With Profitable Operations And 100K Stores On Its Platform, Retail Tech Startup Erply Shifts Into High Gear
Erply, the company that makes cloud-based and iPad-centric point of sale and inventory management software for retailers, is up against big competition: Microsoft, Oracle, and RetailPro are just some of the behemoths in the same space. But three years after its US debut, Erply tells us it is still in the game and seeing encouraging growth — and has hit some new milestones that show its progress.
The New York City-based Erply now has 100,000 stores on its platform, with customers including names such as Elizabeth Arden Retail, The Athletes Foot, and UNICEF, co-founder and CEO Kristian Hiiemaa told me in an interview today. The company has grown its staff from four full-timers to 40, split between New York City and Estonia. While 70 percent of its customer base is in the US, Erply’s client reach is spread worldwide across 15 countries.
Tesla Motors Loses Appeal Against BBC’s Top Gear
TrueSatan writes “In a highly detailed decision, the UK Court of Appeal has rejected Tesla’s appeal against an eartlier ruling by a lower court that, too, rejected Tesla’s case. Reading through the decision it is clear that the judge saw Tesla’s case as lacking sufficient detail and specific instances of proof to support each claim. The judge stated that that Tesla’s chances of a successful appeal, should the case have gone to trial, were insufficiently high to justify holding a trial. He stated that Tesla’s case had no real chance of success and in many notes picked appart Tesla’s legal team’s arguments. That said, he did not say that Top Gear were right or justified in portraying Tesla’s vehicle in the way they did — merely that there wasn’t a legal case for an appeal. One of the key flaws in Tesla’s case, according to the judicial decision, was Tesla’s inability to show that actual pecuniary harm, with detailed financial figures, had occurred.”

NAMM 2013 wrap-up: Analog synths, DJ gear, loads of MIDI, mobile peripherals and more
We’ve managed to pull through music’s deafening January gathering just outside of Los Angeles with our hearing still somewhat intact. The last few days have held a wealth of DJ gear from controllers and consoles to portable units. Both Moog and Korg trotted out new analog synthesizers that look quite formidable while remaining rather affordable. As expected, a truckload of wares to outfit a mobile device arsenal were on display from Bluetooth foot controllers to dual-input audio interfaces. And as always, a few surprises crept in as well — like a MIDI guitar and fully portable, handheld DJ solution. Head on down past the break to get caught up on the happenings that you might’ve missed as we look for a nice quiet room to recover for a few hours.

Ask Slashdot: Why Does Wireless Gear Degrade Over Time?
acer123 writes “Lately I have replaced several home wireless routers because the signal strength has been found to be degraded. These devices, when new (2+ years ago) would cover an entire house. Over the years, the strength seems to decrease to a point where it might only cover one or two rooms. Of the three that I have replaced for friends, I have not found a common brand, age, etc. It just seems that after time, the signal strength decreases. I know that routers are cheap and easy to replace but I’m curious what actually causes this. I would have assumed that the components would either work or not work; we would either have a full signal or have no signal. I am not an electrical engineer and I can’t find the answer online so I’m reaching out to you. Can someone explain how a transmitter can slowly go bad?”

OLED Lego train station emerges from Adafruit and Arduino gear, minifigs to get home on time
Who knew Lego characters had to be somewhere in a hurry? Adafruit did, as it just whipped up a minifig-sized train schedule. The invention mates one of Adafruit’s own 1-inch OLED boards with an Arduino Uno controlling the schedule behind the scenes. It looks to be a straightforward project for the DIY types, although the display is currently all show: the schedule doesn’t (yet) pair up with the train tracks to automatically let your minifigs know if their trip to the pirate spaceship castle has been delayed by ghosts. You can check the source link for the full instructions. Duplo builders, alas, are kept out of the loop.

Conductive fabrics may power future infantry gear, uniforms set to enter field trials
If you thought your Sunbeam electric blanket or those Hello Kitty foot warmers were advanced pieces of kit, then you’d best divert your eyes from this story out of the UK. In an effort to eliminate the mess of power cables and extraneous batteries from a soldier’s tech gear, one British company is currently experimenting with conductive fabrics as the basis for future military uniforms. The material is able to deliver power to any number of devices — all from a single battery — and also features a redundancy aspect, with the ability to reroute power should the fabric become torn or damaged. The company, known as Intelligent Textiles, recently received a £234,000 grant from the Ministry of Defense and hopes to begin field trials of its equipment next month. While these high tech uniforms may see a limited military issue by year’s end, it’s thought unlikely that the gear will become widespread until 2014 or beyond.

Google, Amazon, Microsoft Go East For Network Gear
theodp writes “Wired’s Cade Metz has the scoop on the move away from U.S. network equipment stalwarts, calling it of the best-kept secrets in Silicon Valley. ‘Cloud computing is an arms race,’ writes Metz. ‘The biggest web companies on earth are competing to see who can deliver their services to the most people in the shortest amount of time at the lowest cost. And the cheapest arms come straight from Asia.’ Or, as Joyent’s Howard Wu puts it, ‘It’s kind of like buying couches. If you buy one, you go to a retail store. If you buy 10,000 couches, you go straight to the factory.’”

Switched On: Assets in gear
Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.
Ecosystems take years to build and depend on other companies. Really, who has the time these days? Plus, they kick in only if a product reaches critical mass. Microsoft and SanDisk demonstrated the risk a few years back with their digital media players in seeding the market with third-party cases and docks using their own proprietary and now abandoned connectors. Over the past year, though, we’ve seen a number of tech companies take a new approach to mobile product development — the corporate showcase — where they convincingly shun any notion of silos by throwing just about everything they’ve got into a product.
