Gartner: PC sales continue to slide as tablets eat their lunch

Gartner PC sales continue slide, tablets to blame

PC shipments are still heading the wrong way down the gadget freeway, according to Gartner, who thinks that we’re now consuming media mostly on tablets and just flitting over to the PC for grunt work. The survey outfit theorized that a single shared computer can often suffice for a family, with individuals getting their own tablet instead of a laptop or desktop for personal stuff — especially with compelling, inexpensive new entries like the Nexus 7. Gift-givers were less inclined to wrap up PCs this Christmas, and Windows 8 didn’t give them much of a boost either, according to the figures. The only companies with anything to celebrate during the period were Lenovo and Asus, who experienced 8.2 and 6.4 percent boosts respectively, reflecting another trend that competitors like HP and Dell will want to nip in the bud — and fast.

Gartner Buzzword Tracker Says “Cloud Computing” Still on Hype Wave

If you’re sick of the term “cloud” to refer to pretty much anything on “the internet” and consider that phrase a symptom of useless MBA, PHB, PowerPoint talking points oozing where they don’t belong, sorry — you’ll probably have to endure it for a while yet. Nerval’s Lobster writes that Gartner’s 2012 Hype Cycle of Emerging Technologies says that “Cloud computing” (along with a few other terms, such as “Near Field Communication” and “media tablets”) is not just alive but growing.

“Gartner uses the report to monitor the rise, maturity and decline of certain terms and concepts, the better for corporate strategists and planners to predict how things will trend over the next few months or years. As part of the report, Gartner’s analysts have built a Hype Cycle which positions technologies on a graph tracing their rise, overexposure, inevitable fall, and eventual rehabilitation as quiet, productive, well-integrated, thoroughly un-buzz-worthy technologies. Right now, Gartner views hybrid cloud computing, Big Data, crowdsourcing, and the ‘Internet of Things’ as on the rise, while private cloud computing, social analytics and the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) phenomenon are coasting at the Peak of Inflated Expectations.”

Social Media Revenues To Reach $16.9B In 2012; Ads Remain Leading Driver At $8.8B, Predicts Gartner

facebook-money-360For those of you who get frustrated with the idea that in many social networks, you are not just a user but also a product, prepare to grit your teeth a bit more: a new forecast out from Gartner notes that advertising will remain the main way that social media services make money. The analysts predict that this year social media revenue will generate $ 16.9 billion in revenues, with more than half of that, $ 8.8 billion, to come from advertising. The estimates are coming out on the same day that social gaming giant Zynga is reporting earnings, and days before Facebook posts its results.

That $ 16.9 billion figure represents a rise of 43 percent over last year, when social media services like Facebook, Spotify, Twitter and more generated $ 11.8 billion in revenues. While sales will continue to grow at fast clip, however, Gartner notes that the user base of social media services, now numbering at over one billion users, will only grow at a “moderate pace.”

Gartner: Enterprise IT Spend Will Pass $3.6 Trillion In 2012, Cloud Investments Rise To $109B

Bowl of clouds | Flickr - Photo Sharing!Gartner has updated its forecasts on IT spend worldwide: spend in areas like hardware, software, and IT services are going to drive total investment of $ 3.6 trillion into IT overall. Gartner calls that number “lackluster,” in that it’s only slightly higher than Gartner projected last month, and only three percent more than 2011′s $ 3.5 trillion figure. However, what’s noticeable is that we are continuing to see a strong appetite for cloud computing. It will reach $ 109 billion in 2012 and will almost double in value by 2016 to $ 209 billion.

The survey canvases activity from over 75 percent of Gartner’s Global 500 list of top companies, and the analysts say that factors that are hemming in growth include the eurozone crisis, a slowdown in China and a weaker-than-expected recovery in the U.S. — all ongoing issues for the world economy. ”There has been little change in either business confidence or consumer sentiment in the past quarter, so the short-term outlook is for continued caution in IT spending,” notes Richard Gordon, research vice president at Gartner, in the report.

Gartner: Over $172B In Mobile Payments In 2012; SMS, Web Most Popular Routes

mobile paymentNo, NFC still hasn’t come to the iPhone — or many other devices, for that matter. But this does not appear to be stopping the momentum in the world of mobile payments. Research out today from Gartner says that this year will see more than $ 171.5 billion in mobile payment transactions — a rise of over 60 percent on 2011′s $ 105.9 billion — with 212.2 million people (up 32 percent from 160.5m in 2011) using some form of mobile payment service. And what’s fuelling the rise? Despite the rise of smartphones, it’s legacy-based services like SMS and web-based transactions.

Longer term, Gartner believes that transactions will reach a volume of $ 617 billion by 2016 — with average growth slightly slowing down to around 42 percent — with 448 million users using such services.

Gartner: mobile phone sales fell two percent last quarter, Samsung confirmed as numero uno

Gartner: mobile phone sales fell two percent last quarter, Samsung confirmed as numero uno

Gartner’s latest dispatch reveals a wobbly global trade in mobile phones. Although our love of smartphones continued to blossom, with sales of that subcategory up nearly 45 percent, it wasn’t enough to stave off a two percent overall decline compared to the same quarter in 2011. A total of 419.1 million handsets were sold, representing the first hiccup after nearly three years of growth and leading analysts to point fingers at a slow down in the Asia / Pacific region as well as a lack of product launches at the start of the year. Meanwhile, these figures also confirm what was already gleaned from IDC’s shipments data: Samsung has knocked Nokia off its 14-year-old perch to become the padrone of the mobile phone market, with a cut of over 20 percent. It also replaced Apple as the number one smartphone vendor, claiming ownership of almost half of that segment. Damn, it feels good to be a pebble.

Post PC Indeed: Gartner Says 2012 PC Shipments Will Only Grow 4.4% To 368M Units

old computerAt yesterday’s Apple event, CEO Tim Cook ran through some big numbers that underscored just how strongly the iPad is pacing against PCs when it comes to consumer interest. Today, Gartner released some forecasts that underscore how that story is not set to change any time soon.

The analysts say that PC shipments are on track to grow by just 4.4 percent in 2012 — to 368 million units, as consumers continue to prioritize purchases of new tablets, and smartphones, ahead of buying new laptop or desktop computers. But at least this is a slight improvement on 2011, when Gartner said that shipments were essentially flat on 2010.
