Leica teases Mini M camera, scheduled to debut on June 11th

Leica teases Mini M camera unveil for June 11 we leic sic

Leica seldom updates its camera lineup, so we’re especially intrigued to discover that it’s teasing a completely new model, the Mini M. On the camera maker’s website, this TBA model is represented by only a black box, tucked in between the full-frame M and the APS-C-loaded X2 (Micro M). There’s no other official info aside from its June 11th unveiling date, but Leica Rumors is poised to bet that this is the company’s first mirrorless entry. The site’s sources claim this model will thankfully not be a re-badged Panasonic Lumix — Hasselblad and Sony’s Lunar (a leather-adorned NEX-7) already did enough damage on that front.

Cricket launching Galaxy S 4 on June 7th, starting at $55 down

Cricket launching Galaxy S 4 on June 7th, starting at $ 55 down

The Galaxy S 4 is now readily available in the US, but it hasn’t had much sway with the prepaid crowd so far. Cricket should be addressing that deficit soon, as it just narrowed down its launch of the Samsung flagship to June 7th. The contract-free carrier is making up for being late to the party with a low up front price: customers can plunk down $ 55 to start an installment plan rather than pay the GS4′s full $ 600 cost in one shot. Would-be adopters will need to live in one of Cricket’s LTE coverage areas to pick up a GS4, but those who do may get a rare discount on a (mostly) fresh device.

Nook Simple Touch reportedly getting web browser, email client on June 1st

Remember that web browser that was found hiding in the Nook’s search function? It’s time could be nigh. According to a leaked memo acquired by TechCrunch, Barnes & Nobel will be updating the Nook Simple Touch and Simple Touch with Glowlight with an email app, web browser and an updated store next month. The update will reportedly be sent over the air starting on June 1st and rolling out to all devices in the following weeks. The idea isn’t too far fetched — the Simple Touch is running a skinned version of Android. Nook owners not willing to wait for the official patch can always root the device of course, which comes with some peripheral advantages. Check out TechCrunch for a look the full memo.

Samsung plans to launch 65-, 55-inch 4K TVs in June

Samsung plans to launch 55, 65inch 4K TVs in June

When Samsung unveiled its first 4K Ultra HD TV at CES this year, it said other sizes would follow, both larger and smaller than the initial 85-inch version. Now it’s apparently ready to fulfill part of that promise, announcing in Korea that 65- and 55-inch models will launch next month. Of course our next question is how these smaller models will compare to the $ 39,999 MSRP 85S9 UHD TV in price. Hopefully they’ll follow the path blazed by Sony, which recently introduced models at that size with pricing well below the $ 10,000 benchmark, although we expect Seiki’s 50-incher will still hold the crown for value pricing. The press release mentions they will feature Samsung’s upgradeable Smart TV platform and the “micro dimming ultimate” LED lighting of their larger cousin, but the odd “Timeless Gallery” frame / stand (pictured above on the 85-incher) was not listed.

Google+ Games to go dark after June 30th

Sure, Mountain View may be bolstering its gaming efforts on mobile platforms and the web, but it’s seen fit to give Google+ Games the pink slip. After June 30th, the game section on the titan’s social network will go dark, but Page & Co. note that some titles will still be playable on other sites. Depending on developer support, folks who’ve turned hard-earned cash into in-game credits may still be able to spend unused coin during a grace period or when playing the same games through other websites. It’s not entirely clear why Google is sunsetting the portal, but it could certainly be part of its grand plan to focus on fewer things.

Ubuntu Touch Developers Aim for Daily Phone Usability Before June

colinneagle writes with the latest Ubuntu Touch news. From the article: “The team behind Ubuntu Touch (aka ‘Ubuntu for Phones’) have committed to pushing forward to a ready-to-use version of the OS, one that the group will use to ‘eat their own dog food,’ by the end of May. What that means: Over the next few weeks, the team behind Ubuntu Touch is going to be attempting to implement enough functionality to make it possible to use Ubuntu on your phone (such as the Nexus 4) on a day-to-day basis. At which point their development team will be doing exactly that.” The developers are aiming just to have basic functionality working by the end of the month: calls, sms, data over wifi and cellular, a working address book, and preservation of user data across OS flashes.

