The Markets that Startup Founders are Missing

A common piece of advice given to entrepreneurs may lead them to overlook or dismiss good ideas.

I read a headline on TechCrunch this week about how the startup, Proven, is helping people build resumes and apply for jobs from their smartphones. My immediate reaction was to think this is a ridiculous idea. Really, if a job opening is so great that I want to drop everything to apply, wouldn’t I at least take a few minutes to get to a PC?

Going Off the Fiscal Cliff Could Mean Missing the Next Hurricane Sandy

Lasrick writes “Alex Knapp has an excellent article pointing out that NOAA satellites enabled NOAA to predict the ‘left hook’ of Hurricane Sandy into the Eastern Seaboard, which in turn enabled local governments to prepare. Those satellites are at risk and there will be a gap of about a year between 2017 and 2018, when the old ones fail and the new ones are scheduled to launch. There’s no alternative to getting that data, and the so-called ‘fiscal cliff’ will drive an 8% cut to NOAA’s satellite program, so that those replacement satellites may go up even later than 2018.”

Gameplay: the Missing Ingredient In Most Games

An anonymous reader writes “Game designer Tadhg Kelly has an article discussing the direction the games industry has taken over the past several years. Gaming has become more of a business, and in doing so, become more of a science as well. When maximizing revenue is a primary concern, development studios try to reduce successful game designs to individual elements, then naively seek to add those elements to whatever game they’re working on, like throwing spices into a stew. Kelly points out that indie developers who are willing to experiment often succeed because they understand something more fundamental about games: fun. Quoting: ‘The guy who invented Minecraft (Markus “Notch” Persson) didn’t just create a giant virtual world in which you could make stuff, he made it challenging. When Will Wright created the Sims, he didn’t just make a game about living in a virtual house. He made it difficult to live successfully. That’s why both of those franchises have sold millions of copies. The fun factor is about more than making a game is amusing or full of pretty rewards. If your game is a dynamic system to be mastered and won, then you can go nuts. If you can give the player real fun then you can afford to break some of those format rules, and that’s how you get to lead rather than follow the market. If not then be prepared to pay through the nose to acquire and retain players.’”

Lookout Security & Antivirus for Android gets a makeover, lets missing phones have one last gasp

Lookout Security & Antivirus for Android gets big makeover, lets lost phones have one last gasp

Missing phone apps such as Find My iPhone often have a glaring weakness: as they depend on pings at regular intervals, they’re not much use at tracking down a lost device if the battery dies first. Enter a major revamp of Lookout’s Security & Antivirus app for Android. The updated title’s new Signal Flare component takes advantage of a phone’s tendency to go out in a blaze of wireless glory that marks its last location. By remembering where a phone was unintentionally laid to rest, Signal Flare helps track down a phone that might have died in the parking lot — or just underneath the couch. Should your phone remain safely in your pocket, you’ll likely still appreciate the reworked interface that blends in with Android 4.0 and beyond, the protection against click-to-call exploits and an activity feed that shows just what Lookout has been doing behind the scenes. Android users can get that extra reassurance today, and iOS users have been promised a parallel app in the future.

When Kickstarter Projects Go Missing

On Friday, we posted about Kickstarter’s new rules of engagement, including some new rules under which some of the most popular Kickstarter projects to date might never have surfaced. But what about ones that make it to the site, then disappear? Wired takes a look at what happens to those Kickstarter projects that for one reason or another get yanked from the site. (DMCA complaints apparently are often that one reason.)

Sorry We Missed You: YC-Backed BufferBox Solves The Problem Of Missing Packages

BufferBoxOfficialLiving in Brooklyn, NY (the place where package deliveries go to die), I know better than anyone the struggle of missing a package, tracking it down, and then traveling however long it takes to recover said package. It’s so much of a pain, in fact, that I often give up the second I see that “Sorry we missed you” sticker.

But a company fresh out of Y Combinator‘s Summer 2012 class is ready to disrupt this mayhem with a clever little box, a BufferBox. It’s a bit like Amazon Locker, where you have all your Amazon packages shipped to a relatively convenient location instead of missing them. However, BufferBox works with all of your packages (UPS, FedEx, USPS, and Amazon).

Groupon CEO Andrew Mason On Europe: We’re Too Pricey, We’re Missing Tech Mojo, And No One Knows Us

andrew-mason-groupon1
There was once probably a good reason for why Groupon needed to expand aggressively internationally when it did, buying up other daily deal operations, for fast, inorganic growth. But on today’s Q2 earnings call, those reasons didn’t really come up, with CEO Andrew Mason instead providing a lengthy explanation for why international, led by Europe, hasn’t been peforming very well for the company — growing by 31% while North America grew at twice that rate to 66%.

The reasons, Mason said, were threefold: in Europe (the bulk of Groupon’s intl business) the Groupon offers were too expensive for consumers; merchants weren’t as happy with the service; and because of integration issues, Groupon hasn’t been able to implement some of the technology it has developed to lure in more users. But on a wider level, he also noted that people on the street in Europe still don’t have much of a clue of what Groupon actually is.

Missing Paperwork Delays UK Broadband

How Android Phone Makers Are Missing the Marketing Boat

An anonymous reader writes “Why are Android device commercials showing giant robots and lightning bolts and not advertising features? Here is an interesting blog post of things Android device manufacturers could be doing to get ahead of Apple, but aren’t.” On a similar front, as a mostly happy Android user, I must admit envy for the jillions of accessories marketed for the iPhone, especially ones that take advantage of that Apple-only accessory port; maybe the Android Open Accessory project will help.
