Cox and Verizon Wireless join forces, launch service bundles in Oklahoma

Image

It’s a moderately good day to be an Oklahoman. Wireless subscribers living near Oklahoma City or Tulsa will be among the first to reap the benefits of a new partnership between Cox Communications and Verizon Wireless that bundles services from both companies, letting customers sign up for packages that include video, internet and voice services from Cox, and wireless service from VZW at a discounted rate. They’ll also be eligible to receive debit cards valued at $ 100-400 if they make the switch to a co-sponsored bundle. You can head over to select retail outlets from either company to sign up, or hit up the source links past the break for more info.

Virgin Atlantic To Launch In-Flight Cell Phone Service

Virgin Atlantic logoHaving in-flight access to WiFi is quickly becoming a standard feature on modern airliners, but (thankfully) in-flight  cell phone service for voice calls is still a rarity and even outlawed in a number of countries, including the United States. If you’re flying Virgin Atlantic between London and New York in the near future, though, chances are that at least a few of your fellow travelers will be happily chatting away on their cell phones while you’re riding the jetstream somewhere over the Atlantic. Later this month, Virgin Atlantic is launching cell phone service on this route and plans to expand this service to ten more routes by the end of the year.

New Orleans’ First Tech Incubator, Launch Pad Ignition, Debuts Its Second Batch Of Startups

Screen shot 2012-05-04 at 9.58.47 PMLaunch Pad Ignition, the first tech incubator to make its home in the Big Easy, today officially unveiled the seven companies that participated in its second annual session.

The accelerator’s 12-week program began the second week of February and culminated yesterday with its own New Orleans rendition of the patented “Demo Day,” appropriately called “Launch Fest,” which we’ve been told is “Jazz Fest with startup steroids.” Launch Pad’s model is a bit different than that of the traditional accelerator, in that Co-founder Chris Schultz tells us it’s geared towards building traction, not offering big early funding.

BBC to launch app companion for Antiques Roadshow, asks you to price up British heritage

Antiques Roadshow companion app

Perennial evening schedule-filler Antiques Roadshow will launch a new companion app in the UK, connecting PCs, smartphones, tablets and BBC’s red button feature on TVs to the show, as it goes out live. It’s shaping up to be very different to the existing PBS app, this time combining your incredulity over whether a painting is really worth that much with a quiz format. You’ll be able to guess the value against the clock, with separate amateur and expert levels. (We’re all experts when it comes to 18th century pottery, right?). It’s the Beeb’s first public launch of its companion feature, following closed trials with shows like Frozen Planet. When it eventually launches in September, you’ll be able to poll the rest of the British Isles to see what they reckon before you make your decision. Until then, we’re stuck vocalizing our disbelief at the TV.

Comcast VOD coming to Boston TiVos, next gen X1 DVR platform could launch there too

Comcast VOD coming to Boston TiVos, next gen X1 DVR platform could launch there too

Comcast already reported its Q1 results earlier today but on the earnings call CEO of the cable division Neil Smit revealed its next generation X1 cloud DVRs (previously called Xcalibur and promised for a wide rollout to “hundreds of thousands” of customers this year) will launch in a major market in the second quarter. Light Reading cites sources indicating field testing is already under way in Boston and that it could launch in May which fits all too well because The Cable Show will take place there May 21st. In case you’ve forgotten, the quad-tuner X1 DVRs have an all new UI with support for third party apps and social media tie-ins, and will reportedly precede the company’s eventual push towards IP video. While that’s the rumor, what we do know is that TiVo has completed the rollout of Comcast video on-demand support to Premiere DVRs in the Bay Area, and also let us know that Boston, coincidentally, will be next. Customers in other areas can sign up on TiVo’s site at the link below for notifications when the feature goes live in their neck of the woods.

T-Mobile Prism leaked: entry-level Huawei smartphone to launch in May

While the design (and even the briefing slides) scream affordable, we’re sure there must be some Big Magenta customers aching for a keenly-priced smartphone fix. So here’s the Prism. Huawei‘s behind that T-Mobile face, cooking up a Android Gingerbread phone with a pretty weedy 600MHz processor and a 3.5-inch (480 x 320) touchscreen. A fixed-focus (yeah) 3.2-megapixel camera pokes out the back, while a microSD slot means you can extend space for those vaguely-almost-in-focus shots — the Prism arrives with a 2GB card already onboard. The phone looks set for a May 6th release date and TmoNews has several more slides with some extra launch details — you can check them out at the source below.

If you’re all about the phones, Nokia is pushing its Windows Phone 7 flagship with new “the smartphone beta test is over” ads — there’s also one of those embedded after the break. Nonprofit “Digital Public Library Of America” To Launch In April 2013

iconThe Google Books project (just today pared down a bit) always impressed me with its sheer scope. Offering modern e-books is all well and good, but that’s more of a business problem. It’s the scanning and free availability of thousands upon thousands of old books that struck me as a worthwhile endeavor.

But publishers and booksellers have been wary of the service, knowing that Google is a fan of free, and their scan-first, ask-permission-later strategy caused some consternation as well. And while access to all that knowledge is appreciated, it is lost on no one that the data is in the hands of a for-profit company.

Enter the Digital Public Library of America, which aims to create a similar catalog of works, but both more comprehensive and unimpeded by commercial motives. It’s been in the works for a while, but it seems it may finally launch as early as a year from now.

HP readying competitor for Amazon’s cloud computing, plans to launch soon

We’re still waiting to see where HP goes with webOS, but according to the New York Times it will officially launch a cloud computing service that competes with Amazon Web Services in the next couple of months. HP Senior VP and General Manager Zorawar Singh is quoted saying the currently in beta service projects as an alternative to what Amazon has built with a focus on personalized sales and service and additional tools for third party developers, as well as a system of small data centers around the world. Throw in analytics based on technology it’s obtained by purchasing Vertica and Autonomy, and maybe Meg Whitman’s ship has something here, but we’ll wait until the next Netflix is running its operations from this cloud before declaring it on the same level.

We’re still trying to dig up screenshots. The leaked memo — reprinted after the jump — links employees to a special purchasing program site for a special price on a Folio 13.
