Nintendo 3DS XL Circle Pad Pro review: just like the original, but bigger

Nintendo 3DS Circle Pad Pro review: just like the original, but bigger

Nintendo seems to have a knack for repeat performances. Nintendo DS? Quickly supplanted by the DS Lite — and the DSi didn’t last too long either before it was succeeded by the DSi XL. Even the 3DS saw a revision, when it was supersized last summer. These redesigns typically don’t change more than the device’s size, but when the 3DS XL was announced, some gamers were left wanting. Didn’t the original 3DS get an accessory specifically to address the lack of a second analog pad? Why didn’t Nintendo take the opportunity to add dual-analog controls? Well, if that happened, Nintendo couldn’t release an encore Circle Pad Pro accessory, could it? Let’s take a look at the 3DS XL Circle Pad Pro and see what’s changed.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 drops original TecTile support, requires new TecTile 2

Don’t get too attached to that collection of TecTiles if you’re upgrading to a Galaxy S 4. AnandTech has discovered that Samsung’s newer phone includes an NFC chipset that can’t read the older TecTiles, which rely on a less common tag type to register our taps instead of the NFC Forum’s standards. Customers aren’t being left in a bind, however. Samsung has confirmed that it’s about to release a follow-up, TecTile 2, which adheres to the official format while supporting the company’s older NFC-equipped phones. The fully modernized tags will be ready sometime in the “coming weeks.” That doesn’t offer much immediate relief for GS3-to-GS4 upgraders whose TecTile layouts have suddenly been reduced to decorations, but those buyers should at least get the replacements they seek before long.

Amazon Nears Debut of Original TV Shows

First time accepted submitter bakerharis writes with an article about Amazon’s attempt to break into creating conventional television style episodic shows, but with a different model from the manistream media companies. “Amazon’s foray into TV production is unique in the way it saves money. Every spring, traditional TV networks like ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox order dozens of pilots and show them to focus groups. Executives pick just a handful to make into series. Then, they commission 13 episodes of each promising show, with each one potentially costing a few million dollars. Many episodes won’t ever air if the first few don’t attract big audiences.” Amazon, instead, has created 14 pilot shows, and is letting a cross section of customers in the U.S., UK, and Germany react to them to see which shows might be worth making more of.

The moves come as some have observed that Rovio has of late fallen out of the top 80 highest grossing iPhone apps — for the first time since May 2010.

Netflix original series House of Cards gets its first trailer video

We’re still a few months away from the debut of Netflix’s new series House of Cards, but the streaming company has posted a trailer on its service and on YouTube giving us an early peek. You can check it out after the break, or head to the Netflix site and see the new page it’s whipped up to promote the show that’s accessible whether or not you subscribe to the service. That’s also where it plans to add behind the scenes content, reviews and other promo material as the February 1st launch approaches. The trailer is brief, but the style and everything we can see of star Kevin Spacey as Congressman Francis Underwood has the feel of a high quality production. This path is already well worn by AMC, HBO, Showtime and others trying pump up value by adding exclusive new shows (Lilyhammer also aired on Norwegian TV) on top of existing catalog movie offerings. We’ll see if the critics and subscribers put it on a par with shows like Game of Thrones, Mad Men, Dexter or Breaking Bad, and how viewers react to Netflix’s strategy of making all the episodes available at once.

Having put the phat back in phablet with its original 4:3 aspect ratio, 5-inch Optimus Vu, LG seems bent on releasing a successor already, the Optimus Vu II, according to a leak from Korean blog Bad IT Tong. The new Galaxy Note II challenger would carry the same form factor and 1080 x 768 IPS screen as the current Vu model, while doubling the RAM to 2GB, bumping the Qualcomm processor to an 8960 1.5GHz dual-core model (not the international quad-core version) and keeping the LTE radio from its US Intuition variant. It would come out of the box with Android 4.0, an 8-megapixel rear shooter, 32GB of storage and a 2080 mAh battery, judging by the leaked image above — all specs we’ve seen before. There’s no word yet on US pricing, availability, a stylus or an intriguing universal remote app teased by LG, but recent purchasers of the original Optimus Vu might be feeling left in a technology wake.

