Fishermen falling for new bass species hook, line and sinker
Coastal river systems in Alabama and the western Florida panhandle are home to the newest member of the black basses: the Choctaw bass, Micropterus haiaka. For decades, biologists and anglers alike confused this species with one of its relatives, the spotted bass. But at least national fishing organization told FoxNews.com that the Choctaw bass will now likely be a top target for catch-and-release fishermen in the southeastern United States.

People Are Speaking, Markets Are Reacting, Fears Are Falling And Hackers Are Gonna Hack!
Editor’s note: Howard Lindzon is co-founder and CEO of StockTwits, a social network for traders and investors to share real-time ideas and information.
The markets are not changing so much as the technology that makes markets move. The technology has enabled machines to ping each other at speeds that give them an edge over humans (at least in the very short-term) and people are connected to other machines and people in ways that can’t be quantified. The social web and the leverage from these connections have the media confused, and it seems angry, if not completely wrong.

Falling Windows RT Tablet Prices Signify Slow Adoption
angry tapir writes “Prices of Windows RT devices have started falling, signaling an attempt by PC makers to quickly clear out stock after poor adoption of tablets and convertibles with the operating system. Microsoft released Windows RT for ARM-based devices and Windows 8 for Intel-based devices in October last year. The price drop is an acknowledgment that Windows RT has failed, analysts claim. Though Microsoft has not publicly acknowledged the failure of Windows RT, there is already growing concern about the fate of the OS. IDC earlier this month said that Windows RT tablet shipments have been poor, and that consumers have not bought into ‘Windows RT’s value proposition.’ PC and chip makers have acknowledged poor adoption of the operating system. Nvidia’s CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang, last month said he was disappointed with the poor response to Windows RT, and Acer executives have said that Microsoft needs to improve the usability of RT.”

Vertu’s first Android smartphone costs €7,900, admits to falling short of ‘bleeding edge’
That fancy Vertu Ti handset we saw pop up last month? It’s finally been priced, predictably out of the average buyer’s price range. Sticker shock starts at €7,900, or about $ 10,587, and buys eccentrics with money to burn a sapphire-covered 800 x 480 display, 1.5GHz of processing power and a 1,250mAh battery — all wrapped in a durable titanium shell. What’s it missing? 4G connectivity, unfortunately. “Vertu will never be at the bleeding edge of technology,” Vertu head of design Hutch Hutchison told the BBC. “It has to be about relevant technology and craftsmanship — it’s not a disposable product.” At those prices, we’d certainly hope not. Vertu phones might not be packed with the mobile world’s latest tech, but Hutchison says that the top dollar pricetag buys better durability. “People think sapphire is just posh glass,” he explained to the BBC. “The only thing that scratches it is a diamond.” At the very least, Vertu customers won’t have to worry about which pocket they keep their keys in.

Why Ultrabooks Are Falling Well Short of Intel’s Targets
nk497 writes “When Paul Otellini announced Ultrabooks last year, he predicted they would grab 40% of the laptop market by this year. One analyst firm has said Ultrabooks will only make up 5% of the market this year, slashing its own sales predictions from 22m this year to 10.3m. However, IHS iSuppli said that Ultrabooks have a chance at success if manufacturers get prices down between $ 600 to $ 700 — a discount of as much as $ 400 on the average selling price of the devices — and they could still grab a third of the laptop market by 2016.”

Melting Point For ICS? Its Share Of Android Penetration Is Growing While Others Falling
Google has released its latest Android developer stats, which show that Gingerbread, version 2.3, at 63.6 percent, remains the single most-popular Android version, based on how many devices have accesed the Google Play app store in the last two weeks. But some number crunching, courtesy of Ben Evans, shows that the newer Ice Cream Sandwich may be picking up some speed.
Google says that ICS accounted the last two weeks, for 10.7 percent of all Google play visits. But Evans’ calculations indicate that in that time there were actually more ICS than Gingerbread devices added to the overall base — for the first time. In fact, it looks like ICS devices are actually growing in their overall percentage of all active Android devices, while all other versions are seeing declines.

VMware, a Falling Giant?
New submitter Lashat writes “According to Ars Technica, ‘A new survey seems to show that VMware’s iron grip on the enterprise virtualization market is loosening, with 38 percent of businesses planning to switch vendors within the next year due to licensing models and the robustness of competing hypervisors.’ What do IT-savvy Slashdotters have to say about moving away from one of the more stable and feature rich VM architectures available?”

SatelliteAR Android app now tracks falling UARS, helps you avoid being smooshed
You may have a better chance of winning the lottery or running into Captain Kirk at the mall, but when it comes to being impaled with pieces of the now defunct Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite as it plummets towards Earth, it’s better to be safe than sorry. The SatelliteAR Android app has added a temporary feature that gives stargazers the ability to monitor this space junk’s trajectory to avoid impact when it re-enters the atmosphere sometime later today. NASA has assured us that the bus-sized satellite won’t land anywhere in North America, but if it touches down at night, people on the ground could witness a pretty sweet light show wherever it does land. Android users determined to avoid a Wicked Witch of the East-like fate can download the app at the source link below and check out the video demo after the break.
