.”

New Signs Voyager Is Nearing Interstellar Space
sighted writes “Yesterday, someone tweeting for the Voyager 2 spacecraft posted: ‘Interesting. Compare my data 4 high-energy nucleons w V1′s That increase is attracting attention!’ Today, NASA says that scientists looking at this rapid rise draw closer to an inevitable but historic conclusion — that humanity’s first emissary to interstellar space is on the edge of our solar system. Project scientist Ed Stone said, ‘The latest data indicate that we are clearly in a new region where things are changing more quickly. It is very exciting. We are approaching the solar system’s frontier.’”

Voyager Mobile shakes off network issues, launches a few days behind schedule
It’s tough being the new kid in town — ask Voyager Mobile, an up and coming MVNO that had its launch delayed by a “malicious network attack” last week. The tenacious firm may have missed its planned May 15th launch, but managed to pull things together in time for the weekend, piggybacking unlimited talk, text and data off of Sprint’s CDMA and WiMAX network for $ 40 a month. A basic unlimited voice plan is also available to the tune of $ 20, without data allowances, of course.

With $1.3M From Voyager & More, Chirpify Brings Direct Music, Ticket Sales To Twitter
In February, Chirpify rebranded from SellSimp.ly and launched a Twitter commerce platform that allowed brands and consumers to buy, sell, donate and transact through tweets without leaving the comfort of Twitter. Since launch, Chirpify has seen growing traction, thanks in part to a promotional campaign launched at SXSW, called “Tweet-a-Beer,” which resulted in a huge boost of traffic for Chirpify, with two new users signing up every second.
Today, the startup’s direct sales model for Twitter is officially getting further validation — this time in the form of capital — as the startup announced that it has secured $ 1.3 million in series A financing. The new round of investment, which adds to the $ 50K in seed it raised from its incubator Upstart Labs, was led by Voyager Capital, with participation from Geoff Entress, BuddyTV CEO Andy Liu, former Facebook exec Rudy Gadre, Hootsuite CEO Ryan Holmes, and TiE Oregon Angels.

Voyager and the Coming Great Hiatus In Deep Space
MatthewVD writes “Some time in the next decade, the Voyager probes will run out of juice and finally go silent after almost a half century of exploration. John Rennie writes that the lack of any meaningful effort to follow up with a mission to interstellar space shows the “fragile, inconsistent state of space exploration.” It’s particularly frustrating since the Voyagers have tantalized astronomers with a glimpse into about how the sun’s magnetic field protects us from (or exposes us to) cosmic rays. Have we gone as far as we’re willing to go in space?”

Voyager Probes Give Us ET’s View
astroengine writes “For the first time, scientists have been able to measure a type of radiation streaming out from the Milky Way that in other galaxies has been linked to the birthplaces of young, hot stars. There was no way to make our own galaxy’s measurement of the radiation, known as Lyman-alpha, until the Voyager probes were about 40 times as far away from the sun as Earth — any closer and the solar system’s own emissions drowned out the fainter glow from the galaxy.”

Corsair Flash Voyager, GT, Survivor get a USB 3.0 boost

Call us jaded, but most USB flash drives just don’t get the juices flowing like a new tablet or smartphone. Nonetheless, they’ve become a critical component of many a workflow, and for a device where speed is key, a USB 3.0 boost is certainly welcome. And Corsair did just that with its Flash Voyager, Flash Voyager GT, and “adventure-proof” Flash Survivor lines. The entry level Voyagers ship in 8GB ($ 17) and 16GB ($ 24) capacities, while the premium model offers 32GB and 64GB of storage, for $ 59 and $ 129, respectively. 8GB ($ 28) and 16GB ($ 35) drives in the ruggedized Survivor series are constructed of aircraft-grade aluminum and are water-proof all the way down to 200 meters — that algae-covered Survivor you found 650 feet down at the bottom of the ocean floor? Yup, it probably still works. The new drives are shipping now, and you can find the full scoop from Corsair just past the break.
