Computer scientists have developed an algorithm that uses the structure of a social network to find the best strategy for friending people you don’t know.

It’s almost become a truism that internet connections from the Asia-Pacific region to the rest of the world can be slow and lag-ridden, but that assumption is about to be knocked flat if Facebook and others in a Time Dotcom-led consortium have their way. The alliance is investing a combined $ 450 million into the Asia Pacific Gateway, a 6,214-mile undersea cable that will run between Japan, Malaysia and South Korea. The fiber optic pipe will not only help reduce the need to route large volumes of traffic through Singapore but, in many cases, send much of that traffic straight to American shores — a big help when Facebook and much of the web industry still hosts most of its content on the Eastern side of the ocean. Although faster speeds won’t be in place until the summer of 2014, by which point the more direct connections might be absolutely necessary, it still gives hope to those of us who want to poke friends and upload photos in record time.

Pretty much the only place you see vacuum tubes any more is inside a quality audio amp. But, once upon a time, they were the primary ingredient in any piece of electronic equipment, including computers. The glass tubes have since been replaced with the smaller, less fragile and cheaper to manufacture silicon transistor. There are, however, disadvantages, to transistors. For one, electrons tend to move more slowly though the semiconductors, and two, they’re highly susceptible to radiation. The second of those problems doesn’t affect us much here on Earth, but for NASA it poses a major obstacle. Engineers have finally managed to combine the advantages of both vacuum tubes and silicon transistors, though, in what has been dubbed “nano vacuum tubes.” They’re created by etching tiny cavities in phosphorous-doped silicon, bordered on three sides by electrodes that form the gate, source and drain. The term “vacuum tube” is slightly misleading however, since there is no true vacuum in play. Instead, the source and drain are separated by just 150 nanometers, making it highly unlikely that flowing electrons would run into stray atoms. In addition to their space-worthy hardiness, they can also potentially operate at frequencies ten-times as higher than silicon transistors, making them a candidate to push terahertz tech from experimental to mainstream. Microsoft and Apple should hate one another right now. I mean, really hate each other. After decades of domination, Microsoft has watched their rival move from death’s door to become the most valuable company in the world — over $ 200 billion more valuable than Microsoft itself. And it was Microsoft who helped get Apple there, remember, with a timely cash infusion in 1997.
Steve Ballmer laughed off the iPhone, which eventually helped kill off Windows Mobile — and it’s now bigger than all of Microsoft’s businesses combined. And the company shrugged off the iPad, even as it established a category, tablets, which Microsoft itself had been trying to establish for years.

When it comes to gift-giving, there are a few presents that siimply go above and beyond. Getting a first car on your sixteenth birthday (if you’re so lucky) is one of those moments, and some young couples are even lucky enough to get a house as a wedding present. But after a house and a car, a brand new laptop is probably the best gift you can get. We’ve compiled a list of notebooks ranging in price from $ 839 to starting points of $ 1,999, so there should be something here for everyone.
Without any further ado, here are some of our reccomendations if you’re looking to get your loved one a new notebook.

While Logitech’s CEO says Google TV “cost us dearly,” LG plans to jump on board with the search giant’s Internet-connected TV service.
Google TV’s next iteration—a software update making it more navigable, pretty, and generally user-friendly—has rolled out, and is getting rave reviews. “For current Google TV users, the update is nothing but good news,” says MediaBeat’s Devindra Hardawar, who’s been test-driving it for weeks. Hardawar cautions, though, that it probably doesn’t make sense to buy a Google TV device right away; the latest update was only a software update, and new hardware is expected on the horizon.
Research suggests news aggregators like Google drive more traffic to local sites—but not their home pages.
Google has long been a favorite scapegoat of the troubled news industry. Media mogul Rupert Murdoch famously accused the search titan of stealing from media outlets by drawing users to its aggregation service, Google News, and away from those sites’ home pages. New sites often dismiss Google’s claims that it helps them by driving traffic to their articles.
Computer Choppers’ latest luxury overhaul is about as Cribs-worthy a laptop as we’ve ever laid our hard-working eyes on. Just like this 24-carat stunner before it, the shiny setup gives something a little extra to that Apple logo, by way of Marilyn’s favorite gems, but sets itself apart with the addition of a rather unexciting paisley pattern. If you’re the type who flushes hundos, though, you can ditch the paisleys for your very own custom design. As is often the case with these things, the price isn’t listed, but frankly, we’d hold out until they replace those black plastic chiclets with something fit for the Diamond Princess.

reddit: the front page of the internet
For a first post on Reddit, this one sure isn’t going to be the peppiest.
Back in Texas, in 2002, my friend Steven from Michigan was convincted of the murder of a couple, along with another guy who wound up getting life with parole because he confessed to the crime. Steven, on the other hand, proclaimed his innocence from the start. Being a travelling punk out on the street, he didn’t have the funds to get a decent lawyer, and he was sentenced to death. 3 months later, Marcus Rhodes admitted in a court room that he alone had shot and killed both victims.
This is a very long and complicated story. I urge everyone to take the time to read it. But because the Internet is filled with the most amazing things in the world, I’m going to link to the website that was created for him (I’m not the only nutcase to believe the guy!)
The state of Texas has not agreed to a retrial, though in the years he spent in isolation, he has gathered up enough evidence to be taken seriously. There has been an average of 5 exonerations a year in the last decade. These are people that would have been put to death if they had stopped fighting and accepted their unjust fate.
I have been staring at a blank page for days now. I don’t know what to tell him. He is a brilliant man who only got to live until he was 21. I’ve been getting very emotional about this. I have typed this story many times without being able to post it here because I would get overwhelmed and terrified.
They’re going to kill my friend. What do I tell him?
EDIT: I’m a She, not a He.
