Alibaba Group Launches Daily Deals Site Juhuasuan Overseas In Hong Kong & Taiwan

Juhuasuan logoAlibaba Group announced that it has launched Juhuasuan Overseas, a combination of C2C retail platform Taobao Marketplace and group shopping site Juhuasuan, in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Juhuasuan Overseas will offer merchandise and services from selected Taobao sellers in the same daily deals format as the original Juhuasuan, which is accessible only to customers in mainland China because cross-border shipping is not supported. Juhuasuan Overseas currently offers between 12 and 20 new group shopping deals each day, and will begin selling localized lifestyle services and travel deals to Hong Kong customers in a few weeks. Daphne Lee, director of Taobao International Business, said in a statement that the new Web site will leverage Taobao Marketplace and Tmall.com’s (one of Alibaba Group’s B2C e-commerce platforms) 2 million existing customers in Hong Kong and Taiwan. According to Alibaba Group, there were 1.4 million registered Taobao users in Hong Kong and 600,000 in Taiwan as of the end of 2012. Originally launched under Taobao Marketplace in March 2010, Juhuasuan was spun-off as an independent subsidiary of Alibaba Group in October 2011. Though it faced competition from other Chinese group-buying Web sites like Lashou, 55tuan, and Meituan, Juhuasuan has grown in part by partnering with local service providers throughout the country. That tactic has helped Juhuasuan grow into China’s top group-buying site, with 34 percent market share according to research group Dataotuan, double the share held by its next largest competitor, Meituan.

Xiaomi Phone 2 preps Hong Kong and Taiwan launch, seeks early local testers on Facebook

Xiaomi preps Hong Kong and Taiwan launch, recruiting early users on Facebook

We knew Xiaomi’s keen to bring its phones into the European market, but before taking that long-haul flight, the Chinese company is going to make a couple of stops in Asia. According to the latest updates on the company’s Twitter feed and a freshly-made Facebook group (under “Xiaomi Asia”), the Xiaomi Phone 2 will be hitting Hong Kong and Taiwan “in the near future,” and folks living in those two regions can enter a draw for a chance to become a guinea pig help test the phone’s localized MIUI ROM (in traditional Chinese, naturally) ahead of launch. CEO Lei Jun had previously stated that his company would expand into Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore by the end of this year, but due to the overwhelming demand of Qualcomm’s 28nm chipsets throughout the year, it’s unlikely that Xiaomi can realize its original plan in time. Regardless, from what we know, Xiaomi may partner with Chunghwa Telecom to sell the Xiaomi Phone 2 in Taiwan, whereas in Hong Kong it may utilize the same old online direct sale model to begin with — unlike Meizu who has a physical shop in the city, as well as a partnership with local carrier PCCW. Now, how about a full schedule for your world domination, Mr. Lei?

Xiaomi_logoChinese smartphone maker Xiaomi, which has been referred to as “the Apple of China,” strongly hinted at an expansion into Hong Kong on its official Twitter account. Though the tweet was cryptically worded, attached is a graphic featuring the company’s latest model, the Xiaomi Mi2, with specs listed in traditional Chinese characters (which is used in Hong Kong, but not mainland China), Hong Kong floral emblem the Bauhinia flower and a silhouette of the Hong Kong islands and peninsulas.

Lytro camera getting parallax effect and 3D display support, lands in Hong Kong (video)

Lytro light field camera on pool cue

Lytro isn’t done extending the usefulness of its light field camera just because we have manual controls. Another update due by the end of the year will take advantage of that focus-independent sensor to allow a parallax-based 3D effect in photos: invoke a ‘full’ focus in reviewing shots and you can start poking around the scene in a limited way without having ever touched a dual-sensor camera. Appropriately, we’re also getting support for examining photos on 3D monitors and TVs that emphasize the added depth. The promised features come hand-in-hand with Lytro’s immediate availability in Hong Kong, where 8GB blue and gray cameras are selling for $ 3,888 HKD ($ 502 US) and the 16GB red model goes for $ 4,688 HKD ($ 605). Check out our Chinese crew’s eyes-on look at the parallax effect in a video after the break.

