Report: Amazon planning front-lit Kindle e-reader for July, new tablet later this year

Certainly it’s no great shocker that Amazon’s got plans for a new e-reader and tablet later this year. Nor should anyone be particularly surprised at the prospect of a front-lit reader from the retail giant set to compete directly with the latest Nook offering. Reuters, however, claims to have some insight into both, courtesy of an anonymous source. Apparently the aforementioned reader is set for a July launch, arriving in the customary Wifi and 3G varieties. The tablet, meanwhile, is set for a release “closer to the holiday season,” according to the source. Amazon, E Ink and the like naturally refused to comment on the matter.

NVIDIA confirms no ‘Project Grey’ until 2013, Tegra 3 LTE later this year

NVIDIA confirms no 'Project Grey' until 2013, Tegra 3 LTE later this yearWhile earnings calls are rarely the veritable dial-in party, sometimes they do toss up a juicy gambit or disappointing revelation. While NVIDIA was dishing out projections for Q1 2013, it pretty much quashed any hopes of seeing an in-house LTE Tegra chip in 2012. While we were assured that Tegra 3 LTE phones would come this year — based on those partnerships announced back in February — it was also stated that the thoroughbred Tegra LTE chip wouldn’t be a reality until 2013. So, this pretty much ties in with what we had heard, but this time, from the horse’s mouth.

Could a Computer Write This Story?

An anonymous reader tips an article at CNN about the development of technology that automates the process of writing news articles. It started with simple sports reporting, but now at least one company is setting its sights on more complicated articles. Quoting:
“Narrative Science then began branching out into finance and other topics that are driven heavily by data. Soon, Hammond says, large companies came looking for help sorting huge amounts of data themselves. ‘I think the place where this technology is absolutely essential is the area that’s loosely referred to as big data,’ Hammond said. ‘So almost every company in the world has decided at one point that in order to do a really good job, they need to meter and monitor everything.’ … Meanwhile, Hammond says Narrative Science is looking to eventually expand into long form news stories. That’s an idea that’s unsettling to some journalism experts.”

Facebook Granted About $796 Million In Restricted Stock To Employees This Month

money1More Facebook riches all around! The company granted about $ 796 million in restricted stock units to employees less than a week ago, according to an amended IPO filing.

These are ”employee refresher grants,” or new grants for employees. They don’t replace existing ones. These restricted stock units, or RSUs, could be worth anywhere from $ 707 million to $ 884 million based on Facebook’s expected $ 28 to 35 price range per share. Of course, if people hold on for longer and the stock pops by the time their lock-up period finishes, these shares could be worth a great deal more.

Dish Network, AMC dispute could see the network’s channels dropped this summer

It wasn’t that long ago that Dish Network was proudly offering AMC HD to its customers (especially since DirecTV didn’t, which has since been rectified) but now the company is willing to let the network’s contract expire this summer, taking new episodes of Mad Men, Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead away from subscribers. The source of the sudden animosity, according to a press release from AMC, is continuing litigation between it and Dish Network over dropping the Voom HD channels back in 2008, leading to them going dark soon after. The LA Times reports Dish Network claims the denial of its appeal on a decision in the case has nothing to do with its sudden change of heart is solely about AMC’s high renewal cost for a relatively low viewership. Whatever you believe, the sniping and threats will likely continue right up until the contract runs out June 30th, which is at least long enough for this season of Mad Men to finish on its own.

Nokia 808 PureView available this month in Russia and India

Are you eagerly awaiting to get your hands on Espoo’s 41 megapixel Symbian Belle flagship? We bet you are, and perhaps today is your lucky day — if you live in Russia or India, that is. Nokia’s just officially announced that the 808 PureView will be available this month “in select markets”. Strangely, the company didn’t give a specific date or list any countries beyond the aforementioned two. The handset, which was revealed at Mobile Word Congress in February, is expected to retail for 450 Euros and “revolutionize the imaging experience” with its large sensor, Zeiss optics and pixel oversampling technology. PR after the break.

How Twitter Helped This Small-Town Newspaper Win A Pulitzer Prize [TCTV]

tuscaloosatweetsIt’s not often that you look at a Twitter stream and think, “This is really Pulitzer material.” But if you happen to be looking at the Twitter accounts of the Tuscaloosa News and its reporting staff, that would actually be the case.

This week, Western Alabama’s Tuscaloosa News was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news reporting based on its coverage of the massive tornado outbreak that hit the region in late April 2011. The paper extensively covered the storm and its aftermath in its print and online versions, but that wasn’t all — its staff also used Twitter to report the latest on-the-ground details about the tornado, its damages, and rescue and cleanup efforts. And for the first time, the Pulitzer committee this year took tweets and other social media updates when awarding the breaking news prize.

Timing is everything when it comes to reporting, and in this case that was especially true. Just a few weeks before the storm hit, two young Tuscaloosa News staffers — web editor Brian Reynolds and reporter Wayne Grayson — had held a social media training class to encourage their colleagues to use things like Twitter. Not all of their colleagues were on board at the time, but once the tornado touched down the value of real-time social media became apparent to even the most skeptical Tuscaloosa News reporters — and fortunately, because of their recent training session they knew how to use it. So TechCrunch TV was happy to have the chance to talk to Reynolds and Grayson via Skype this week to learn more about their experience.

