Bloomberg: Verizon seeking to end Vodafone partnership through merger or buyout

Bloomberg Verizon seeking to resolve Vodafone partnership

Whether the two simply call the whole thing off or become a single unified company, Vodafone and Verizon could be “resolving” their relationship very soon according to Bloomberg. The oft-cited “people familiar with the situation” say that Verizon is considering ending its joint venture with Vodafone by purchasing back the 45 percent stake the European carrier currently holds in its American cousin. Another possible, though less likely, outcome is that Vodafone and Verizon could merge to form a single entity. Though, sources claim that previous talks towards that goal have hit roadblocks over leadership and headquarters location. The move would give Verizon slightly more power and freedom in the wireless market while allowing Vodafone to shed some its overseas weight. Vodafone CEO Vittorio Colao has made it obvious that he’s eager to sell off its non-controlling stakes in other operators. At the moment it doesn’t appear that formal negotiations have begun, but the two companies have apparently had high-level talks about their various options over the last few months. Obviously we’ll be keeping an eye out for more information and you can hit up the source link for a few more details.

Army seeking proposals for casualty-carrying UAVs

Army seeking proposals for casualty-carrying UAVs

Combat is a grizzly business, and despite the best efforts of medical evacuation crews, it’s not always feasible to send rescue teams into the fray. The US Army is seeking to address this with “autonomous vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) unmanned aircraft systems (UAS)” (read: drones) for dropping off medical supplies and picking up injured troops. In its latest request for research and development proposals, the Army calls not for new tools, but for the repurposing of current aircraft to do the job. Preferred candidates in the already unmanned class include the A160 Hummingbird and the K-MAX, while one of the suggestions for remote-control modification is the infamous Black Hawk. Makes the AR.Drone seem a little wimpy, doesn’t it?

Band Pro seeking damages against ARRI and Michael Bravin, expects to get its data back

Band Pro seeking damages against ARRI and Michael Bravin, expects to get its data back

Should you ever get the itch to illegally peek at a former employer’s servers, take a lesson from Michael Bravin: don’t. The former ARRI executive’s adventures in cooperate espionage have landed him nothing but trouble. Although Bravin’s previous plea agreement required him to pay back Band Pro for damages and legal fees, the outfit is now seeking punitive damages against both ARRI and Bravin himself. “Band Pro is informed and believes, and thereupon alleges that Glenn Kennel and Bill Russel, executives of ARRI, had firsthand knowledge of Bravin’s hacking activities,” asserts the recently filed complaint. In addition to damages, Band Pro is seeking orders requiring ARRI to return all information acquired from the said hacking and the destruction of “all business plans and strategies developed in reliance” of that information. Check out the PDF yourself for Band Pro’s full list of demands and a detailed outline of its thirteen accusations against ARRI — we’ll let you know how things go down if the trial pans out.

Rogers Joins Telus In Seeking National Regulation

silentbrad writes “Canada’s largest mobile service provider is urging the federal telecom regulator to implement a mandatory national consumer protection code (PDF; actual filing with the CRTC) in order to diffuse the threat posed by a growing hotchpotch of provincial regulations for wireless services. Rogers Communications Inc. submitted that proposal to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission in an application late Thursday. In doing so, Rogers becomes the second major carrier to ask the CRTC to resume active regulation of the terms and conditions for wireless service contracts, a practice that it largely abandoned during the 1990s. Nonetheless, those regulatory powers, while latent, remain in the Telecommunications Act, meaning the CRTC can still exercise its authority over those matters.”

Job Seeking Hacker Gets 30 Months In Prison

wiredmikey writes “A hacker who tried to land an IT job at Marriott by hacking into the company’s computer systems, and then unwisely extorting the company into hiring him, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison. The hacker started his malicious quest to land a job at Marriott by sending an email to Marriott containing documents taken after hacking into Marriott servers to prove his claim. He then threatened to reveal confidential information he obtained if Marriott did not give him a job in the company’s IT department. He was granted a job interview, but little did he know, Marriott worked with the U.S. Secret Service to create a fictitious Marriott employee for use by the Secret Service in an undercover operation to communicate with the hacker. He then was flown in for a face-to-face ‘interview’ where he admitted more and shared details of how he hacked in. He was then arrested and he pleaded guilty back in November 2011. Marriott claims the incident cost the company between $ 400,000 and $ 1 million in salaries, consultant expenses and other costs.”