Mechanical Donkey Kong game tests your barrel-jumping skills, patience

Mechanical Donkey Kong game

We’ve seen quite a few NES mods in our day, but we can’t say we’ve ever seen one hooked up to anything quite like this. Built by DIY-er Martin Raynsford, this contraption / work-of-art makes use of an Arduino (naturally) to relay signals from the NES controller to the Donkey Kong screen brought to life above, which was constructed with near pixel-perfect accuracy out of laser-cut parts. As Raynsford points out, though, things are still a bit limited in the game’s V1 state. There isn’t much of an actual “game,” for starters — just Mario stuck in the middle with a never-ending loop of barrels / ball bearings that you can jump over. A second version is planned with a greater degree of control, but we’re guessing the video for it won’t be quite as hypnotic as the one after the break.

Panasonic Lumix GF5 accidentally leaked by Hong Kong spokesperson?

Frequent social networkers will tell you that Instagram’s usually plastered with food photos and self-portraits, so we were quite surprised to see a product leak over there. After some careful inspection, we’re pretty certain that the above picture shows a legit Panasonic Lumix GF5, which from this angle bears much resemblance to the GF3 bar the grip. To add credibility here, the uploader is none other than Hong Kong celebrity Angelababy who happens to be the brand ambassador for Panny (oopsie!). Unsurprisingly, the twee model has already removed the offending picture from her account, but the direct image link still works.

You may be wondering: shouldn’t this Micro Four Thirds camera be the GF4 after the current GF3? Well, much like Chinese superstition, Japan also prefers to steer clear of the number 4 as it sounds the same as “death” in Japanese. For instance: there was no Lumix LX4 before the LX5. As for specs, Chinese website Nphoto reported earlier this month that the GF5 will also feature a 12-megapixel sensor but with a better signal-to-noise ratio and topping at ISO 12800, while on the back it’ll have a much sharper LCD with 920k dots (instead of just 460k on the GF3). Judging by the looks of things it shouldn’t be long before we see Angelababy presenting this new camera for real — let’s just hope that she gets to keep her job.

Sony Ericsson’s elusive Nozomi shows up in Hong Kong, still glowing nicely

It was only about a month ago when we first came across some clear shots of Sony Ericsson’s upcoming Nozomi (aka LT26i), and now it looks like someone in Hong Kong has also gotten hold of this pretty Android phone. HKEPC’s forum leakster, who claims to have received this image from a friend, doesn’t actually reveal much here (not even a codename), but he or she does confirm that a dual-core chip and a 720p LCD are packed within — this matches what we heard from the previous leak. Furthermore, we’re told that a Hong Kong carrier is already testing this device, so don’t be surprised if it pops up in the market within the next month or two.

Meizu to launch first store outside mainland China, opening in Hong Kong this month

That’s right, despite its short-lived battle with Apple last year, Meizu has finally decided it is time to make it out of China. Well, out of mainland China at least, as the company has chosen Hong Kong as its launch pad for entering the international market. In fact, back when we visited Meizu in Zhuhai late last year, its marketing director had already expressed interest in opening a flagship store in said city — more so as a status symbol, if not for profit — so we weren’t really surprised by this news, but we’re definitely happy for his gang.

Later this month, visitors of Mongkok will notice a brand new Meizu store pop up somewhere along Sai Yeung Choi Street (yes, that gadget street), where the upcoming dual-core, 4-inch 960 x 640 MX Android phone will also be sold starting in early January — just a tad later than its mainland counterpart. What’s more, the Hong Kong version will come with extra features such as Facebook, Google Mobile Services and various Android Market apps that are absent on the original MX. Prices and absolute date to be confirmed later this month, but either way, we have a feeling that we’ll be seeing some long lines again around China, if not Hong Kong.