Comcast reportedly axing Skype on Xfinity from June 1st

Well, Comcast’s idea to charge users $ 10 a month for set-top Skype hardware went as well as you could have expected. If DSLReports sources are correct, the offering will be quietly retired on June 1st due to, surprise surprise, “low adoption.” If you were one of the few triple-play customers who ponied up for the gear, fear not, as the leaked internal e-mail says that existing users will continue to be supported. Given that you can snag subscription-free gear from Logitech, Biscotti and others, it’s no surprise to see Skype on Xfinity joining Cisco’s Umi on the island of misfit telepresence devices.

Microsoft Windows 8.1 ‘Blue’ public preview will be released at Build in June

On the fence about heading to Build? Microsoft’s annual conference is scheduled from June 26-28, and developers in attendance will likely hear quite a bit more about the latest version of the company’s OS. MS will also make a public preview available during the event, Julie Larson-Green shared at the Wired Business Conference in New York City today. A final version of Windows 8.1 “Blue” is expected by the end of the year, bringing cosmetic updates and other features, such as a new side-by-side app view and Internet Explorer 11. In March, we managed to dig through pre-release build 9364 — it sounds like we’ll be able to take a much closer look at the new operating system this summer, but you can click through our gallery of screenshots for an early preview, right now.

GameStop confirms June 1 end to PlayStation 2 trade-ins, will continue selling used stock ‘for several months’

GameStop is shuttering its PlayStation 2 trade-in business as of June 1st, a company spokesperson confirmed to Engadget. “We can confirm that as of June 1st we will no longer be accepting the PS2 console or its related product for trades,” the statement reads. Several of GameStop’s retail locations confirmed to our sister site Joystiq that the June 1st date was accurate after a Reddit posting showed what appeared to be an in-store sign saying as much, and the statement today offers a bit more detail.

For instance, GameStop won’t end sales of used PlayStation 2 hardware, software and accessories — both in store and online — until “several months” after the June 1 cutoff. Those sales, of course, depend on “remaining stock from trades.” Additionally, GameStop reminded us that it’s totally pumped for the upcoming PlayStation 4. “We are very excited about the upcoming PS4 and are making room in our stores for it and other new platforms expected this fall,” the statement says. And hey, with all the extra space available in GameStop stores by “holiday 2013″ (when the PS4 is expected to land at retail), it looks like GameStop will be ready for business. For GameStop’s full statement, head below.

Our friends at Joystiq contacted multiple stores to confirm the news to confirm the news and many said the policy is indeed set to go into effect. Twitter gives API 10 apps a reprieve, lets them live until June 11th

Those who preferred Twitter’s earlier, more liberal ways have regarded May 7th with a sense of dread, as that’s when API 1.0 (and our chance at a truly competitive app ecosystem) was supposed to go dark. While the company isn’t about to reverse course, it is giving the refuseniks a break by delaying the shutdown until June 11th. More time is necessary for blackout tests, Twitter says. We wouldn’t lean too heavily on remaining API 1.0-era apps and services when that instability exists, but the extra month does allow for a gentler transition into API 1.1′s brave new world.

OUYA promises improved responsiveness, simplified game installs for June retail launch

OUYA promises external game storage, simplified game installs for June retail launch

The OUYA‘s off to a rough start, with reviewers — us included — encountering button sticking and faceplate issues with the controller, and a variety of complaints about the $ 99 game console’s OS software. A variety of backers also received their console in the mail with the controller’s removable faceplates already removed, having slipped off during shipment. OUYA’s addressing at least some of these concerns by the console’s June 4th launch, company CEO Julie Uhrman promises in a letter to backers on OUYA’s official site.

