Last October, Datahug, a ‘business networking automation’ startup, which is also being used by VCs, secured a €2.5 million Series A financing led by European VC DFJ Esprit. But it’s now adding to that pot. We’ve confirmed Salesforce has decided to join that round in an “expansion” of its Series A, which includes original investors Draper Fisher Jurvetson (in the US), DFJ Esprit (UK), Oyster Capital and leading Valley investor Ron Conway. The full A-round is now $ 4m and brings the total raised to $ 5.5M over two rounds.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 announced, joins the Android tablet line-up with a 7-inch screen
If an 8-inch stylus-enabled Galaxy Tablet wasn’t your cup of tea, perhaps Samsung’s new seven-inch model will do the trick. The Galaxy Tab 3 has gone official and the third iteration of the company’s first Android tablet arrives with a 1.2GHz processor, 8GB or 16GB of storage (with expansion up to 64GB), a 3- and 1.3-megapixel camera array and a substantial 4,000mAh battery. That 7-inch WSVGA (1,024 x 600) TFT display suggests it’s likely to be a keenly-priced slate, although we’re still waiting to hear on specifics. Samsung’s loaded up the Galaxy Tab 3 with Android 4.1 and says that the WiFi version will launch “globally” in May, while an incoming 3G model (no LTE at this point, but it’ll be able to make calls) will follow in June.

Home Cleaning Service Teddle Raises £255K, Hailo Founder Ron Zeghibe Joins As Non-Exec Chairman
Dust off that cheque book. Teddle, the UK startup that lets you easily find and book a home cleaner, has closed a £255,000 (~$ 391k) funding round from a group of entrepreneurs-cum-angel investors, including Open Table founder David Pritchard.
In addition, the Springboard alumni has managed to persuade Hailo founder and chairman Ron Zeghibe to join as non-executive chairman, although I’m told he hasn’t invested, but (as we’d expect) is taking a small amount of equity.
LyX Joins the Google Summer of Code 2013
Hamburg writes “LyX joined this year’s Google Summer of Code (GSoC 2013) as a mentoring organization. The LaTeX based open-source GUI LyX has been accepted to the GSoC for the first time. With LyX one can start using LaTeX without being used to ‘program’ documents. So it’s an important entry point to the (La)TeX world, and a bridge between GUI word processors and LaTeX. This is a great opportunity for its development, now student developers can get financial support for contributing new features: successful contributions will earn a stipend of 5000 USD for the student and 500 USD for the organization, in this case the LyX project, who provides mentors to the students. There are already many project ideas, for example a GUI for editing layouts, a presentation mode, EPUB export, an outliner tool for intuitive writing, retina screen (HiDPI) support, and interactive concurrent editing. Would you like to take part, or do you have further ideas for improvements or features? Send your proposals to the lyx-devel mailing list, or simply comment here, what can be suggested to the LyX mentors.”

Lawdingo, The Startup That Lets You Talk To Lawyers Instantly, Joins Y Combinator
Lawdingo, a startup that connects users with lawyers for online consultations (sometimes instantly), is announcing that it’s part of the current class of startups at Y Combinator.
I last wrote about Lawdingo in November. You can browse lawyers on the site based on their expertise and location, and if you find one you like, you can schedule an appointment or in some cases hit the “talk now” button. The goal is to make finding a lawyer more convenient and more affordable. (On the affordability side, many of the lawyers on the site offer free consultations, and since you’re choosing from a broad geographic selection, you can probably find lower rates.)

Susan Desmond-Hellmann Joins Facebook’s Board, Adding Another Woman Alongside Sandberg
Facebook today added a new member to its board of directors, Susan Desmond-Hellman, M.D.. Dr. Hellman currently serves as the chancellor of the University of California, San Francisco. Prior to taking on the chancellorship at UCSF in 2009, Desmond-Hellman served as president of product development at biotech giant Genentech, where she worked for 14 years. Today, she also serves on the board of directors at Procter & Gamble. She completed her clinical training at UCSF and is board-certified in internal medicine and medical oncology; she holds a BS in pre-medicine and a medical degree from the University of Nevada, Reno, and a master’s in public health from the University of California, Berkeley. Desmond-Hellman is now the second woman on Facebook’s current board, alongside Facebook’s COO Sheryl Sandberg. She’s also the second board member from the high realms of academia, alongside University of North Carolina president emeritus Erskine Bowles. The timing of the announcement is likely coincidental, and of course Desmond-Hellman is not defined solely by her gender, but it’s a complementary news item on the same day that Sandberg’s non-profit ‘Lean In‘ organization has officially launched. Lean In is aimed at encouraging women to stay engaged and ambitious in their careers as they build their family lives. The remainder of Facebook’s board includes Mark Zuckerberg, Marc L. Andreessen, James W. Breyer, Donald E. Graham, Reed Hastings, and Peter A. Thiel. Here is the announcement: Facebook announced today that Susan Desmond-Hellmann , M.D., M.P.H., chancellor of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), has been elected to the company’s board of directors. “Sue has a great track record of building and managing a diverse set of organizations, so her insights will be valuable as we continue to expand into new areas,” said Mark Zuckerberg , founder and CEO of Facebook. “Her experience shaping public policy and operating public companies fits well with the rest of the board and will make us an even stronger company.” “I’ve always been drawn to organizations that do ground-breaking work,” said Desmond-Hellmann. “Facebook has an ambitious mission and long-term vision of innovation that is transforming how people connect with one another. I’m proud to be part of a company that is serving such an important purpose in the world.” As UCSF Chancellor, Desmond-Hellmann oversees all aspects of the university and medical center’s strategy and operations. She previously served as president, product development at the biotechnology pioneer,

