Artificial Muscles Pack a Mean Punch

sciencehabit writes “Here’s a twist: Scientists have designed a flexible, yarn-like artificial muscle that can also pack a punch. It can contract in 25 milliseconds—a fraction of the time it takes to blink an eye—and can generate power 85 times as great as a similarly sized human muscle. The new muscles are made of carbon nanotubes filled with paraffin wax that can twist or stretch in response to heat or electricity. When the temperature rises, the wax melts and forces the nanotubes to contract. Such artificial muscles, the researchers say, could power smart materials, sensors, robots, and even devices inside the human body.”

X Prize adopts NASA guidelines for protecting lunar heritage sites, Buzz Aldrin punch averted

X Prize adopts NASA guidelines for protecting lunar heritage sites

NASA hopes that one small step by Google’s Lunar X Prize will eventually lead to a giant leap in protecting historical sites on the moon. The X Prize Foundation announced that it will adopt guidelines released by the space agency last year to help preserve lunar heritage sites. The move comes at a crucial time as a new space race increases the possibility of an imminent moon landing, according to NASA. Google’s Lunar X Prize alone currently has 26 contestants worldwide vying to land a robot on the lunar surface by 2015. NASA stressed that their recommendations aren’t law and “do not represent mandatory U.S. or international requirements.” Examples include approach and landing guidelines to minimize disturbance, contamination and degradation of Apollo mission sites. That certainly sounds more reasonable than, say, plopping some dude in a spacesuit at a lunar outpost to shoot trespassers with a plasma shotgun while yelling, “Get off my property!” In the meantime, feel free to mosey on over to the PR after the break.

XKCD: Punch Me In The Face If I Use Klout

kloutI don’t understand Klout. I’ve convinced myself that it’s best that way. I just avoid it, really. Grading a person’s social media influence on a scale of 100 seems like something popular girls would do in high school.

Like Alexia said last year, nobody gives a damn about your Klout score. I honestly didn’t give a damn about my Klout score until I heard about the deals with airlines. That said, free perks do not outweigh worrying about a seemingly arbitrary scoring system. Today’s XKCD comic nails it. Please, Internet, if I ever write about Klout in any way, punch me square in the face.

punch ipadHave you ever wanted a chance to dress Rick Santorum? What about listening to a playlist of your favorite dictators tackling your favorite musical standards? Now you can, thanks to a new app called Punch.

Punch Media co-founder and CEO David Bennahum says the goal was to create “culturally relevant content that could only exist on a tablet” — not on a website or a printed magazine. The format is something called “The Culture Shelf,” where you can tap on different icons leading to Punch’s features. Most of those features are like op culture games, or are at least interactive in some way.
