Google unveils Samung Galaxy S 4 running stock Android Jelly Bean

Google unveils Samung Galaxy S 4 running stock Android Jelly Bean

Google just dropped a pretty big surprise during its opening day I/O keynote. It’s taken the wraps off a new edition of Samsung’s Galaxy S 4 that runs stock Android Jelly Bean. The device itself is fully unlocked and packing LTE support for AT&T and T-Mobile, along with 16GB of storage and what Google promises will be prompt system updates. Not surprisingly, this won’t quite be the budget-friendly off-contract option that the Nexus 4 is — the phone will run $ 649 when it hits Google Play on June 26th.

Nikon unveils 1 Nikkor 32mm lens with extra-fast f/1.2 aperture, manual focus

Nikon unveils 1 Nikkor 32mm lens with extrafast f12 aperture

Mirrorless camera fans who’ve gone the Nikon 1 route have had a fair selection of official lenses to choose from, but not the Holy Grail of a truly fast telephoto lens. Nikon may have just produced that ideal glass today in its new 1 Nikkor 32mm lens. It shoots at a reasonably 86mm equivalent distance, but with an extremely bright and quick f/1.2 aperture — theoretically, making it one of the better 1 Nikkor lenses for low-light shooting, action and portraits with soft backgrounds. The 32mm could also be the perfect fit for control junkies, as it’s the first Nikon-made mirrorless lens with a manual focus ring. While this premium photography will carry a suitably elevated $ 900 price when the 32mm lens ships in June, the cost might be worthwhile for those who want speedy optics in a very small size.

Nokia unveils the touchscreen Asha 501 with new software platform, we go handson video

One or more additional members are expected to join Nokia’s Lumia line-up next Tuesday, but today the company has chosen New Delhi as the stage to unveil the Asha 501, a new touchscreen handset that further blurs the line between featurephone and smartphone. While the last touchscreen Asha Nokia launched was very much a tweaked version of its predecessors, the 501 has a radically different design akin to the latest QWERTY device stamped with the Asha brand. The aesthetics aren’t all that’s changed, however, as the 501 is running a re-engineered OS Nokia’s dubbed the “Asha software platform” (the fruits of last year’s Smarterphone acquisition). We were able to spend a little quality time with the handset, so head past the break for more details and our initial impressions.

SpiderOak Unveils Hive, Streamlines Zero-Knowledge Privacy Storage

hive-pr-image-hive-illustrationAn old saying states that “security is inversely proportional to convenience.” This explains the slow adoption of many important security technologies. HTTPS, the secure version of the HTTP protocol used to browse the world wide web, has been around for more than two decades, but it’s only been in the last couple of years that it has been enabled by default on many major websites.

Sony unveils Anycast Touch allinone production system at NAB

In addition to announcing pricing for its 55- and 65-inch 4K TVs at its NAB press event, Sony unveiled updates to its Anycast studio-in-a-box. Sony has been offering its live broadcasting all-in-one for quite some time, but the Anycast Touch (AWS-750) unveiled today features several updates, including sliding dual touch displays. (The product looks more like a beefed-up Duo 11 than a bulky suitcase, which can’t be said about earlier models from the Anycast line.) A tilt-screen function lets you split audio- and video-editing functions between the two panels, and you’ll be able to bring up video sources just by tapping their thumbnails on-screen.

Aside from the new touchscreen design, the Anycast Touch offers all the A/V essentials: a video switcher, audio mixer, a special effects generator, an encoder and a scale converter. Video output tops out at 1080p with 10-bit processing, though other specs, such as display size, are TBA. Sony hasn’t discussed pricing yet, but it did reveal that the Anycast Touch will go on sale in September — we imagine additional details will surface before that far-off date.

Library of Congress unveils plan to preserve early US sound recordings

Historic audio recordings aren’t exactly easy to access and play back since they’re often in obscure or aging formats and sit within giant repositories and private collections, but the Library of Congress is gearing up to help change that for researchers and the average joe. The outfit’s freshly announced National Recording Preservation Plan is headlined by a recommendation to create a publicly accessible national directory of sound recordings that’ll act as an “authoritative discography” with details regarding their production and where copies are housed. You’ll still have to take a trip to a library to hear the recordings for the time being, but the Library of Congress is hoping to hammer out licensing agreements that would allow for online streaming. Developing new preservation standards and creating university-based degree programs for audio archiving are also among the 32 short- and long-term recommendations spelled out by the document.