Amazon Tries Its Hand At More Original (And Crowdsourced) Content With Blackburn Burrow Digital Comic

blackburn burrowAmazon, like its competitor Netflix, has been making some moves to increase the amount of exclusive, original content under its brand, and today it took one more step in that direction with the news that Amazon Studios will be launching its first made-in-house digital comic, a version of the “Blackburn Burrow” Civil War story.

Originally a screenplay from Jay Levy, the story is also being used by Amazon to try something else: crowdsourced creation. The company says that the idea to launch the digital comic comes out of its own community feedback — so essential to Amazon’s whole business model in the form of user reviews. The project, it says, will be used to continue to gather further feedback to decide whether it should then develop the Levy screenplay into a full motion picture, which would also be developed by Amazon Studios.

German court upholds ban on original Galaxy Tab 10.1

While Samsung was more than willing to redesign its flagship tablet in the face of the German court’s ruling last year, the higher regional court in Dusseldorf maintains that the original still can’t be sold within its borders. As Samsung and Apple continue their legal fisticuffs worldwide, the claim from Cupertino that the 10.1-inch Android tablet is too similar to its own iPad has seen more attention than most. Samsung returned the favor by counter-suing over mobile technology patents, although it’s been just as unfortunate here, losing two out of the three infringement claims. The final case will be ruled on in early March. Today’s decision will also encompass the Galaxy Tab 8.9, although given that this ruling is based on Germany’s own unfair competition law, it makes it unlikely to be replicated elsewhere. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Tab 10.1N remains on shelves — and very desperate tablet fans just a short drive away from neighboring countries still able to sell the original.

YouTube’s got big plans for web TV: specialized channels with niche and original content

YouTube’s come quite a long way from its roots as a repository for random videos from the public. It’s gone from “Chocolate Rain” and the Tron guy to streaming Disney classics and now creating original, quality content. The New Yorker spoke extensively with YouTube’s Global Head of Content Robert Kyncl about the site’s future plans, and YouTube’s got its sights set on grabbing a big slice of TV’s $ 300 billion pie. Kyncl thinks the future of TV is in niche content, and YouTube’s original channels are just the vehicle to deliver it direct to your digital door. The site is commissioning people and companies to create the channels (as opposed to individual shows or pieces of content) which gives the creators freedom to program their channels as they see fit — all YouTube asks is that they provide a certain number of hours of programming per week. This production model is apparently pretty attractive to content producers, given the talent that’s on board and the amount of content that’ll be rolling out over the next six months.

The idea is that all the original content will get people watching YouTube for longer periods of time, and in turn grant more opportunities to reap ad revenue. Of course, these specialized channels don’t provide the wide advertising reach of traditional television, but they do allow advertisers to target very specific audiences with focused ads. That presumably provides them with better bang for their buck. Time will tell if YouTube’s new plan will win the war against traditional television and web TV (including Kyncl’s former employer Netflix), but free, quality on-demand content certainly sounds good to us. Get a fuller accounting of Kyncl’s vision at the source below, and feel free to sound off in the comments if you’re picking up what he’s putting down.

Whaaa? The original Motorola LapDock can now be yours for $50

Remember the good ‘ol days (specifically, this past February) when the first Motorola LapDock cost as much as $ 500 up front and nearly got laughed out of AT&T stores? The sleek Webtop accessory compatible with the Motorola Atrix 4G — and no other device whatsoever — has come down a long way, as it’s now available for a mere $ 50 (not counting the more expensive 4GB data plan AT&T requires you to be on when using it, of course). Indeed, it appears that a whole zero has been shaved off of the LapDock’s price tag, finally making it a tempting deal for anyone still packing the Atrix around. We’re thinking that AT&T’s trying to clear out remaining stock prior to giving the dock a proper retirement, but does this lower cost give you pause to consider purchasing one after all this time? If so, head to the source to take another look.
