We’d heard talk long, long ago of Verizon hooking up with VMware for a virtual workspace on its smartphones, and we can at last say that it’s more than just chatter. Starting today, Verizon’s business customers can buy VMware’s Horizon Mobile for their Android devices. The solution gives corporate phones a common desktop with encrypted apps, data and policies that can’t be touched from the device’s regular environment. While this puts the Verizon-VMware partnership in competition with the likes of BlackBerry Secure Work Space and Samsung Knox, it won’t be a perfect match for those services: the two companies are asking $ 125 per person for Horizon Mobile, and the initial device support is oddly limited to the LG Intuition and Motorola Droid RAZR M (neither is pictured here). Nonetheless, the deal might be a good fit for companies that would rather tie their phones to a single carrier than any one hardware manufacturer.

Call it a deal, offer or a bargain — isn’t a discount by any name just as sweet? Microsoft seems to think so, and it recently retired Bing Deals in favor of a locally focused newcomer: Bing Offers. Like its predecessor, Offers culls discounts from a number of sources, but rather than pulling deals from all over the web it focuses on group-discount bargains from outfits like Livingsocial, Groupon and Homerun. The aggregator spreads the discounts across the standard categories: food activities, health and fitness, beauty, travel and retail / services. Although the name has changed, a Microsoft spokesperson told TechCrunch that Offers is essentially the latest update to Bing Deals, noting that the site has gone through “a number of iterations” since it launched in 2011. Although SimCity has become relatively stable following its problematic launch, there are naturally still ongoing bugs that the folks at EA Maxis have been working to fix. Thankfully, that version 2.0 update that was teased just over a week ago now has an arrival date of April 22 at 4PM ET. Included in the update are 26 bug fixes, along with data map color filters, a color-correct HUD for the colorblind setting and the action of mayors traveling from their mansions to their jobs. Sadly, an offline mode is still no more than wishful thinking, but at least that OS X version should still be on track for a June 11th release. You’ll find all the details about your virtual city’s soon-to-arrive enhancements at the source link — expect some server downtime, by the way, when the update itself hits.

There’s nothing worse than seeing a handy new update hit your favorite app on the wrong OS. Luckily, time heals all wounds platform fragmentation. TuneIn’s Android app has just been updated with TuneIn Live, a content discovery interface introduced on iOS back in February. What this really amounts to is an extra tab on the app’s main screen, but what it offers is pretty neat: a customizable layout of eight tiles, each previewing live music representative of its respective category. Users can peek at what various stations are playing at a glance, casually flipping through their favorite genre’s live offerings by swiping each tile individually. It’s nothing we haven’t already seen from the folks at TuneIn, but its nice to see the app updating consistently across platforms. Well, the Blackstone Group and investor Carl Icahn clearly don’t think so, with the Wall Street Journal reporting that both have contacted the committee of Dell’s board just before Friday’s shutoff deadline. The would-be bidders are reported to be working on their actual offer amounts, and in the process buying them four more days thinking time. Reuters reports that Blackstone’s tentative offer is already in, according to sources, but at this time the company is yet to comment. Despite a recent slump in profits, Michael Dell surprised many when he announced his intention to buy back the eponymous firm in a deal with Microsoft for $ 24.4 billion. So, if the founder thought he had the keys to the old estate back, he might just have to wait a little longer.

The botched launch of the new SimCity game has upset many this week, however there is a little good news. EA Maxis exec Lucy Bradshaw posted that the company is working on its server issues, with capacity reportedly up 120 percent in the last 48 hours and “disrupted experiences” down 80 percent. As a way of making up for a launch that was “dumb” for not anticipating far more players and activity than seen in its beta, EA will offer all those who’ve activated a copy by March 18th a free PC game download. There’s no word on which game(s) from the EA portfolio will be available but users will be notified by email. The one thing they won’t be getting however is what many are asking for: an offline option that avoids all the server mess and entanglements of always-on DRM.

We’ve seen our fair share of rugged smartphones, but there’s a certain amount of attention due when a heavy equipment builder like Caterpillar gets involved. Its newest smartphone, the CAT B15, undoubtedly has the survivability you’d expect from a company that makes bulldozers: the aluminum-and-rubber shell can survive 5.9-foot drops on to hard concrete, stay immersed in 3.3 feet of water for half an hour and keep working in temperatures between -4F to 122F. Just don’t expect top-flight performance elsewhere. While we’re big fans of the CAT B15 shipping with Jelly Bean, its 4-inch WVGA screen, dual-core 1GHz Cortex-A9 chip, 512MB of RAM and 5-megapixel camera won’t have many of us giving up our faster, more fragile devices. The phone’s £299 and €329 European prices (about $ 437) could still lead to the more accident-prone among us picking up a CAT B15 when it ships in March.
