University of Glasgow creates 3D with singlepixel sensors, skips the cameras video

Most approaches to capturing 3D models of real-world objects involve multiple cameras that are rarely cheap, and are sometimes tricky to calibrate. The University of Glasgow has developed a method that ditches those cameras altogether. Its system has four single-pixel sensors stitching together a 3D image based on the reflected intensity of light patterns cast by a projector. Reducing the pixel count lowers the cost per sensor to just a few dollars, and extends the sensitivity as far as terahertz wavelengths. Real-world products are still a long way off, but the university sees its invention as useful for cancer detection and other noble pursuits. Us? We’d probably just waste it on creating uncanny facsimiles of ourselves.

QNAP adds NAS lines with XBMC support, skips the home theater middleman

QNAP intros Turbo NAS lines with XBMC builtin, skips the home theater middleman

High-rolling (or just highly nerdy) home theater PC setups often have network-attached storage to hold the reams of video that invariably won’t fit on the PC itself. QNAP wonders why we don’t just cut to the chase — both of its TS-x69L and TS-x69 Pro entries in the Turbo NAS range support XBMC’s home theater software out of the gate, letting either NAS serve as the front-end as long as they’re hooked up through HDMI. They won’t be the most powerful when they’re powered by dual-core, 2.13GHz Atom chips; that might be forgiven when there’s space for as many as eight hard drives shareable across the entire home. The lineups start at $ 479 for empty two-bay editions and scale up to $ 1,099 for eight. Not cheap, we know, but they may be relative bargains for any movie-watchers looking to simplify the living room.

AOC’s 23-inch IPS monitor almost skips the bezel, ships soon for $199

AOC's 23inch IPS monitor almost skips the bezel, ships soon for $ 199

Close on the heels of its “virtually borderless” (when it’s turned off) 27-inch IPS monitor, display maker AOC has come up with a smaller sibling to add to the family. The 23-incher, tagged the i2367fh, totes similar styling and specs — IPS technology, a claimed 2mm bezel, 1920 x 1080 resolution with 50,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 5ms response time and two HDMI ports. The off timer function its predecessor sported also remains. However the new model, which is part of a different series, can’t boast of the same height-adjustable stand and 4-watt speakers, integrating a 2-watt pair instead. The monitor carries a $ 199 sticker, but you can snag it for 10 bucks lower on backorder from B&H Photo and Amazon — stock is expected later this month.

Spotify Radio feature turns into an app, offers Pandora-like stations with unlimited skips

While Spotify has had little trouble cranking up its subscriber base so far, one feature that has notably been lacking is its radio / auto playlist feature. Today, that’s been upgraded, as the freshest preview builds move the Radio section down among the new Spotify Apps, where it now lets you drop in any song from your library for it to automatically create a radio station of similar music around. Subscribers not interested in upgrading yet can find similar functionality tied to Spotify’s library with the EchoFi tool, but this venture represents the service’s debut of an “all-new intelligent recommendation engine” meant to dig the tracks you want out of its millions-deep library. Advertising “unlimited skips” is a clear jab at Pandora, but it’s not immediately clear if you’ll still need a premium paid-up account for truly unlimited listening (well, maybe not). Hit the source link to grab a Radio-enabled preview build and see if some algorithm can defeat even the mightiest Yacht Rock playlist crafted by our own Brian Heater.
