Why Cisco Loves the Smart Grid

The electricity grid is in the midst of a transition from older proprietary networks to one that resembles the Internet.

When you talk to Cisco about energy, you’re reminded of what the nebulous smart grid term actually is. It is, at its core, a network and Cisco, whose networking gear is pervasive on the Internet, wants a big hand in how it gets built.

Woz: Windows Phone is ‘beautiful,’ Android ‘no contest,’ still loves iPhone, ask again tomorrow

Woz: Windows Phone is 'beautiful,' Android no 'contest,' still loves iPhone, ask again tomorrow

When Steve Wozniak talks mobile, people love to listen. Last time we checked in, he was lauding some of Android’s finer points, and now he’s raining praise on Windows Phone. In an interview with A New Domain, the Apple co-founder was all too happy to share his recent positive experiences with the Espoo / Redmond collaboration. In particular, Woz waxes about how intuitive the interface is, and how naturally apps lead you around. He goes on to say how there’s nothing he’s seen that isn’t more beautiful (than iOS and Android) on the Windows system, before claiming Android is “no contest” when it comes to the interface. It’s not all lemonade and roses, however, as he then admits he’s no fan of the voice control functionality compared to the other two platforms. When pushed to admit what he uses as default, it’s still the iPhone — two of them in fact — but Woz’s ability to see the best in all mobile operating systems will be sure to further confirm his status as one of tech’s most liked. Head down to the source to hear for yourself.

zuckftc copyFacebook and the FTC made peace this morning, after the government agency complained that the social network violated user privacy. The two reached a settlement which will fundamentally change the way Facebook deals with privacy  moving forward — including measures like bulking up its privacy division and submitting to new privacy audits every two years.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasized that he did not take the issue of consumer privacy lightly in a public statement, ”Not one day goes by when I don’t think about what it means for us to be the stewards of this community and their trust.”

ASUS G74SX-A1 gaming laptop gets rated, loves a bit of Battleship

The 1982 Lockheed Sea Shadow may be rusting away in Suisun Bay, but its Commie-spooking contours haven’t been forgotten. They apparently inspired the design of the Asus G74SX-A1, which just won a HotHardware recommendation for its cheese-eschewing looks as well as its performance, efficient cooling and realistic $ 1749 price tag. For once, the Core i7-2360QM CPU coupled with a GeForce GTX 560M and generous 12GB dollop of DDR-1333 RAM actually conspired to surpass the manufacturer’s 3DMark benchmark claims. It wasn’t flawless though: overall computing performance was middling compared to rivals; the speakers were shoddy when it came to producing music rather than explosions; and the 17.3-inch Full HD display was slightly wasted on some games that only ran smoothly with high quality settings at 1280×720. Still, all this naval talk makes us fancy some Silent Hunter 4 — and that should play just fine. Check out source link lurking below for the full review.
