Foursquare updates app for Windows Phone 8, brings lock screen notifications and NFC check-ins

Foursquare updates app for Windows Phone 8, brings lock screen notifications and NFC checkins

Foursquare’s been rather attentive to the other mobile plaforms this year, releasing updates for Android, BlackBerry and iOS in 2013. The time has finally come for Microsoft mobile users as well, as a fresh WP8-compatible version has just hit the Windows Phone app store. Version 3.0 lets users pin people and places to Start screens, provides lock screen notifications and lets folks check-in and share via NFC. Oh, and should you grow weary of using swipes and taps, the addition of speech controls allows you to search and check-in using only your voice. Should you be among the socially-inclined Microsofties, you know what to do.

Xbox 720 Could Require Always-On Connection, Lock Out Used Games

MojoKid writes “Sony’s next-generation PS4 unveil is just two weeks away, which means leaks concerning both it and Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox Durango (sometimes referred to as the Xbox 720), are at an all-time high as well. Rumors continue to swirl that the next iteration of Xbox will lock out used games entirely and require a constant Internet connection. New games would come with a one-time activation code to play. Use the code, and the game is locked to the particular console or Xbox Live account it’s loaded on. Physical games will still be sold (the Durango reportedly supports 50GB Blu-ray Discs), but the used game market? Kiboshed. If this is true, it’s an ugly move on Microsoft’s part. Not only does it annihilate the right of first sale, it’ll eviscerate any game store or business that depends on video game rentals for revenue.”

Evernote's Windows Phone app gets PIN lock, Business support in updateEvernote has been one busy bee, er, pachyderm lately — extending its proverbial trunk to a more professional crowd with the launch of Evernote Business and even cozying up to Samsung’s Terminator-sounding T9000 smart-fridge. Nokia to lock down access to Navifirm and early firmware images later this month

There’s some potentially bad news for Nokia users who were willing to dabble in untamed firmware releases via the company’s online repository. Navifirm, which has inadvertently offered several early glimpses of updates for Nokia hardware, will shutter open access to its firmware repository at the end of the month. Starting in February, the system will require a “Nokia Online” login for access to both application and device software downloads. The brief announcement doesn’t detail whether this would involve a standard Nokia account or something else, but it might mean fewer previews — and a slightly longer wait for subsequent (and official) Lumia updates.

Microsoft explains the origins of Windows Phone 8′s home and lock screens

Windows Phone 8 home and lock screens

We’ve delved into just what we think of Windows Phone 8′s interface, but not what led Microsoft to the final layout. The company isn’t content to let us wonder — a pair of new company blog posts explain some (though not all) of what was involved in that birthing process. Ignore the marketing spin and you’ll learn that the wider, more densely packed home screen was chosen as much for balance as to stuff in more home tiles, and that it caused a momentary crisis for the app list as a result. The Redmond team goes on to justify choices behind the lock screen, such as why notifications are as customizable as they are, why the music controls fade and why there’s a failsafe for PIN attempts. Don’t expect to come out of the explanations suddenly craving a Lumia 920; just expect to make more sense of the OS inside.

Canadian DOJ Warned About Unconstitutionality of Copyright Digital Lock Rules

An anonymous reader writes “The Canadian House of Commons may have passed the Canadian DMCA, but
the constitutional
concerns with the copyright bill and its digital lock rules will likely
linger for years. Michael Geist has obtained
internal government documents that indicate that the Department of
Justice issued a legal opinion warning about the potential for
constitutional violations. The DOJ legal opinion warned of the need to
link circumvention with copyright infringement and of the particular
danger of not providing the blind with an exception. The Canadian law
misses the mark on both counts with no link to infringement and an
exception that blind groups say is ‘nullified’ by strict conditions.”

Windows 8 app keeps perps under virtual lock and key, frightens pedestrians (video)

Need something to sate that Windows 8-lust Microsoft stirred up with its Consumer Preview? Then take a gander at this in-development vehicle control app shown off at the company’s Redmond campus as part of this year’s Worldwide Public Safety Symposium. Developed by Modularis, an outfit known for their enterprise, federal and OEM automation solutions, the Metro-style application turns its host slate into a virtual controller, granting users remote access to door locks, sirens, lights, as well as the ability to pull cloud-based data — courtesy of Windows Azure — from multiple cars to determine GPS location. And, as you’ll see in the video after the break, it also has the unintended and wholly amusing benefit of freaking out innocent passers-by.

Anger With Game Content Lock Spurs Reaction From Studio Head Curt Shilling

MojoKid writes “Studios and publishers are fighting back hard against the used game market, with the upcoming title Kingdoms of Amular, the latest to declare it will use a content lock. In this case, KoA ups the ante by locking out part of the game that’s normally available in single-player mode. Gamers exploded, with many angry that game content that had shipped on the physical disc was locked away and missing, as well as being angry at the fact that content was withheld from used game players. One forum thread asking if the studio fought back against allowing EA to lock the content, went on for 49 pages before Curt Shilling, the head of 38 Studios, took to the forums himself. His commentary on the situation is blunt and to the point. ‘This is not 38 trying to take more of your money, or EA in this case, this is us rewarding people for helping us! If you disagree due to methodology, ok, but that is our intent… companies are still trying to figure out how to receive dollars spent on games they make, when they are bought. Is that wrong? if so please tell me how.’”

Testing the MongoDB Global Write Lock Improvements

rick446 writes “I took some time to benchmark the global write lock improvements in MongoDB 2.0. From the article: ‘MongoDB, as some of you may know, has a process-wide write lock… Per-database and per-collection locking is on the roadmap …, but it’s not here yet. What was announced in MongoDB version 2.0 was locking-with-yield. I was curious about the performance impact of the write lock and the improvement of lock-with-yield, so I decided to do a little benchmark, MongoDB 1.8 versus MongoDB 2.0.’”

Nook Tablet gets rooted, bootloader stays under lock and key

Jealous of that root-ready Kindle Fire, but not ready to trudge through the Amazon to get it? Don’t worry, you can stay huddled up with your Nook Tablet and get all the device rooting you want — with a few caveats. Although the good folks on the XDA Forums haven’t unlocked the slab’s bootloader just yet, they’ve managed to root the tablet all the same. Jumping through a few technical hoops (or stumbling across forum user Indirect’s one-click Windows utility) will score you access to the Android market and another way to sideload apps on the souped up slate. Custom ROMs? Not yet; in addition to killing the root with every device reboot, the locked bootloader is keeping the Nook’s tweaked build of Android 2.3 front and center. Hit up the source link below to get started.
