Fuel Cells Could Offer Cheap Carbon-Dioxide Storage

A new type of fuel cell could make CO2 storage cheaper, but it could also prove to be a good way to pump more oil out of the ground.

The electrochemical reactions that occur inside fuel cells to generate electricity could provide a cheap way to selectively remove carbon dioxide from the exhaust gases of fossil-fuel power plants. The same reactions could concentrate the carbon dioxide, allowing it to be stored underground. The fuel cell could also be used to generate electricity, providing revenue to offset its cost.

AngelPad’s Sixth Batch Of Startups Includes Companies Working On Drones, Storage, And More

angelpadAngelPad, the San Francisco-based accelerator founded by former Googlers, held its sixth demo day yesterday. I wasn’t there (I know, it’s super-embarrassing), but I did get to meet with founding partners Thomas Korte and Carine Magescas today to talk about the newest batch of companies.

Magescas said that in the three years since AngelPad was founded, “the premise of what we had in the beginning has been validated.” That premise breaks down to three main ideas, she said. First, she and Korte “push [the startups] really hard.” That’s particularly important in the company’s early stages, Korte said, because it can be hard for the founders to get honest feedback from their family and friends, and because making a relatively small change can have a big effect on a startup’s ultimate trajectory.

Google unveils 'Save to Drive' button for websites, streamlines content delivery to cloud storage

Google Drive may be playing catch-up to its competitors in some ways, but the cloud storage team in Mountain View is forging ahead in others. Today, Big G announced a ‘Save to Drive’ button that allow users to save content directly from websites to Google-fied cloud lockers. Adding the button’s easy, as it only requires a few lines of HTML, and a JavaScript API allows web admins to control their behavior. Folks looking to take advantage of the new button can learn more about it on the Google Developers portal, and as for the rest of us, we’ll just enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Amazon Cloud Drive tacks on file syncing, flexes its digital storage muscle

DNP Amazon steps its game up, adds file sync to Cloud Drive

After nearly a year on the market, Amazon has finally blessed its Cloud Drive apps for Windows and Mac with a file syncing folder. Starting today, users can access their documents, music and photos across multiple computers — a feature that we’ve seen from the likes of Google Drive, Dropbox and SkyDrive for quite some time. While this feature is far from groundbreaking, it does manage to make Amazon’s service a respectable alternative to cloud storage’s reigning heavy hitters. Toss in its 5GB of free storage and Cloud Drive could become a worthy contender for those who are looking for a new or additional place to house their digital collections.

WordPress.com Launches Business Accounts With Custom Domains, Unlimited Storage & Support For $299 Per Site Per Year

wordpress-logo-stacked-rgbAutomattic’s WordPress.com just launched WordPress.com for Business. The business accounts, which will cost $ 299 per site, per year, and will come with advanced design tools with support for custom web fonts, 50 premium themes and unlimited storage for videos and audio, as well as live chat support. Business users will also get a free domain name for their sites. Some of the features in this package are also available in WordPress.com’s $ 99 per year Pro Bundle, but the live support option, premium themes and unlimited storage are only available through the Business accounts (or as a part of the company’s higher-priced Enterprise and VIP versions). The sites, of course, will also be free of ads. Support for business customers will be available during U.S. business hours (EST) and users who need a bit more hand-holding while customizing their sites will be able to call upon a “Happiness Engineer” who will, presumably, be there to engineer some happiness for them. WordPress.com is clearly targeting small and medium businesses with this service, but the announcement also noted that it could be an option for “a pro blogger who wants to try out a bunch of premium themes before committing” or a ” non-profit building its first website.” Premium themes on WordPress.com start at $ 50 per theme and the largest storage upgrade (200GB) costs $ 290 per year, so businesses that need these features are now better off subscribing to this new service.

Intel launches Atom CE5300-based storage platform with multiple streams, smart scaling

Intel launches Atom CE5300based storage platform with multiple streams, smart scaling

There’s been more than a few Atom-based storage servers. Most of them either have to lean on the same Atom processors you’d usually get with nettops, though, which makes them less than ideal for media tasks than a chip dedicated to the job. Intel has just launched a new platform that might be a better fit for home network storage. New NAS arrays from Asustor, Synology, Thecus and others (none yet pictured here) all revolve around a dual-core Atom CE5300 system-on-chip that’s better-optimized for media processing duties: it can stream video across the network to multiple devices at once, and can automatically downscale video to accommodate smaller screens. The small chip contributes to a relatively small price at the same time, with NAS boxes starting around $ 299. Not everyone can suddenly justify a dedicated media server in the home just because the CE5300 is an option, but those that do may at least get more for their money.

