We learned just a few days ago that they would be arriving today, and sure enough, Apple has opened the gates to their new iMac. The 21.5-inch is set to ship in “1-3 business days,” while the 27-inch model has a longer delay of “2-3 weeks.” However, both models are available now to purchase starting

Sony’s Alpha A99 gets torn apart, exposes its 35mm full-frame sensor (video)
There’s a good chance ripping apart Sony’s Alpha A99 isn’t on the to-do list of those who own the freshly released $ 2,800 camera — even if they are curious about the hardware’s guts. Luckily for such inquiring minds, Sony’s taken matters into its own hands and torn the DSLR apart. While it’s not your conventional play-by-play video teardown, Hirai and Co. came prepared with the camera already split into layers that showcase its major parts such as its magnesium alloy body, 35mm full-frame sensor and main circuit board. For the grand tour of the A99′s innards, hit the jump to catch the footage.

iPad Mini gets torn asunder by iFixit, finds very small screws

Interested in seeing all the adorable little parts inside Apple’s smallest iPad yet? iFixit’s already got its hands on one and has a currently-in-progress teardown going on, should that be your kinda thing. And what’s the verdict? Well, the teardown is still happening, but as of right now, there are some good signs. For one, the LCD and front glass are separate components, making replacement of individual components a possibility (and making a repair less expensive). And that LCD is once again of the Samsung variety, confirming Apple’s continued relationship with its legal adversary. As iFixit points out, Apple “often relies on multiple supplies for a single component,” so it’s possible that your teardown of another Mini will yield a different LCD manufacturer. More tidbits found inside thus far: confirmation of stereo speakers (a big change from the regular iPad’s mono setup). The teardown points out that the Mini’s Lightning charging port (significantly smaller than the previous 30-pin port) is likely what’s making space for that extra speaker. We’ll have more on repairability and unknown specs when iFixit’s all through.

Garmin GLO Portable GPS and GLONASS receiver hit the FCC, get torn down for good measure
Hasty, no? Merely hours after being announced to the world, Garmin’s GLO Portable GPS and GLONASS receiver have touched down in the FCC’s database. Per usual, that’s a fairly solid indicator that the devices will be available for sale on US shores within a few weeks, and if you’re curious, there’s even a draft user guide tucked in the source link below. Truth be told, there’s not a ton here that wasn’t already made public — it’s obviously “Made for iPod / iPhone / iPad,” and Garmin asserts that the included battery will take three hours to charge but 12 hours to deplete. The manual also asserts that Android users “may need to use an application to allow the sensor to properly communication over Bluetooth,” and just in case you’re thinking of getting wet and wild, the outer casing is said to be “rugged, but not water-resistant.” For shame — we were totally looking forward to geotagging our next romp down the Gauley.

Astronomers See Another Star Torn Apart By a Black Hole
The Bad Astronomer writes “A star in a galaxy 2.7 billion light years away wandered too close to a supermassive black hole and suffered the ultimate fate: it was literally torn apart by the black hole’s gravity. The event was seen as a flash of ultraviolet light flaring 350 times brighter than the galaxy itself, slowly fading over time. Astronomers were able to determine that some of the star’s material was eaten by the black hole, and some flung off into space. Although rare, this is the second time such a thing has been seen; the other was just last year.”

Apple TV (2012) gets torn down, confirmed to have 512MB of RAM, 8GB of storage

We already knew about most of the latest Apple TV‘s technical upgrades, but a few key specs have eluded us since its announcement. That’s now changed, however, thanks to user aicjofs over at XMBC’s forum, who ripped a fresh unit apart to find out exactly what’s inside of its shell. Apart from its documented single-core A5 SoC, it’s now confirmed that the 1080p-capable streamer features 512MB of Hynix-branded RAM (up from 256) along with an unchanged 8GB of storage, courtesy of Toshiba. Interestingly, there’s no word on whether it’s still packing Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR like the 2010 variant (Apple’s website only lists 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi), but MacRumors notes that aicjofs has discovered what’s possibly an additional WiFi antenna. A few parts are still under investigation, but you can check out the links below for more info.

Reddit, my world got torn apart today. Thinking about enlisting in the military. I need your help.
(Please note, that I am slightly drunk) If there really is any good left within reddit, I need some help. Please… My world got torn apart today. I just ended my engagement with my fiance of 4 years about three weeks ago. Today I found out that she is already seeing another man. Someone that I actually know, and would almost consider a friend. I had to be sent home from work tonight because I was so devastated I couldn’t keep myself together.
Anyway, I am 23 years old, and plan on joining the police academy in March of 2012. I dont want to end there, I really want to end up either being chief, detective, or possibly even FBI. I feel like joining the military would not only benefit me by paying for my school, considering I dont have the money for it, but could also make me overall a better person. I want to hear what people have to say that have joined the military. If they have any regrets, thoughts, or even input.
In case anyone was wondering, I really wouldnt be leaving much behind. I dont have many friends, and im not much of a “family man.” My one best friend (of maybe 9 years), who I dont get to see much anymore is really all I have left in this state and would be the only reason I would stay back.
I truely need some help guys. I kind of feel all alone right now, and that leaving this place would be my best option.
Edit- Just to clarify, I did not end the engagement. It was mostly her decision.
Edit 2 – Just want to say thanks to all the people that posted, and gave me their words of wisdom. 35 upvotes is honestly the most I have ever had, and the fact that even that many people saw interest in my topic, makes me feel much better. Going to go to bed for the night to kind of absorb everything said to me tonight. Hopefully I will wake up in the morning, a refreshed man, who has a general idea of where he wants to take his life. Thanks again reddit, I honestly can count on you more then I can my friends. You are more a family then I could ever hope to have.
