Washington court rules Motorola can get millions, not billions, from Microsoft for its patents
Among the many patent cases currently ongoing between Motorola and Microsoft is one in US District Court in the state of Washington concerning standards-essential WiFi and h.264 patents. AllThingsD reports that while Motorola was requesting billions in royalties for the technology it owns, Judge James Robart — who invalidated a number of its patent claims a few months ago — ruled it’s entitled to around $ 2 million per year. The reason given? There’s so many patents in play, the judge determined that the amount Motorola sought would cost more than the Xbox 360 they’re being implemented in, and also that it hadn’t proven its patents were more valuable than those of other companies included in the same pool. All 207 pages of the decision are available beyond the source link if need more info on the hows and whys of today’s decision.

Facebook Gifts Available To Tens Of Millions Of Users In Time For The Holidays — Fab, Lindt, Pandora And Others On Board
Tonight at Facebook Gifts event at toy store Fao Schwartz, the company announced that Facebook Gifts is available to tens of millions of users starting today. Many new partners are on board as well: babyGap, Fab, Brookstone, Dean & Deluca, L’Occitane, Lindt, ProFlowers, Random House, Inc. and NARS Cosmetics, and subscription services Hulu Plus, Pandora and Rdio. Wines from Robert Mondavi Winery and Chandon will come in a couple of weeks. Tapjoy Co-founder Lee Linden took the stage on the giant piano made popular by Tom Hanks in Big. The theme of the conference was all about partners and availability, confirming that Facebook is committed to its new Gifts product. Facebook Gifts is the result of Karma’s acquisition. The company wants to make ecommerce more convenient by handling everything on the platform, from gift selection to payment and delivery. But Facebook’s main asset remains that it’s the dominant social network to share personal things with friends. Gifts are now something else available for sharing. You can even choose to share publicly that you made a gift on Facebook. Right after Hurricane Sandy, Facebook made possible to give to charities using the service. It reiterated tonight that the feature will remain available. When the company announced Facebook Gifts, it claimed that over 100 partners were already on board, including Uber, Starbucks, Warby Parker, 1-800-Flowers, Magnolia Bakery, Happy Socks, and Jessica Alba’s Honest Company. But it only rolled out to a few users in the U.S. While American users are still first, rollout is much faster than anticipated as tens of millions of users can now use the service. It makes sense as this kind of service is particularly useful for holiday season. Facebook Gifts will certainly help revenue for Facebook and is a low risk business as partners handle stocks, availability and others tedious ecommerce issues. Another important side effect is that it will allow Facebook to collect home addresses and credit cards — data that could be valuable in the future.

How Solar-Based Microgrids Could Bring Power to Millions
Millions of the world’s poorest lack power. Microgrids could be a clean-energy solution.
The village of Tanjung Batu Laut seems to grow out of a mangrove swamp on an island off the coast of Malaysian Borneo. The houses, propped up over the water on stilts, are cobbled together from old plywood, corrugated steel, and rusted chicken wire. But walk inland and you reach a clearing covered with an array of a hundred solar panels mounted atop bright new metal frames. Thick cables transmit power from the panels into a sturdy building with new doors and windows. Step inside and the heavy humidity gives way to cool, dry air. Fluorescent lights illuminate a row of steel cabinets holding flashing lights and computer displays.

After Recent US Storms, Why Are Millions Still Without Power?
Hugh Pickens writes points out a report from Jamie Smith Hopkins that “The unusual nature of the ‘derecho’ is complicating efforts to get everyone’s much-needed air conditioning up and running again as more than 1.4 million people from Illinois to Virginia still remain without power and power companies warn some customers could be without power for the rest of the week in the worst hit areas. Utilities don’t have enough staff to handle severe-storm outages – the expense would send rates soaring – so they rely on out-of-state utilities to send help, says Stephen Woerner, Baltimore Gas and Electric’s (BGE) chief operating officer. Hurricane forecasts offer enough advanced warning for utilities to ‘pre-mobilize’ and get the out-of-state assistance in place but the forecast for Friday’s walloping wind was merely scattered thunderstorms. ‘No utility was prepared for what we saw in terms of having staff available that first day,’ says Woerner. But is it a given that a strong storm would cause this magnitude of damage to the electricity grid? ‘Even without pursuing the extremely expensive option of burying all of the region’s electrical lines, the utilities can and do take steps between bouts of severe weather to prevent outages,’ writes the Baltimore Sun, adding that consumer advocates are concerned that utilities invest sufficiently in preventive maintenance. ‘Tree trimming and replacement of old infrastructure — particularly in areas that have been shown to be vulnerable to previous storms — helps prevent outages.’”

Analogue TV is being switched off, and the low-res news service looks like going with it. Millions of Subscribers Leaving Cable TV for Streaming Services
suraj.sun writes “Netflix and Hulu are convincing millions of cable, satellite and telco subscribers to cut the cord and dive into video streaming. That’s the conclusion of a new report released this week by the Convergence Consulting Group, which finds that 2.65 million Americans canceled TV subscriptions between 2008-2011 in favor of lower-cost internet subscription services or video platforms. Though Convergence co-founder Brahm Eiley projects that the number of people opting out of TV subscription services will begin to slow in 2012 and 2013. Part of the problem, Eiley argues, may be the rising price tag for streaming rights to programming which could cause fiscal fits for Netflix.”

Samsung may cough up millions over kaput TVs
A class action lawsuit filed by owners of faulty Sammy TVs has finally reached a settlement. The manufacturer has promised to foot the bill for new repairs, reimburse for previous repairs and hand out up to $ 300 to customers who no longer possess their broken TVs but can prove they once did. The fault can affects any of the models listed above — possibly up to seven million sets in total — and centers on an errant capacitor in the power circuit that stops the TV turning on, makes it slow to turn on, produces a “clicking sound” or makes it cycle on and off. If you think you’re affected then check the source link for details on what to do next. Curious to know how much the lawyers got? A cool half-million for their troubles, which means they’ll be upgrading to OLED.