HTML5 Storage Bug Can Fill Your Hard Drive

Dystopian Rebel writes “A Stanford comp-sci student has found a serious bug in Chromium, Safari, Opera, and MSIE. Feross Aboukhadijeh has demonstrated that these browsers allow unbounded local storage. ‘The HTML5 Web Storage standard was developed to allow sites to store larger amounts of data (like 5-10 MB) than was previously allowed by cookies (like 4KB). … The current limits are: 2.5 MB per origin in Google Chrome, 5 MB per origin in Mozilla Firefox and Opera, 10 MB per origin in Internet Explorer. However, what if we get clever and make lots of subdomains like 1.filldisk.com, 2.filldisk.com, 3.filldisk.com, and so on? Should each subdomain get 5MB of space? The standard says no. … However, Chrome, Safari, and IE currently do not implement any such “affiliated site” storage limit.’ Aboukhadijeh has logged the bug with Chromium and Apple, but couldn’t do so for MSIE because ‘the page is broken” (see http://connect.microsoft.com/IE). Oops. Firefox’s implementation of HTML5 local storage is not vulnerable to this exploit.”

Ultrasound Waves Used To Increase Data Storage Capacity of Magnetic Media

Lucas123 writes “Electrical engineers at Oregon State University (OSU) said yesterday that they have found a technique to use high-frequency sound waves to improve magnetic data storage. The data write-technology breakthrough could allow greater amounts of data to be stored on both hard disk drives and NAND flash-based solid-state drives (SSDs), they said. Typically, when magnetic recording material is temporarily heated, even for an instant, it can become momentarily less stiff and more data can be stored at a particular spot. But, the technique has proven difficult to effectively increase capacity because heating tends to spread beyond where it is wanted and the technology involves complex integration of optics, electronics and magnetics, the researchers said. With the new technique, known as acoustic-assisted magnetic recording, ultrasound is directed at a highly specific location on the material while data is being stored, creating elasticity that allows “a tiny portion of the material to bend or stretch.” After the ultrasound is turned off, the material immediately returns to its original shape, but the data stored during the process remains in a dense form.”

Kim Dotcom's Mega cloud storage launches for early adopters, teases 4TB for big spenders

Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom has been promising what’s almost a sort of renaissance through his Mega cloud storage service. Now that it’s open to the first wave of users, we have an inkling of what that strategy shift entails. Mega is currently just a simple-to-use parking place for data with a relatively large 50GB of storage in a free tier. However, it may grow quickly: there’s promises of Google Docs-style editing, instant messaging and mobile access, among other plans. Eventual paid plans will offer considerably more storage of between 500GB for €10 per month ($ 13) to 4TB for €30 ($ 40), albeit with a bandwidth cap of twice the storage at any given level. As such, Mega is mostly a bundle of potential — but it may stand out from the pack if ambition matches reality.

Ask Slashdot: Linux Mountable Storage Pool For All the Cloud Systems?

An anonymous reader writes “Many cloud systems are available on the market like: dropbox, google, sugar sync, or your local internet provider, that offer some free gigabytes of storage. Is there anything out there which can combine the storage into one usable folder (preferably linux mountable) and encrypt the data stored in the cloud? The basic idea would be to create one file per cloud used as a block device. Then combine all of them using a software raid (redundancy etc) with cryptFS on top. Have you heard of anything which can do that or what can be used to build upon?”

Xbox Live outage temporarily disconnecting cloud storage for some users

Xbox Live outage temporarily disconnecting cloud storage for some users

Microsoft added a cloud storage feature to the Xbox 360 in its fall 2011 dashboard update, but today an outage has taken it offline for the last several hours and counting. As noted by Joystiq, trying to access your cloud saves is resulting in a 0x807b0198 error for many, although other parts of XBL like streaming video services and multiplayer gaming profiles are unaffected. For the moment, we were able to copy/move some of our saves from the cloud cache on our hard drive (Settings –> storage –> cloud storage) to the normal hard drive section, and access them from there. Your mileage may vary, but otherwise you’ll just need to keep an eye out the XBL dashboard status page to see when things are back to normal. There’s no word yet on when it will be fully restored, but a message there says engineers are working on a fix. We’re not missing the old “gamertag recovery” feature the cloud system replaced and upgraded, but any significant outage is certainly enough to make us think about keeping our saves backed up on a memory card in a safe place — just in case.

Sony and Box extend BFF status, offer 50GB free storage to Xperia owners through 2013

When Sony and Box came together last year to offer Xperia owners a tantalizing deal of 50GB of free storage for life, the promotion was only set to run for a year. Just as with the prior promo, Xperia and Sony tablet users can snag 50 gigs of cloud storage completely gratis just by signing up or tapping into existing Box accounts on their devices before December 31st 2013. However, do note that the offer doesn’t extend to the Xperia X10 mini, the X10 mini pro and anything that has firmware older than Android 2.1. Now that Sony has this going for two years straight, maybe they should extend this to a lifetime scenario, or as long as Box sticks around to offer up that sweet storage in the sky.
