Backed Or Whacked: iPads In Good Standing

Backed or Whacked first explored the murky underworld of iPad wearing devices last November. The GoPad saw its Kickstarter campaign whacked despite a temptation-inducing expository video. With a resounding harumph regarding Kickstarter’s unfriendliness toward sales-oriented projects, inventor Peter Kielland tried again on Indiegogo. Unfortunately, he also fell short there, collecting less than $ 1,000 of his $ 50,000 goal.

Refurbished 4th-gen iPads and iPad Minis hit the Apple Store

If you’ve been lusting after Apple’s latest tablet offerings but couldn’t muster the funds to snag one, you just might have your chance now. Seemingly a rite of passage for Apple products, the Cupertino company is now offering the iPad Mini and the 4th-gen iPad for slightly cheaper prices as refurbs. Depending on the model, they’re on sale for anywhere from six to ten percent off. For example, the 16GB 4th-gen iPad sans LTE is now $ 449 after a $ 50 discount, while an LTE-free 32GB Mini is $ 389 after a $ 40 discount. Not every single iteration is in stock at the moment — the base 16GB Mini isn’t listed, for instance — but we’re sure the inventory will be filled out soon enough. Have a peek at the source to see if you can score yourself a sweet deal on a bonafide Apple tablet that’s almost as good as new.

ipad-with-ipad-miniApple’s iPad led the charge as total worldwide tablet shipments hit a record of 52.5 million units in the fourth quarter of 2012, according to IDC’s preliminary data from its Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker, but its market share continued to slide due to competition from Samsung. Meanwhile, PC shipments declined during the quarter for the first time in more than five years. The tablet market grew 75.3% year-over-year, and increased 74.3% from the previous quarter’s total of 30.1 million units, helped along by holiday purchases, lower average selling prices and a wider range of products.

Apple online store lets Chinese buy on a 2-year plan, puts iPads within reach

iPad mini at Beijing's Wangfujing store

Apple has repeatedly stressed that China is important to its bottom line, but it faces a dilemma given the premium associated with its name: when it can take weeks’ worth of typical pay to buy an iOS device, let alone a Mac, many locals either have to save up or else turn to alternatives. The company may not have truly low-cost devices — at least, not yet — but it is offering an olive branch in the form of installment plans. Chinese who order from the online Apple Store with a China Merchants Bank credit card can now buy virtually anything priced between ¥300 and ¥30,000 ($ 48 to $ 4,821) using up to 24 payments spread over two years. Much like in other countries, there’s higher additional fees the longer the installments carry on. The strategy only helps a certain segment of the population for whom the up-front cost is the lone obstacle; that may be enough in the near future, though, given that there’s still significant demand.

The iMac In A World Of MacBooks On The Brink Of iPads

aModern Apple owes pretty much everything to the iMac. Yes, it was the iPod and later the iPhone and iPad that took the company to new, almost unimaginable heights. But as everyone knows, the company was at death’s door when Steve Jobs unveiled the “Bondi Blue” iMac in 1998. The iMac saved Apple, giving the company the time to do everything else that followed.

But as we enter 2013, the world is a much different place than 1998. Beyond the aforementioned iPods, iPhones, and iPads, in the “traditional” computing space, everyone seems to be using a laptop nowadays. In fact, something like three quarters of Apple’s Mac sales are now made up of their MacBook lines.

And yet, the iMac still exists.

American Airlines becomes first FAA-friendly carrier to use iPads through whole flights

American Airlines in taxi area

You don’t have to wait for an FAA rethink to use your iPad on an airliner below 10,000 feet — if you’re part of an American Airlines crew, that is. As of this month, the air carrier is the first cleared by the FAA to use iPads in the cockpit at every point during a flight. The program starts just with Boeing 777 pilots at first, but it should eventually grow to save $ 1.2 million in weight-related fuel costs per year across the airline, not to mention a few trees and the strain of 35-pound flight bags. American is confident enough in the tablet switchover that it plans to stop handing out any paper updates to its charts and manuals as of January, just days after its entire fleet gets the regulatory nod for iPads at the end of this year. We just wouldn’t anticipate Android or Windows tablet rollouts anytime soon. American isn’t opposed to the concept, but it’s only promising that slates beyond the iPad will be “evaluated for use” if and when the FAA applies its rubber stamp.

Condition One immerses iPads and iPhones in 180-degree video, shakes up dreary apps (video)

Condition One immerses iPads and iPhones in 180degree video, kicks off pilot with Mercedes and more

Video in tablet magazines and similar apps sometimes — okay, often — comes across as a grafted-on extra. Condition One, a startup by war photographer Danfung Dennis, wants to make video an intrinsic part of the experience by taking advantage of the motion sensors in smartphones and tablets. Video shot from a DSLR or similar camera is converted into a 180-degree format that you can swipe or tilt through on an iOS device to get a more involving look. It’s a lot more lively than plain movies, and Dennis sees the technique being used for documentaries and tours where it would help to put viewers directly in the action. Producers only need off-the-shelf hardware and software, too. There’s a show-off app at the source link to get an overall sense of what the footage is like, but if you’re looking for the first official projects, a pilot project has just started that’s bringing apps from Discovery, Mercedes-Benz, Popular Science (below), The Guardian and XL Recordings.

To 4G Or Not 4G? Apple Pulls “WiFi+4G” Branding For iPads

Screen Shot 2012-05-13 at 11.00.32 AMWhat is 4G? Many an armchair philosopher over the past few weeks has pondered this concept and now, thanks to a minor tempest caused by upset customers, Apple has changed their iPad branding from “WiFi+4G” to “WiFi+Cellular.”

Although the iPads were compatible with US 4G networks, the iPads didn’t work with international 4G connections, thereby dropping a few folks in Australia into a tizzy. To prevent this, Apple put the old moniker down the memory hole and replaced it with the new naming convention.
