Review: Star Trek: Into Darkness

J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot of Star Trek was wildly successful. It raked in hundreds of millions at the box office, and revitalized the Star Trek franchise, which had languished for 7 years without a new film and 4 years without a TV presence (after 18 consecutive years of new shows). It also did something no Trek movie had done before; it made Star Trek ‘cool’ in the public consciousness. Combined, those factors ensured Abrams would get another turn at the helm of a Trek movie, and sooner rather than later. With today’s release of Star Trek: Into Darkness, that trend is very likely to continue. It’s a movie with all the same strengths and weaknesses of its predecessor, and if it worked before, it’ll work again. Read on for our review.

‘Green’ Galaxy Recycles Gas, Supercharges Star Birth

astroengine writes “In a galaxy, far, far away (6 billion light-years away to be precise), the most efficient star ‘factory’ has been discovered. Called SDSSJ1506+54, this galaxy generates a huge quantity of infrared radiation, the majority being generated by a compact region at its core. NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer first spotted the galactic oddity and Hubble confirmed the maelstrom of stellar birthing near its core. But the most amazing thing? This galaxy is the ‘greenest’ factory yet discovered — it uses 100 percent of all the available hydrogen to supply the protostars, leaving no waste. ‘This galaxy is remarkably efficient,’ said lead scientist Jim Geach of McGill University in a NASA news release. ‘It’s converting its gas supply into new stars at the maximum rate thought possible.’”

A Tale of Two Tests: Why Energy Star LED Light Bulbs Are a Rare Breed

cylonlover writes “Just over a week ago Gizmag reported that Philips’ 22 W LED light bulb, designed as a like-for-like replacement of a 100-W incandescent light bulb, was the first LED bulb of its type to receive the stamp of approval from Energy Star. But looking at the Energy Star requirements reported by Philips in its press release, it seemed a little strange that Philips’ product is the only one to have been certified – given that products long on the market appear, at face value, to meet those requirements. Since then, Gizmag has spoken to LED light bulb makers Switch Lighting and other industry players to find out why they’re apparently playing catch-up.”

Disney shuts down game development at LucasArts, moves to licensed Star Wars games

If you’re old enough to have played PC games for more than a decade, LucasArts (originally LucasFilm Games) likely has a permanent place in your heart after a string of legendary adventure and flight combat releases. You’ll unfortunately have to put the company as you knew it squarely in the past — Lucasfilm’s new owner, Disney, is ending internal development at LucasArts. The software house is shifting to a licensing model for Star Wars games, reportedly “minimizing the company’s risk” while expanding the range of games on offer. There’s a chance that in-progress titles like Star Wars 1313 will survive with outside help, according to a spokesperson in touch with GameInformer, but talk of layoffs from Kotaku dampens any chances for direct follow-ups to favorites like Grim Fandango. We won’t mourn too much when personas like Ron Gilbert, Lawrence Holland and Tim Schafer have long since moved on to other companies — still, it’s unquestionably the end of an era for game and movie fans alike.

NASA Trailer To Be Shown Before Star Trek: Into Darkness

Tired of seeing ads for cars and soda before the films you watch at the theater? Well, a successful crowdfunding campaign at Indiegogo will see a trimmed down version of NASA’s ‘We Are Explorers’ video aired before showings of the upcoming Star Trek: Into Darkness in theaters all over the country. “Most people recognize space as a key expression of our character. They know our space programs as a globally recognized brand of ingenuity. The recently landed Mars Curiosity Rover was the latest reminder that space systems are the crown jewels of our scientific and technical prowess. Less known is the indispensable value space systems bring to our everyday lives. Space provides irreplaceable capabilities for defense, public health, finance, medicine, energy, agriculture, transportation, development and countless other fields. Investments in space programs are precisely about improving and protecting life on Earth. … By funding this campaign, we can remind students and the general public that our nation’s space agency is working hard on the next era of exploration.” The campaign’s funding goal was reached in just six days — their stretch goal will increase the number of theaters for the clip from 59 screens to 750. The movie comes out on May 17th.

AIA crowdfunds a space program ad that would run in front of Star Trek (video)

Aerospace industry wants a NASA ad in front of Star Trek, prefers real space travel video

As a federal agency, NASA can’t run commercials — a problem both for rallying broader public support and fostering the next generation of astronauts. The Aerospace Industries Association has both cultural and very practical reasons for improving that public awareness, so it’s taking the unusual step of crowdfunding an ad purchase to get the American space program in front of as many eyes as possible. The project would cut a 30-second version of NASA’s We Are the Explorers promo (after the break), minus the administration’s official endorsement, and run it in at least 50 major movie theaters for eight weeks following the launch of Star Trek Into Darkness on May 17th. The crowdfunding is ostensibly to demonstrate our collective love of space, and would directly translate any money raised beyond the $ 33,000 goal into ads for more theaters. A cynical industry move? Maybe — but we won’t build starships without a public that’s interested in seeing them beyond movie screens, which makes the ad a noble enough cause in our minds.

IRS Spent $60,000 Producing Star Trek Parody

An anonymous reader writes According to the AP, the IRS is being “scolded for spending $ 60,000 dollars on an elaborate parody video that played at a 2010 conference. ‘The video features an elaborate set depicting the control room, or bridge, of the spaceship featured in the hit TV show. IRS workers portray the characters, including one who plays Mr. Spock, complete with fake hair and pointed ears. The production value is high even though the acting is what one might expect from a bunch of tax collectors. In the video, the spaceship is approaching the planet ‘Notax,’ where alien identity theft appears to be a problem.’ You can find the hilarious and/or nausea-inducing video on YouTube.”

Nearby Star Could Host a Baby Solar System

astroengine writes “With the help of Europe’s Herschel Space Observatory and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile, a team of astronomers have made a lucky discovery about TW Hydrae, the nearest star to the solar system that plays host to a protoplanetary disk. Not only have they gained a more precise estimate of the mass of the material inside the protoplanetary disk, they’ve also found that it may produce a system of worlds similar to that of the solar system. TW Hydrae may look like the solar system did over 4 billion years ago (abstract). Interestingly, TW Hydrae is also a star that would normally be considered too mature to host a protoplanetary disk. “If there’s no chance your project can fail, you’re probably not doing very interesting science. TW Hydrae is a good example of how a calculated scientific gamble can pay off,” said Thomas Henning, of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg.”
