Ubuntu Developing Its Own Package Format, Installer

An anonymous reader writes “While complementing Debian APT/DPKG, Canonical is now developing their own package format. The new package format has promised highlights of having no dependencies between applications, each package would install to its own directory, root support wouldn’t always be required, and overall a more self-contained and easier approach for developers than it stands now for Debian/Ubuntu packages. The primary users of the new packaging system would be those distributing applications built on the Ubuntu Touch/Phone SDK. The initial proof-of-concept package management system is written in Python and uses JSON representation.” This quote from the post by Canonical’s Colin Watson bears repeating: “We’ll continue to use dpkg and apt for building the Ubuntu operating system, syncing with Debian, and so on.”

Google Apps discontinues basic package, asks new customers to pony up $50 per user for premium

Google Apps discontinues basic package, asks all new customers to pony up $ 50 per user for premium

Looking towards Mountain View to provide a suite of digital tools for your new business? Make sure to pen per-user costs into your ledger — Google Apps isn’t free anymore. According to Google’s enterprise blog, the basic Google Apps package is being abandoned to streamline the service, offering businesses a single, $ 50 per user option that promises 24/7 phone support, 25GB inboxes and a 99.9% uptime guarantee. Pre-existing free customers can still hum along unmolested, of course, and the standard pricing doesn’t apply to schools or universities, either. Personal Google accounts are still free too, doling out gratis Gmail and Drive access to anyone with a unique user name. The team hopes that streamlining the Apps will allow it to provide better service, possibly offering enterprise users new features on a faster timetable.

Why Did Google Buy BufferBox? Because The Entire Mail And Package Delivery System Is Broken

4372183674_874289f939_zToday, Google bought an Ontario-based company called BufferBox. In a way, it kind of came out of left field. Since it’s a Google Ventures company, one can guess that those on Google’s campus were very familiar with the service, which provides an easy alternative to waiting around for packages at your house.

Not only is package delivery a bummer, because things get lost, hitting up your mailbox when you get home isn’t that much fun either. The worst is when you don’t even have a mailbox and you come home to twenty pieces of junkmail slipped under your door. The mail delivery system is broken and old. It’s ripe for…disruption.

Motorola RAZR i review: Intel’s 2GHz processor in a small, Android ICS package

Motorola RAZR i review

If you’re getting a serious dose of déjà vu, we’re right there with you. The RAZR i is a version of Motorola’s Droid RAZR M that’s headed to Europe and South America with a few differences. For the most part, though, it’s cut from the same Kevlar cloth: you get a 4.3-inch AMOLED screen with qHD (960 x 540) resolution, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 2,000mAh battery and 5GB of built-in storage — with a microSD slot for expansion.

So what’s different? On the outside, the RAZR i gets a physical, two-stage camera button. It’s a welcome addition, but Intel reckons that its 2GHz processor is what you should be concerned with. It’s the highest-clocked Medfield processor we’ve seen yet — and perhaps more importantly, it’s been placed in a core phone-maker’s device. We’ve already come a long way from the Orange-branded San Diego. So how does this compare to the Qualcomm-powered (and LTE-capable) RAZR M? Will this Intel iteration charm us the same way? Join us after the break to find out.

Panasonic AG-AC90 professional camcorder: three CMOS sensors in a handheld package for $2,250

DNP Panasonic AGAC90

While filmakers have gone gaga over huge sensor’d video cameras, there’s still a need for smaller chips and pro features — to that end, Panasonic has just announced the AG-AC90 AVCCAM. Destined for event and corporate users, it features three smallish 1/4.7-inch CMOS sensors (“3MOS” in company-speak), a 12X zoom, native 1,920 x 1,080 at 60p, 60i, 30p and 24p, and a five-axis image stabilizer. As for video quality, there’s a new “premium professional” recording mode with 28 Mbps throughput at 60p, on top of 24 Mbps and 17 Mbps modes. With two memory card slots, the camcorder supports Panasonic’s proprietary UHS-1 cards, and fortunately works with SDXC and SDHC to boot. It’s slated to arrive in “late fall 2012,” according to the company, and will ring the register at $ 2,250. So, if the first thing that pops into your mind is not DOF, but zebras, timecode and XLR inputs, check the PR for all those specs.

ViewSonic ViewPad E72 hits FCC: ICS in a 7-inch package

This year has already seen a fair share of ViewPads — with ViewSonic outing the E70 and 10e tablets at CES and introducing three more slates ahead of MWC — but the more the merrier, right? According to the company’s latest FCC filing, the ViewPad E72 will be fleshing out the already well-padded lineup. The E72 runs Android 4.0 on a 7-inch, 1,024 x 600 display, and packs a 1GHz Cortex A9 CPU under the hood. Storage is limited to 8GB, but that’s expandable up to 32GB via a microSD card. The 0.86-pound slate has a 0.3-megapixel camera (no rear-facing shooter here) and is rated for up to four hours of battery life. Think this might be the budget-priced serving of ICS you’ve been waiting for? Click through to the user manual, or hit up the source link for a rundown of the E72′s specs.
