LucasArts Employees Hold Wake & Eulogy; Vader Still Roams
Dawn Kawamoto writes “LucasArts employees held a wake Friday night, days after Darth Vader Disney slayed their studio. Taking the high road, two LucasArts employees put together a eulogy that offers a retrospective on the culture, memories and accomplishments of the team. Most of us who’ve witnessed a blood bath at the workplace aren’t as charitable. Darth Vader Disney is expected to strike again in the next two weeks at its studio and consumer product divisions.”

Hold The Phone, I Want My Dick Tracy Watch
A few days ago, I read Nilay Patel’s review of the Pebble smartwatch for The Verge. Like many others, I bought a Pebble on Kickstarter, and I can’t wait to try it out myself. But one part of Patel’s review stuck out at me in particular:
Any incoming notification will quietly buzz the Pebble and light up the screen. Frankly, it’s great — being able to see who’s texting, emailing, or calling you without looking at your phone changes the entire dynamic of being connected. The upside is obvious: only reaching for your phone when it’s something important means you reach for your phone much less often. (I particularly enjoy screening calls from my wrist.)
Panda Blood May Hold Potent Assailant Against Superbugs
An anonymous reader writes “Pandas have long been the face of conservation efforts by environmental activists, but a recent finding may boost even further the need for pandas to evade extinction. Researchers have discovered a powerful antibody in panda blood that could serve as the next frontier in the fight against increasingly prevalent superbugs. The compound is called cathelicin-AM. Discovered when researchers analyzed the creatures’ DNA, it has been found to kill fungus and bacteria. It is believed that the antibiotic is released to protect the animal from infections in the wild and, in studies, it has been found to kill both standard and drug-resistant strains of microbes and fungi. The compound also worked extremely quickly, killing off strains of bacteria in just an hour, while conventional antibiotics needed six.”

HP plans to hold off on building ARM-based Windows tablets, focus on x86 instead
Whether it’s put off by Microsoft’s own push into tablets with Surface or just taking a wait-and-see approach, HP has now confirmed that it won’t be among those offering ARM-based Windows 8 (or RT) hardware when the OS makes its long-awaited debut later this year. That possibility was first reported by SemiAccurate earlier today and has now been backed up by Bloomberg, which has the official word straight from HP spokesperson Marlene Somsak. She noted that HP will instead be focusing solely on x86-based devices, a decision that she says was “influenced by input from our customers,” adding that the “robust and established ecosystem of x86 applications provides the best customer experience at this time and in the immediate future.” What’s more, Somsak went on to say that HP’s first Windows 8 tablet will focus on the business market, which certainly lines up with the leaked device pictured above that surfaced a few months back.

Military hunting smartphone safety to hold off enemy bugs, spooks
Ah, smartphones — the delightful little slates carry our contacts, our content — even our cash, and they still fit right in our pockets. No surprise then, that a lost or stolen phone can be a minor disaster — or a major security risk (just ask the President). Now that soldiers are packing them to send GPS coordinates or situational images in the field — on top of using them at home — DARPA has enlisted security company Invincea to fortify the devices. Its first effort, encrypting OS files and filling the memory of a lost phone with worthless data, has already been deployed to 3,000 troops in Afghanistan. Its next target is to cloister apps into virtual rooms within the OS, locking off access to sensitive parts of the phone like its GPS or contact lists. That would keep any nasty bits of malware from potentially gaining root privileges so soldiers can fight, and Facebook, without compromise.

Hold The Phone — How The Future Of Web Advertising Is Linked To The Call
We’re all now familiar with how adwords campaigns on Google work. You buy keywords commonly used in search terms, such as “plumber in X town”, and send people to a response mechanism, usually a web site. But increasingly that response mechanism is not a just a web site but a phone number as well – sometimes it’s even just a phone number. But these days it’s rarely an ordinary number – it’s usually a ‘smart number’ that performs certain kinds of actions and sends data, just like browser calls a web page and sends data from that page. These smart numbers can be made to grab an RSS feed, play a sound file, make the caller fill out a form with their voice – just about anything.
Increasingly we are seeing tech startups address what you do with that phone call and the data and analytics that can be pulled from it, just like on the Web.
While Google and Facebook look at this area with their pet own projects, startups have appeared on the market to address this, such as AdInsight, Tropo, Twilio and Iovox, among others.

Reusable Sticky Tape Could Hold Up Your TV
Large patches of an extremely strong new adhesive, inspired by geckos, can be used over and over again.
For years scientists have tried to make strong, reusable adhesives by mimicking the microscopic hair-like structures on gecko toes that give the lizard its climbing ability. But those structures are hard to make, limiting the adhesives’ size to a few centimeters. Now researchers from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, have come up with a different gecko-inspired structure that works even better. They have created a reusable adhesive fabric that can be easily and cheaply made tens of centimeters wide and is three times stronger than gecko feet.

Report: Apple to hold media event on October 4th, Tim Cook to unveil iPhone 5
We have yet to receive official word on this, but All Things Digital is reporting today that Apple’s next big media event will be held on October 4th, where freshly minted CEO Tim Cook is expected to unveil the iPhone 5. Sources close to the situation say Cook will be the main presenter at the event, with execs Phil Schiller, Scott Forstall and Eddy Cue playing supporting roles. This would mark the first time that Cook has actually led an Apple event, adding an extra wrinkle of significance to an already highly anticipated occasion. The site’s sources went on to say that the next-gen iPhone will be available for purchase “within a few weeks” of the announcement, though All Things Digital acknowledges that the exact date of its unveiling is still subject to change. As always, we’ll be sure to keep you posted as soon as we hear more.