TI joins the Alliance for Wireless Power, tells the WPC it can still be friends
It’s not quite a “Dear John” letter, but we’re sure the Wireless Power Consortium is heartbroken all the same. One of its key members, TI, has just signed up for the Alliance for Wireless Power to build cable-free charging on what’s effectively a competing standard. The chip designer doesn’t view the move as abandoning a long-time partner, though — it remains part of the WPC and plans to produce Qi-based wireless power chipsets alongside future A4WP components. Without any related chips to announce, there’s a long wait left before we know how well TI can juggle the two charging formats without appearing to play favorites. We’d recommend that the WPC not grow too attached in the meantime.

Acronym-loving Samsung joins Intel and TSMC, buys stake in ASML
Samsung’s round of cash-flashing continues with a $ 629 million purchase of a three-percent stake in AMSL. It’s joining Intel and TSMC in pumping money into the Dutch business, developing tooling for chip-making machines with Extra Ultraviolet Lithography (EUV) designed to “extend Moore’s Law.” It’ll also help reduce the cost of future silicon, since it’ll enable the companies to use wider silicon wafers along the manufacturing line. Given that Samsung’s investment caps of a project to raise nearly $ 5 billion in cash and that AMSL’s home is just five miles west of PSV Eindhoven’s stadium, we just hope they threw in a few home tickets for their trouble.

Pinterest Analytics Site PinReach Puts Itself Up For Sale As Co-Founder Joins Google
Well, it looks like the market for social media analytics has gotten a little less crowded, for now at least: the Pinterest analytics startup PinReach – which had originally been called PinClout until a cease & desist from Klout forced it to change its name – has just put itself up for sale on Flippa. Chris Fay, one of the co-founders, says that the reason for the sale is because he has accepted a position with Google, “and to avoid a conflict of interest my co-founder and I have decided to sell.” Included in the sale is the site’s technology “powering the aggregation and analysis of Pinterest data,” as well as the PinReach brand and domain.
Think Hiring Is Tough In The Valley? Now Europe Joins The Talent Wars
Despite some of the froth being blown off following the rocky Facebook IPO, it remains the case that talent and hiring are a big issue in the Valley. And you may not know this, but for a long time Europeans looked onward to the U.S. and thought to the themselves, “Ha! We have plenty of room left for growth! And plenty of talented, educated people! Mwah ha ha ha !” Ok, Ok, let’s leave aside that many of them wouldn’t themselves mind moving to the warm climes of Palo Alto and the rest… Instead, let’s concentrate on what actually happened next. What happened next was a good two, three of years of growth. And, we’ve seem the rise of some significant European originated companies such as Spotify, SoundCloud, Badoo, Fon, Moshi Monsters, Shazam, Wonga, Huddle and the list goes on.
But the honeymoon is definitely over. In the last few weeks and months I’ve been hearing plenty of tales of woe from European entrepreneurs having real problems finding the people they need. It looks suspiciously like the hiring wars have hit Europe, as they have the Valley.

Sprint Finally Joins 4G LTE Wireless Race
alphadogg writes “Sprint, which has been building up its LTE smartphone lineup this year, Monday finally turned on a 4G LTE network in 15 cities to support those devices. Sprint, which is entering the LTE network race well behind AT&T and Verizon, has initially launched 4G LTE in cities across Georgia, Texas, Missouri and Kansas. Sprint says it will add markets throughout the rest of 2012 and expects to have largely completed its 4G LTE build-out by the end of 2013 (along with enhanced 3G coverage) to address the wireless voice and data needs of 250 million people across the United States. Sprint has some major catching up to do on the 4G LTE network rollout front, though the fact that LTE adoption by customers has been slow at least gives the carrier a bit of breathing room. LTE network demand is expected to surge later this year, assuming Apple rolls out an iPhone 5 with LTE support.”
