Home Tweet Home: A House with Its Own Voice on Twitter

A techie’s San Francisco home has its own Twitter feed. Will yours be next?

At first glance, you’d never guess there’s anything unusual about Tom Coates’s San Francisco home. Nestled at the end of a narrow passageway on a side street, it’s a peaceful, sunny house decorated with modern furniture and bright posters that say things like “Machines help us work” and “Make your own path.”

Twitter Announces “Twttr” – Will Start Charging $5 A Month If You Want To Tweet Using Vowels

Word_Puzzle (1)Vowels aren’t really necessary in today’s digital age, are they? Twitter doesn’t think so, as it announced a new “two-tiered” service including its free model called “Twttr.” You can only tweet without vowels though. Want the vowels back? Pony up $ 5 a month. Seems like a pretty sweet deal to me. Luckily, Twitter really cares about its users and will offer up the “sometimes Y” free of charge…forever. Also free are vowels in link URLs. Whew. If you’ve seen the text messages from anyone under 25 years old, you know that vowels often get left out already. This is pretty forward-thinking of Twitter, as it attempts to monetize its older set of users who can still speak and write using a real language. Here’s what Twitter had to say about the disruptive approach to scl ntwrkng: We’re doing this because we believe that by eliminating vowels, we’ll encourage a more efficient and “dense” form of communication. We also see an opportunity to diversify our revenue stream. Here’s a mockup, with a condensed version of the legendary Barack Obama re-election tweet: Take that, Fcbk. How did they come up with this amazing concept? Michael Sippey, Twitter’s VP of Product shared the brainery that went behind this genius move to beef up its revenue before next year’s IPO: I was carpooling home after Twitter’s seventh birthday party with my head filled with images from our past, like our early logo where we spelled it TWTTR, in neon green toothpaste. And then Prince’s song “I would die 4 U” came on the radio. I felt like there was something there, but I wasn’t sure what or how to bring it to market. Then later that night, I was watching “Wheel of Fortune” with @adambain, and a contestant yelled out ‘I wanna buy a vowel’. Everything just sort of clicked. Adam and I turned to each other and high-fived. It was one of those product moments that just felt like magic. The company had some other revenue-producing ideas up its sleeve and will introduce extra characters, past 140, for a price: In addition to our normal suite of Promoted Products for advertisers, we are now also offering a single character extension, expanding the length of a Tweet to 141 characters, for those moments when you need just one more character to finish your thought. The price of the extra character is based on a

LG’s been stepping up its mobile game recently, with the Optimus G being the firm’s clearest display of podium-position ambitions yet. Brad Keslowski Makes NASCAR History With First In-Vehicle Tweet & Pic During A Race

AmtWD3yCMAAoLIaAs I’m writing this the Daytona 500 is under a red flag due to a bizarre accident. Juan Pablo Montoya’s #42 car malfunctioned under a yellow caution and hit a massive race track jet dryer directly in the fuel center, causing a large fire on the track. Both the racer and the driver of the truck are fine.

So what’s a driver to do during a red flag? Well, Brad Keslowski just happened to have his iPhone on him from pre-race activities and is putting it to good use. He just tweeted a pic of track fire from inside his race car but is also fielding questions on Twitter (@keselowski) while waiting for the race to restart. Per the FOX sportscasters NASCAR race car drivers are now having holsters built for their phones for testing purposes. Apparently Keslowski still had his on him.

Journalist Arrested For Tweet Deported to Saudi Arabia

New submitter cosmicaug writes with an update to yesterday’s report that journalist Hamza Kashgari had been arrested by Malaysian police acting on a request conveyed from the Saudi government via Interpol. Now, says the BBC, “Police confirmed to the BBC that Hamza Kashgari was sent back to Saudi Arabia on Sunday despite protests from human rights groups. Mr Kashgari’s controversial tweet last week sparked more than 30,000 responses and several death threats. Insulting the prophet is considered blasphemous in Islam and is punishable by death in Saudi Arabia. Mr Kashgari, 23, fled Saudi Arabia last week and was detained upon his arrival in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.” Writes cosmicaug: “Sadly, the most likely outcome is that they are going to execute this man for three tweets.”

The KFC Colonel’s Scholars winner, announced December 15, will receive up to $ 5,000 per year to pursue a bachelor’s degree at a public university in his or her home state. … Other organizations, perhaps weary of wading through applicants’ lengthy essays, also are offering eager students ways to turn a 140-character message into money for college. … Why a tweet? Jodi Schafer, the University of Iowa’s director of MBA admissions and financial aid, told USA Today that application essays were ‘becoming unoriginal.’ She said ‘we’re hoping that incorporating social media in the process will help bring back some of that creativity.’”

Time To Tweet The Art: Museum-Analytics.org Keeps Tabs On Curatorial Social Media

Screen Shot 2011-11-28 at 2.19.15 PMTo paraphrase Cracker, I suspect what the world needs now is another method to assess the social metrics of various museums around the world like I need a hole in the head, but presumably this information is important to someone out there, so here goes.

Museum-Analytics.org is a site with a simple mission: to calculate the social reach of various museums. The service uses various and sundry sources as well as Twitter and Facebook to find news and information about almost 3000 museums around the world.

For example, you can see trends at the Van Gogh Museum (Motto: “It doesn’t cost an ear and a leg to get in!”) including new Facebook likes, Tweets, comments mentioning the museum, and engaging content created for and about the museum. I could see this as a boon to curators and directors alike and valuable to museum fans who are trying to push these staid organizations into, at the very least, the 20th century.
