Google kicks off 2013 Science Fair, seeks projects to change the world
LinkedIn Competitor XING Buys Glassdoor-like Startup Kununu For $12.3M, But Will It Fair Well?
The German market for startups never ceases to amaze me. While many European startups struggle with either internal markets that are too small or international markets that are pretty daunting, the German eco-system rattles along pretty well, given that with Germany, Austria and Switzerland you have a potential market of about 100 million German-speaking consumers. Thus it is that a small startup like kununu – a German-based equivalent of Glassdoor, the employer reviewing service – can exit relatively easily to a larger player like XING, a LinkedIn-like company that managed to float on the German exchange some years ago. The acquision is for up to €9.4 million ($ 12.3 million). At 3 million page impressions per month, kununu is not exactly that big – but crucially, it’s big in the German market. XING is paying out €3.6 million, with an additional sweetener of €5.8 million based on performance to 2015. Founders Martin and Mark Poreda and all 30 staff are staying on.

Australia To Review Copyright Fair Use
New submitter freddienumber13 writes “The Australian Government has announced a review of the copyright act to look at the provisions of fair use and exceptions with a view towards considering whether or not the law has kept pace with technology and thus if further provisions are required to ensure the act remains relevant and effective.”
Don’t hold your breath; the committee has until November 30th, 2013 to create their report. Maybe Australians will see their Fair Use rights expanded in a time when it’s in fashion to expand copyright protections.

New York’s Chinatown Fair arcade presses start to continue
Live in New York? Miss the familiar sound of a quarter dropping into an arcade slot? If so, then news that the Chinatown Fair arcade could be re-opening will definitely give you a power-up. It turns out that film maker Kurt Vincent headed down to the disused locale to shoot its vacant halls, only to bump into the new shuffling in some new games. Sadly there’s sparse little other info about how or when we might see the flicker of screens lighting up the walls once more, but at least you can beat that OutRun top score in safety.

Apple-Approved Fair Labor Inspections Begin At Foxconn
redletterdave writes “Apple announced on Monday that the Fair Labor Association has begun inspecting Foxconn’s Chinese factories, upon Apple’s request. Apple said that Auret van Heerden, the president of the FLA, is leading a group of labor rights experts in the first round of inspections at the sprawling plant in Shenzhen, China, more informally known as
‘Foxconn City.’ The FLA’s independent assessment — completely supplementary to Apple’s own auditing practices — will involve interviewing thousands of Foxconn employees about the working and living conditions, including working hours, compensation, managerial issues, and health and safety conditions. Foxconn has ‘pledged full cooperation with the FLA,’ and will reportedly allow unrestricted access to all of their operations. The investigative team will report their findings in early March on the FLA’s website. Apple’s other suppliers, including Quanta and Pegatron, will be inspected later this spring. By the time summer rolls around, the FLA hopes to have covered 90 percent of facilities where Apple products are built and assembled.”

Yo-Yo Factory brings Hyper Scanner yo-yo gaming to Toy Fair, we go hands-on
We’ll forgive you if you’ve never heard of Hyper Scanner. The carnival style arcade game is apparently all the rage in Japan, though. Kids line up to battle it for king of the yo-yo hill. Yo-Yo Factory came out to Toy Fair to show off its customizable yo-yo system, designed for the serious aficionado. Everything from the weight, to the bearings, to the colors can be tailored to your taste and to greatly improve the performance for particular tasks. The Hyper Scanner measures how fast the toy spins in RPMs and rates your performance — not unlike a high striker. Brand manager and member of the development team Ben McPhee demoed how much better his company’s products are over a standard yo-yo by ratcheting it up to near 7,000RPM. This Engadget editor was also given a chance to prove his yo-yo mettle, but couldn’t break the 3,000 mark. Of course, the game has plenty of blinking lights and loud noises to entice you to play — including repeatedly shouting “hyper” at you in a thick Japanese accent. Check out the video after the break to see it in action.

Romney Invokes Fair Use In Dispute With NBC Over Campaign Ad
An anonymous reader writes “Mitt Romney’s campaign is airing an ad that is basically 30 seconds lifted from an NBC News broadcast and NBC is trying to stop them from using the ad. I found it interesting that the Romney campaign is invoking fair use to defend the ad. Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom said ‘we believe it falls within fair use. We didn’t take the entire broadcast; we just took the first 30 seconds.’”

A Job Fair For Jobs In India — In California
dcblogs writes “Indian and U.S. companies are holding a job fair at the San Jose Convention Center this weekend for jobs in India. The job fair is aimed at Indian workers in the U.S., but anyone with an interest in working overseas can attend. India is pitched as a ‘sea of opportunity’ in a PowerPoint presentation about the job fair. That’s in contrast to another slide that makes the obvious point that the U.S. has ‘barely recovered from a downturn,’ with ‘signs that it’s headed for another.’”

Judge Rules Twitter Data Fair Game In Wikileaks Investigation
Wired reports that “The Justice Department is entitled to records of the Twitter accounts used by three current and former WikiLeaks associates, a federal judge ruled Thursday, dealing a victory to prosecutors in a routine records demand that turned into a fierce court battle over online privacy and free speech. … The Justice Department has been seeking the Twitter records under 18 USC 2703(d), a 1994 amendment to the Stored Communications Act that allows law enforcement access to non-content internet records, such as transaction information, without demonstrating the ‘probable cause’ needed for a full-blown search warrant.”
Jacob Appelbaum, one of the three, was also detained on his re-entry to the U.S. last August (as well as on numerous other occasions) and had his email records seized as well. The others are Birgitta Jonsdottir (a member of Iceland’s parliament) and Dutch businessman Rop Gonggrijp.
