Apple still faces Aussie iPad trial despite 4G rebrand

Apple’s decision to rebrand the new iPad as the “iPad WiFi + Cellular” and drop the allegedly confusing 4G reference will not save it from a court appearance with the Australian consumer rights watchdog. “Any move by Apple to cease using the descriptor of ’4G’ will mitigate against the ACCC’s concerns but will not deal

Apple Gives In, Drops iPad ’4G’ Tag To Avoid Lawsuits

Back in March, Apple was sued in Australia and criticized in Europe over its marketing of the iPad as supporting 4G speeds when it only did so in the U.S. and Canada. Now, reader TheGift73 writes with news that Apple has given in and changed the ‘Wi-Fi + 4G’ label to ‘Wi-Fi + Cellular.’ From the article:
“In the U.K., a number of complaints by customers pushed the ASA into acting against Apple for its misleading advertisements. The regulator had received ‘dozens of complaints’ from customers, and had pushed for Apple to remove any mentions of ’4G’ from its websites. It should come as little surprise considering Britain has yet to see its mobile networks divide up its 4G spectrum without bickering furiously about it. Some networks had even opted to avoid litigation directed at them by including stickers to inform potential buyers that the new iPad will not work on existing 4G networks, or even 4G networks that don’t even exist yet. This should come as bittersweet news for consumers. Apple has already sold millions of iPads across the U.K., Europe and Australia, while the vast majority are unaware that they will not be able to connect to high-speed mobile broadband networks.”

Apple’s iPad WiFi + 4G renamed ‘iPad WiFi + Cellular’ across many of its stores

Image

Remember Apple’s new iPad WiFi + 4G? Well, forget that moniker, as this variant of the company’s latest slate has been quietly re-dubbed as the iPad WiFi + Cellular. As noticed by 9to5Mac, the change occurred within the last “24-48 hours” across many of Apple’s region-specific webstores (update: and retail locations), including (but not limited to) those for the US, UK, Australia, Canada and various countries in Asia. If you’ll recall, in many regions the best you’ll get out of the slate is HSPA-connectivity, even though it’s also equipped for LTE — something that Apple itself had considered good enough to market it as 4G despite offering refunds to customers in Australia who (like many others) couldn’t officially partake in its LTE. Interestingly, 9to5Mac also notes that a similar change hasn’t made its way over to the iPad 2, which still has its cellular-equipped variant named, iPad 2 WiFi + 3G. We’ve reached out to Apple for comment, but the meantime, feel free to hit up the source links below for more insight.

What’s In A Name? Australia Wants Apple To ‘Change The Name’ Of The iPad Over 4G Incompatibility

ipad australia 4gLooks like we may see another development today in Apple’s ongoing iPad/4G controversy in Australia. The country’s Competition and Consumer Commission is meeting with Apple in court again today to try to get Apple to officially change the name of the device when it is sold in Australia.

Although many people know it as “the new iPad” since launching the product in March, Apple has also been marketing the product as the new iPad with ‘Wi-Fi +4G’ in the country. But Apple quickly ran into trouble when the ACCC said Apple was misleading consumers: in fact, the tablet is not actually compatible with Australia’s 4G network.

Since then, Apple has agreed to refund consumers who bought the device thinking they were getting 4G; and the company has also been putting up notices wherever the iPad is sold warning them that it didn’t work with Australia’s 4G. But the ACCC, it seems, does not think that this goes far enough.

Paper: the iPad sketchbook app from the brains of Courier (video)

Image

Go figure — Microsoft’s Courier project lives again… as an exclusive app on Apple’s iPad. FiftyThree, a company that features folks who previously worked on the aforesaid Courier initiative, has just put forth a monumental effort dubbed Paper. The app, which is available for free in the App Store, is a sophisticated sketchbook with a highly unique user interface that’s seemingly designed with the budding artist in mind. Put simply, the company feels that this app is “where ideas begin,” enabling users to capture mental light bulbs as sketches, diagrams, illustrations, notes or drawings before sharing them across the web.

Of course, “free” only gets you in the door; in-app purchases ($ 2 per brush, for example) keeps the creators in business, but it’s unclear at this point if a paid edition will be offered for those who aren’t much on cherry-picking what they do and don’t want to pony up for. Not surprisingly, the app ships with native support for the new iPad’s Retina display, and while fingers are welcome, a capacitive stylus is recommended. Eager to see more? Peek the video just after the break, and get your download on in the source link.