Adidas debuting miCoach tracking technology in this year’s MLS All-Star Game (video)

Adidas debuting miCoach tracking technology in this year's MLS All-Star Game
While it’s been a few months since Adidas launched those intelligent F50 miCoach cleats, it finally looks as if the German outfit’s ready to test the tech on the football pitch. Adidas announced earlier today that its adizeros will be a part of the “world’s first smart soccer match,” during the MLS All-Star Game on July 25th in Philadelphia. With the help of the miCoach’s tracking system, coaches are able to measure a player’s speed and acceleration, how much ground was covered, the intensity of play, as well as spotting weaknesses and strengths. Naturally, the end results can then be analyzed on a computer or directly from an application on one of Apple’s slates. Adidas says this is only the beginning, as it plans to bring the technology — detailed in video form just after the break — to other leagues around the world in the near future.

Illuminated Kindle e-readers could arrive this year, also might not

Rumors relating to a new Kindle, or three, land in our inbox with surprising frequency, but when they come from our brethren at TechCrunch, we’ll definitely give it a listen. Devin Coldewey reports how he was lucky enough to snatch a glance at an in-development Kindle, which sports an illuminated screen. Amazon’s purchase of Finnish firm Oy Modilis, which has a quiver of patents pertaining to lighting technology, adds credence to the idea that an e-reader with some form of lighting could be in the works, and Coldewey thinks he’s seen it. He says tapping the screen reveals a slider that, when dragged to the right, “lit up evenly with a rather cool light.” Importantly — for eyes and batteries alike — the light is said to be softer, and of a gentler blue-white color, compared to the harsh white common in LCDs. The loose-lipped wielder of this device claims that the industrial design isn’t finished yet, but did hint at a 2012 release. We’re not holding our breath, but the chance to do away with additional light accessories, is definitely enough to have us keep our fingers crossed.

Samsung’s vacuum tube driven speaker lineup gets priced for US, available this Spring

Image

It’s no secret that Samsung’s been teasing a major interest in premium audio since CES, blending digitally powered speakers with vacuum tube pre-amplifiers. We didn’t get a chance to check the systems out in Vegas, but today the company’s spilling the details regarding US pricing on a trio of systems, all of which will be available in the Spring. The star of the show is the $ 800 DA-870 Audio Dock, featuring the rear-mounted dual dock for Galaxy (charging only) and iOS devices we first saw last month. Clad in a polished wood case (available in black or cherry), the 2.1 stereo system pumps out up to 100 watts of power through its glass fiber speakers and tweeters. As an added touch, its JJ Electronics 12AU7 tubes (the same you could use for guitar amps) are sunken in from its top under glass, allowing for clear view of their glow. Best of all, aside from the requisite USB and 3.5mm inputs, the DA-870 works wirelessly with Samsung’s AllShare Play, AirPlay and Bluetooth 3.0 w/ aptX.

Moving past the HiFi category, Samsung’s also priced a duo of surround sound systems aimed at the home theater market. To start, there’s the $ 1,000 HT-E6730W Blu-ray 3D 7.1 home theater system and its $ 800 5.1 sibling, the HT-E6500W Blu-ray 3D — both of which feature the same tube pre-amp and similar wireless capabilities as the DA-870. Notably, the E6730W features a tiltable top speaker on each of its stereo towers, allowing for a more personalized output depending on your room. Furthermore, if you happen to have a DA-870, too, you’ll be able to stream the audio via Bluetooth if you find yourself far away from your television. There’s no exact date on when you’ll be able snag any of them, but Samsung notes that the 5.1 system is currently shipping.

LG Spectrum Review: This Is One Ugly Sumbitch

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe LG Spectrum has spent a long while with me. In fact, LG’s asking for it back, saying that my review period has come to an end. I didn’t get around to the full review until now because (to be perfectly honest with you) I didn’t really want to sit down and talk about the LG Spectrum for X amount of hours.

True, there’s nothing necessarily “wrong” with the phone. It’s got solid specs, performs alright (I guess), and has a downright gorgeous display. But at the same time, there’s a long list of issues that I have with the phone, and most center around design.

Is this the Nokia Lumia 719c?

China is getting even closer to its first taste of Nokia Windows Phone and it might include a new phone entirely. While we’re still two weeks away from Mr. Elop’s proposed March 28th launch, the leaked shot above is purported to be the Lumia 719c — a previously unseen Windows Phone that could arrive in time for Nokia’s latest smartphone push. It has that familiar curved shape and plastic build, but there’s some slight design riffs to set it apart from both the Lumia 710 and 610 — one of which it’ll likely replace in Chinese stores. We only have Mr. Blurrycam’s one-shot portrait to go on so far, but expect to see some price-constrained specs like those seen on Nokia’s other entry-level smartphone when (or if) it gets an official reveal.

NPR Retracts Mike Daisey’s This American Life Piece On Foxconn For “Significant Fabrications”

2009605875At over a million digital listens, “Mr. Daisey Goes To The Apple Factory” is This American Life’s most popular episode in history. That’s no small feat for one of the world’s most well-known radio shows. When it aired, it set off yet another firestorm of controversy regarding the ethics of Apple (and other large tech companies) using cheap Chinese labor through major manufacturers like Foxconn. Mr Daisey, who has been touring for years with a monologue about his visit to the factories there and the moral implications thereof, provided details to This American Life to put together what was really a powerful and attention-grabbing piece.

Unfortunately, in the words of This American Life host and producer Ira Glass, “We’ve learned that Mike Daisey’s story about Apple in China – which we broadcast in January – contained significant fabrications. We’re retracting the story because we can’t vouch for its truth.”

This week’s This American Life will take a full hour to detail the errors and fabrications in Daisey’s report.

The big sticking point that comes with the NFC-based payment systems that companies like Google and Visa love with is they require buy-in from the people and companies you actually want to buy from.