“Our software is constantly evolving,” Uhrman says. As such, OUYA has “a host of features” that it’s working on adding to the console ahead of its impending retail launch: “external storage for games, simpler game install process, more metrics for developers, controller support for video players, and more payment options.” But first, Uhrman says her team is “focused on optimizing the performance of our software (this mean responsiveness),” directly addressing criticisms of the console’s seeming lag between input and on-screen response. As for the controller, OUYA is “considering adding additional magnets” to help with the faceplate issue — the controller’s faceplates are attached via six magnets apiece, currently. It’s unclear if the controller will change in any other significant ways ahead of the console’s retail availability, but we’re hopeful that the button sticking issue is also addressed.

Early-backer GameStick consoles delayed to June release, Dev units now shipping

Fancied PlayJams’ GameStick Android gaming console enough to back it on Kickstarter earlier this year? The good news is that Dev units have been shipping to the roughly 600 who signed up, with the remaining ones set to head out within a week. The bad news? The early-backer versions are now set to arrive at doorsteps in late June instead of April because of high-demand, according to PlayJam. As its latest Kickstarter update details, the units will need stronger tooling than the silicon-based molds of the dev units to ensure that “tens of thousands” of them can be successfully made. Additionally, this will apparently force the company to ship these larger factory yields via sea transport rather than air, which also slows things down.

A case of success causing slowdowns it seems. Hopefully not much longer than these new estimates, too — while this breakout underdog is set to hit retailers like GameStop, that other Android-based console, OUYA, is already shipping out to backers — and its retail units are planned in June. You’ll find the full update from PlayJam at the source link.

OUYA available at retail on June 4 for TKTK DNP

The Android-powered $ 99 OUYA game console becomes available at retail on June 4th. The date was revealed this week during the Game Developers Conference. OUYA’s calling June 4th its “official launch date,” despite Kickstarter backers receiving units starting this month. Essentially, the two month waiting period between Kickstarter boxes and retail availability is being used as a consumer beta, giving OUYA time to adjust its software after getting feedback from early adopters.

It’s not clear if bundles will be available, but the game console itself and a controller (as well as power and HDMI cables, plus two AA batteries for the controller) are included in the $ 99 package. Major retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, and others are on board, so it shouldn’t be too hard locating one in June should your interested be piqued — and yes, pre-orders are available. Of course, it’s a pretty small little game console, so it might be a bit tough locating the thing with your eyes.

Microsoft Announces The Dates For Its Next Build Developer Conference: June 26-28 In San Francisco

msbuild2013logoBuild is Microsoft’s developer conference for its Windows, Windows Phone, Windows Server and Azure platforms and the company just announced that Build 2013 will take place June 26-28 at San Francisco’s Moscone Center. Registration will open next week, Tuesday, April 2 at 9am PT and early bird pricing for the first 500 registrants starts at $ 1,595. As Steve Guggenheimer, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President and Chief Evangelist, notes in today’s announcement, “it’s been a while since our last developer event in the Bay Area.” The last Build, which happened last October, right after the Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 launch, took place in Redmond, where the company put up a massive tent on its sprawling campus to host a few thousand developers. Build 2011 was held in Anaheim California. Guggenheimer, of course, didn’t reveal anything about the company’s plans for Build besides saying that Microsoft will “hare updates and talk about what’s next for Windows, Windows Server, Windows Azure, Visual Studio and more. Build is the path to creating and implementing your great ideas, and then differentiating them in the market.” Blue Earlier today, however, Frank X. Shaw, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Corporate Communications at Microsoft, publicly acknowledged that “product leaders across Microsoft are working together on plans to advance our devices and services, a set of plans referred to internally as ‘Blue.’” This, as far as I can see, marks the first time the company has publicly acknowledged this project and chances are we will hear quite a bit more about it come June 26. As is tradition at Microsoft now, Shaw also took a less than subtle swipe at Google in an earlier post today. “While some folks were out doing ‘spring cleaning,’ we used the opportunity to look back a bit at what has happened in the past season, and to look ahead at what we have coming,” wrote in post that recapped some of Microsoft’s product releases over the last year.
