Google held a session today at I/O 2013 about how to make money on Android, and in the initial few minutes it shared some updated stats around Google Play revenues and how those are progressing. Not surprisingly, the big growth is coming with in-app purchases, though Google’s recently launched subscription model is also making headway.

T-Mobile USA Q1 2013 revenue drops 5 percent for second consecutive quarter to $4.7 billion
T-Mobile USA has been making a big push for pre-paid customers since it launched its Uncarrier plans in March, and it seems to be working — unfortunately, at the expense of more lucrative post-paid clients. While pre-paid revenue bumped to $ 503 million over $ 474 million last quarter, post-paid revenue fell to $ 3.2 billion, a drop of 4.7 percent, and overall revenue dropped by about the same amount to $ 4.7 billion from $ 4.9 billion in Q4 2012. Overall, however, the company did pick up 579,000 customers in total, and claimed its lowest client turnover rate, 1.9 percent, since way back in 2008. Another bright spot has been the addition of the iPhone, as the company has already pushed around 500,000 of the 4, 4S and 5 models out the door since it launched at the Uncarrier event — perhaps due to the very attractive pricing.

Canada Revenue Agency To Tax BitCoin Transactions
First time accepted submitter semilemon writes “The Canada Revenue Agency has started paying attention to BitCoin transactions, as it says users will have to pay tax on all transactions using the currency. From the article, “The CRA told the CBC there are two separate tax rules that apply to the electronic currency, depending on whether they are used as money to buy things or if they were merely bought and sold for speculative purposes. “Barter transaction rules apply where BitCoins are used to purchase goods or services,” Canada Revenue Agency spokesman Philippe Brideau said in an email. In this situation, that means whatever you’ve received in exchange for your $ 1 worth of vegetables must be documented as a taxable gain of at least $ 1 somewhere. When it comes to trading BitCoins for profit, the tax man says there are tax implications there, too. “When BitCoins are bought or sold like a commodity, any resulting gains or losses could be income or capital for the taxpayer depending on the specific facts,” ruled the CRA.”

AMD Q1 2013 earnings: softer $146 million net loss on $1.09 billion revenue
Just two days after the earnings report of its storied rival, AMD has followed suit with a Q1 2013 earnings report of its own. The company reported a net loss for the quarter of $ 146 million, which stings, but isn’t quite so painful as the $ 473 million loss that it took just one quarter earlier. Meanwhile, AMD revenue of $ 1.09 billion is more or less flat from the previous quarter, but has fallen by $ 500 million since Q1 of the previous year. The announcement was enough to make investors wince, as AMD’s stock price is now declining in after-hours trading. As for a silver lining, AMD emphasized that its gear will power the upcoming PS4. If Microsoft were to make a similar decision, then perhaps AMD could turn its financial frown upside-down.

AAP reports e-books now account for over 22 percent of US publishers’ revenue
It’s well off the triple year-over-year growth that e-books saw a few years ago, but the latest report from the Association of American Publishers shows that e-books did inch up even further in 2012 to account for a sizeable chunk of overall book sales. According to its figures, e-books now represent 22.55 percent of US publishers’ total revenue — up from just under 17 percent in 2011 — an increase that helped push net revenue from all book sales up 6.2 percent to $ 7.1 billion for the year. As the AAP notes, this report also happens to mark the tenth anniversary of its annual tracking of e-book sales; back at the beginning in 2002, their share of publishers’ net revenue clocked in at a mere 0.05 percent. The group does caution that the year-to-year comparison back that far is somewhat anecdotal, however, given changing methodologies and definitions of e-books.

HP Misses, Q4 2012 Revenue Down 7% To $30B, $6.9B Net Loss, $8.8B Write-Down For Autonomy Acquisition
HP’s earnings for Q4 ending on October 31 show a gloomy quarter. Revenue is down 7 percent to $ 30 billion compared to Q4 2011. But the real problem comes from GAAP net income, with a net loss of $ 6.9 billion, or $ 3.49 per share, compared to a slim net profit of $ 0.2 billion for Q4 2011. Non-GAAP diluted earnings per share is at $ 1.16 compared to $ 1.17 year-over-year. Most of the bad news comes from a huge $ 8.8B write-down for $ 10.2 billion Autonomy acquisition due to accounting fraud. In its earnings document, HP cites “serious accounting improprieties, disclosure failures and outright misrepresentations.” According to Reuters, analysts forecasted net income of $ 2.2 billion on revenue of $ 30.4 billion. The write down was unexpected and represents the vast majority of HP’s loss. Without it, it would have been a slight miss for HP. Developing…
