AMD Tweaking Radeon Drivers To Reduce Frame Latency Spikes

crookedvulture writes “Slashdot has previously covered The Tech Report’s exposure of frame latency issues with recent AMD graphics processors. Both desktop and notebook Radeons exhibit frame latency spikes that interrupt the smoothness of in-game animation but don’t show up in the FPS averages typically used to benchmark performance. AMD has been looking into the problem and may have discovered the culprit. The Graphics Core Next architecture underpinning recent Radeons is quite different from previous designs, and AMD has been rewriting the memory management portion of its driver to properly take advantage. This new code improves frame latencies, according to AMD’s David Baumann, and the firm has accelerated the process of rolling it into the official Catalyst drivers available to end users. Radeon owners can take some comfort in the fact that a driver update may soon alleviate the frame latency problems associated with AMD’s latest GPUs. However, they might also be disappointed that it’s taken AMD this long to optimize its drivers for the now year-old GCN architecture.”

The iPhone 5′s Camera Is Faulty, Shows Purple Haze When Light Source Is Just Out Of Frame

photo1We’ve just learned that the iPhone 5 camera may be faulty, showing a purple haze (yep, I said it) in certain lighting conditions. If you take a picture with the iPhone 5, and there’s a bright light that’s outside of the frame, you’ll see a purple tint come across the image.

This is possibly due to the Sapphire glass used in the camera’s lens. As we all know, Sapphire is a purple/bluish gem, and though the purple tint isn’t noticeable without that bright glare from an off-screen light, it can really fudge up some pictures if the conditions aren’t just right. The phone is smart enough, however, to compensate in certain situations.

Ever wished you had another option aside from using Instagram’s mobile apps and permalinks for viewing your retrofied photos? The folks at D2M certainly did, resulting in what it likes to call Instacube. The square gizmo is essentially a 7.5-inch (2.5 inches deep), OneStep-themed digital photo frame purposed specifically for displaying and interacting with Instagram photo feeds. Up front, a 6.5-inch LCD touchscreen (600 x 600 resolution, the full resolution of photos on the service) allows you to tap between pictures and type when needed. Apart from that, three physical buttons on its top handle power, switching feeds and favoriting photos. Basically, the unit looks out for your specified hashtags so it can follow multiple Instagram feeds and automatically cycle through the images. Android runs the show (no word on what version) atop an undisclosed ARM processor that’s bundled with 4GB of storage and 256MB of RAM, while b/g/n WiFi keeps it connected to Instagram independently. Speaking to its OS, tinkerers should be pleased to know that D2M plans to continually enhance its functionality, and potentially open it up to developers. Also worth note, Instacube sports a built-in rechargeable battery, allowing you have it operate completely untethered when the mood strikes.

Interested in pledging your own coin to help fund the project? 1,000 backers can get in on their own Instacube for a cool $ 99, after which it’ll jump to $ 150. Another 1,000 can get a duo for $ 199, and the same goes for a limited edition “vintage spring” green variant that’ll set you back $ 249 a piece. Past that, bulk options are on offer maxing out at $ 5,000 for 40 units, and $ 10,000 for 25 and a “Design Experience” with D2M. All in all, the Instacube project has 31 days to reach a $ 250,000 funding goal, with the first units set to ship in March 2013 if all goes well — hopefully we’ll see more than just renders of it well before then. Microsoft patent application details branded web browser frame

Originally filed in the halcyon days of 2010, the United States Patent and Trademark Office has just published a web browser-centric patent application from the fine folks in Redmond. Microsoft‘s “Branded Browser Frame” app details a “computer-readable storage media” that can be specifically executed (presumably by surfing over to a website that’s capable of handling said execution), and then used to present a varying interface based on what the underlying instructions are telling it to do. According to the independent claims put forth, we’re told about a “control layout area… wherein one of the selected controls comprises a website-branded control that serves as a website’s homepage button, and a navigation control that provides an input field.”

In lay terms, that sounds a lot like a browser function that would enable many of the typical graphical elements we see atop our URL bars today to be adjusted and dynamically tweaked based on inputs from whatever address it was currently on. We aren’t putting words in the applicant’s mouth, but we’re envisioning a top bar in Internet Explorer that turns red and features DVDs as the forward and back buttons when surfing over to Netflix.com (perhaps a stretch, but you catch the drift). IE9 does a bit of that color changing today, but it’s possible that more is in store. Naturally, it’ll take some time to see if this here app is actually granted, and it’s possible that it’ll look / function quite differently in its final form, but there’s no doubt that someone at Microsoft is dreaming about a sexier (if not more sellable) browser bar.

It’s faster and better in just about every way, and few of you will be lucky enough to use one, since it goes for just under seven grand. Facelock app hits the Ovi Store, Symbian handsets frame your face for security

Unlocking your phone doesn’t get any easier than a simple patterned swipe or pre-set pin. But for the fussy amongst you, there’s an alternative solution to make you feel both confidently futuristic, and downright ridiculous. Facelock, the facial recognition security app announced back at Nokia World 2010, has finally mosied on over to the Ovi Store, beta tag in tow. The screen lock tech functions pretty much as you’d expect: once you’ve set a static image of your face as a code, the front-facing camera will then match it up to your mug and, presto magico, you’ll have access to your device. The free app is apparently compatible only with Symbian 3 handsets, although those rocking Anna and Belle shouldn’t encounter any difficulties. Ready to face / off with your phone?
