Apple online store lets Chinese buy on a 2-year plan, puts iPads within reach

iPad mini at Beijing's Wangfujing store

Apple has repeatedly stressed that China is important to its bottom line, but it faces a dilemma given the premium associated with its name: when it can take weeks’ worth of typical pay to buy an iOS device, let alone a Mac, many locals either have to save up or else turn to alternatives. The company may not have truly low-cost devices — at least, not yet — but it is offering an olive branch in the form of installment plans. Chinese who order from the online Apple Store with a China Merchants Bank credit card can now buy virtually anything priced between ¥300 and ¥30,000 ($ 48 to $ 4,821) using up to 24 payments spread over two years. Much like in other countries, there’s higher additional fees the longer the installments carry on. The strategy only helps a certain segment of the population for whom the up-front cost is the lone obstacle; that may be enough in the near future, though, given that there’s still significant demand.

Apple Loses Claim For False Advertising Regarding Amazon “App Store”

An anonymous reader writes a court has dismissed Apple’s allegations that Amazon’s use of the “app store” phrase constituted false advertising. “Apple’s efforts to protect its intellectual property sometimes result in lawsuits that leave even the most ardent of Apple fans scratching their heads. One such suit was Apple’s March 2011 lawsuit against Amazon over the retailer’s use of the phrase ‘app store’ as used in its Amazon Appstore for Android. “

Google adds localized screen shots and video to Play store

Devs have been able to localize their apps and the text that accompanies them in the Google Play store for sometime. But until recently they’ve had to recycle the same images and video content regardless of country. That’s finally changed, and developers can customize everything from the lead graphic to the icon and even swap in different YouTube clips when localizing listings for one of Google’s 49 supported languages. That means graphics can be customized for local holidays and video demos won’t need to rely on YouTube’s subtitles for translation. For more check out the source link.

It’s A Facebook And Google World On Apple’s App Store, Poke Hits #1 A Day After Its Release

3736095515_504612aab7_zRemember all of this excitement hoopla over Facebook’s latest standalone app, Poke, just yesterday? You aren’t the only one that is interested, apparently. As The Next Web reports, Poke by Facebook has hit the #1 free app spot on Apple’s App Store, just a day after being released. Make no mistake about it, the big companies like Facebook and Google are going to have the best holiday season ever thanks to Apple and iOS. It’s very rare to see utility or social apps hold the top free app spot like Google Maps has over the past week, and like Facebook Poke probably will. It’s usually a game, or a boogers app that holds that down. What does this mean for consumers…and for Apple? Most iOS users who are getting new devices, or even first-timers, are swayed by what’s hot on the App Store. The leaderboard is very important to onboard new users into the app ecosystem. Apple likes to highlight the best and brightest that shows off their technology, but the leaderboard shows what users are really interested in. Today, it’s all about Poke. When Facebook said it was focusing on mobile, it wasn’t kidding. Holding the #1 free app spot is like having the biggest kiosk in a mall during the biggest rush of the year. This type of crowding from big companies isn’t what the App Store has seen over the years, as we usually have a big game launch right around Christmas, thus ruling the charts since Apple freezes new submissions and releases during the holidays. Note that SnapChat is holding the #9 spot, and is clearly slipping in popularity, and Google is sitting pretty at both #2 (Maps) and #5 (YouTube). Even Pinger’s free texting and calling app is right up there at #6. It’s also important to note that the new “hot” apps tend to surge up to the top quickly, as Poke clearly has, but remaining there for more than a few days is a real feat. Can Facebook do it? Let’s see as all of those new iPads, iPhones, Touches and iPad minis get opened next week. Welcome, Facebook. Seriously. [Photo credit: Flickr]

Google Play Store update on Android brings post-install suggestions, translations

Google Play Store update on Android brings postinstall suggestions, translations

Google likes to stealthily roll out Google Play Store updates for Android users on a frequent basis, whether it’s to add new sections or to encourage a little more impulse shopping. We’d put a brand new revision in that last camp. The 3.10.9 tweak no longer just leaves us lingering at an app’s page during an installation: start the process and the store offers suggestions based on fellow adopters’ habits as well as a shortcut back to the main portal. Language mismatches in the store could also be a thing of the past with an option to translate descriptions into the device owner’s native tongue. Along with a quicker way to add Google+ friends and get better app recommendations, Google’s refresh is clearly built to remove those last points of hesitation before trying something new; if the app drawer is looking a little bare, hit the source link (or wait for an automatic update) to fill up.

Bloomberg’s App Portal brings its financial market terminals into the app store age

Bloomberg's App Portal brings its financial market terminals into the app store age

Monitoring financial data and trading stocks in the big leagues often means using a locked down Bloomberg terminal pre-loaded with sanctioned software, but now the platform has caught the app store bug. Starting today, stock market buffs will be able to purchase apps on the Bloomberg App Portal, which underwent more than a year of testing and has software from over 40 developers. As for revenue, Bloomberg’s taken a page from Apple’s book and will keep 30 percent of earnings made from sales on its storefront. Since a single console sets customers back $ 20,000 each year according to the Financial Times, we imagine $ 0.99 apps will be few and far between. It’s unlikely that Rovio is going to barge into this app marketplace, so day traders will probably be busy playing stocks instead of Angry Birds.

Apple stealithly gives App Store categories their own highlights, lets niche apps have their 15 minutes of fame

It’s tough to find truly stellar mobile apps, no matter what platform you’re running, and that’s even truer when delving into categories. Apple has made a gesture towards giving more titles their moment in the sun through a low-key update to the App Store in iTunes and on iOS 6 devices. Jump to at least some categories, such as games or education, and you’ll get the same carousels, banners and other promotions that would normally be reserved for the main portal. The shift is a simple one, but it theoretically helps App Store shoppers go beyond the surface — and developers to reap the rewards.
