iPlayer for Android update brings improved experience for Galaxy S III, Note 2 and Nexus 4, tablets to follow

Excuse us while we interrupt your episode of The Archers, but we thought users of BBC’s iPlayer might like to know about the latest Android app update. Amongst the usual bug fixes, the update promises to offer a “much improved” viewing experience on big hitting devices such as Samsung’s Galaxy S III and Note 2, plus the Nexus 4. The Beeb stopped short of spilling further details, but it does go on to confirm that it’ll continue to apply spit-and-polish to the playback experience for as much hardware as it can, without having to wait for app updates. We hope this doesn’t mean it’ll be treading on any toes, of course. Fans of slightly bigger screens (which is more of you, apparently) can expect some attention soon, with a hat tip about a tablet update coming in the next release.

Improving the Fedora Boot Experience

An anonymous reader writes with a link to a recent post on Red Hat senior interaction designer Máirín Duffy’s blog with an illuminating look at Red Hat’s design process, and how things like graphic elements, widget behavior, and bootup time are taken into account. It starts: “So I have this thing on my desk at Red Hat that basically defines a simple design process. (Yes, it also uses the word ‘ideate’ and yes, it sounds funny but it is a real word apparently!) While the mailing list thread on the topic at this point is high-volume and a bit chaotic, there is a lot of useful information and suggestions in there that I think could be pulled into a design process and sorted out. So I took 3 hours (yes, 3 hours) this morning to wade through the thread and attempt to do this.”

Clear For Mac Launches, Translates A Made-For-Mobile Experience To The Desktop

clear-for-macClear for Mac had a unique challenge in making its way from the iPhone to the desktop, since Clear was obviously built with iOS in mind.. In fact, its primary appeal was the fact that it largely did away with control elements inherited from the desktop, dropping buttons in favor of gestures made commonplace thanks to the success of iOS. So bringing it to OS X, and keeping Clear recognizable while addressing the needs of mouse and keyboard users, presented quite a bit of a challenge.

Windows 8 upgrade diary: the buying experience

Windows 8 upgrade diary part one: the buying experience

There were balloons. There were streamers. There were brand new Ultrabooks, members of staff unfurling banners, and — once other customers started to arrive — there was even a vibe of genuine excitement for today’s official launch of Windows 8 in the UK. But whichever aisle I scanned, nowhere was to be found what I had come to buy: a Windows 8 disc for desktop upgraders. It was a faltering start, but it was also strangely symbolic of my mission — namely, to explore what Microsoft’s latest operating system can do for regular desktop folk. People who, in other words, aren’t yet looking to invest in touch-enabled monitors or laptops or all-in-ones; who rarely get the chance to lean back with a media-consumption tablet; and who simply want to upgrade their traditional tower PC before getting on with their lives. Read on past the break and you can begin this potentially short, hopefully sweet journey with me, starting with a quick rundown of my test rig (which also happens to be my mission critical work computer) and an anti-climactic revelation about whether, in the end, I ever found the software box I was looking for.

Redux promises to bring a ‘lean-back TV experience’ to new Sony and LG devices

DNP Redux promises to bring a 'leanback TV experience' to new Sony and LG devices

Smart TV and set-top box users unhappy with tedious menu-clicking might have already found Redux, a Google TV app that streamlines online content selection. Now though, buyers of new Sony Google TV and LG Smart TVs and Blu-ray players will find the handy streaming guide baked right in. It works by allowing user “curators” to create their own video channels on subjects like music and tech, which the software then presents in a directory for other like-minded viewers. Redux also has deals with publishers like Hearst, letting it stream premium content from Popular Mechanics, Car and Driver and other brands. Already one of the top apps in the Google and Samsung TV ecosystems, the new deals with Sony and LG mean it could appear on up to 40 million devices by the end of the year. So, if you’re tired of hunting and pecking and want to couch-surf online programs more traditionally, check the source for more info.

Opera Updates Its Desktop Browser, Adds Camera Support To Push The Native Web Experience

cookie monsterTwo weeks after pushing through an update for its most popular browser, Opera Mini for mobile devices, Opera is turning its attention to its desktop product, with the release of Opera 12 for Macs and PCs. Opera tells me its desktop browser is currently the second-biggest product in terms of monthly users, with 60 million, compared to 173 million for Opera Mini and 17 million for Opera Mobile. While that is pretty small compared to other desktop browsers like Chrome, Firefox or Internet Explorer, that number is also growing at a healthy pace right now, increasing by 11 percent of all users over the last year, with average revenue per user on the desktop product (mainly from ads) is up 20 percent.

With rumors of a possible Facebook acquisition going quiet for now, Opera is looking to boost that desktop usage number even more with a list of new features, including browser camera support, security badges, right-to-left language support, hardware acceleration (something it has long touted with its mobile product), improved plug-in support and something fun: the introduction of skins, or themes, for the browser. (And no, we don’t know if Sesame Workshop has approved use of what looks a lot like the Cookie Monster skin pictured here. We’ll ask – update below the break.)

Google Talks About Its Ubuntu Experience

dartttt writes “There was a very interesting session at the Ubuntu Developer Summit by Google developer Thomas Bushnell. He talked about how Ubuntu, its derivatives and Goobuntu (Google’s customized Ubuntu based distro) are used by Google developers. He starts by saying ‘Precise Rocks,’ and that many Google employees use Ubuntu — including managers, software engineers, translators, people who wrote the original Unix, and people who have no clue about Unix. Many developers working on Chrome and Android use Ubuntu. Ubuntu systems at Google are upgraded every LTS release. The entire process of upgrading can take as much as four months, and it is also quite expensive, as one reboot or a small change can cost them as much as a million dollars across the company.”
Bushnell also mentions that Google Drive will soon be available for Linux. Other news out of UDS: there was discussion of a GNOME flavor of 12.10, Electronic Arts reaffirmed that they “won’t delay their Windows work for Linux,” and Unity 2D is likely to disappear in 12.10.

User Experience And The Poison On The Tip Of The Arrow

161936732_1e175da046I used Path twice. None of the people that I know are using Path. I even checked with an early adopter of social media recently and one of Path’s earliest users. She told me that she doesn’t see a lot of people using it. Generally, this is not a good indication. Maybe there are millions of secret Path users (or users in another geography that I don’t know about) but it seems that Path just doesn’t pick up.

Sure, Path 2.0 design is amazing. However, amazing design is not enough. It is like fashion. Everybody is excited about it at the beginning, but then people are getting used to it and eventually it wears out. After it does, the user is left with the essence of the user experience and what Path misses most is a compelling and unique user experience that will make using it worthwhile.

The latest such clip comes from a third party, so take it with a hefty pinch of Morton’s. It shows some slow motion footage of a drop of water falling into a bigger body of H2O, then a message emerges from the resulting concentric waves telling us to “Experience the Infinity.” Whatever that means, it’ll be “coming soon” — next week, apparently, as the video finishes up touting Milano Design Week, which starts on April 17th. Is the video legit? Will some fabulous new device make its mark in Milan? We’ve no idea, but it certainly has a style similar to other teasers we’ve seen from the Taiwanese firm. Then, a guy named George Eastman comes up with a new way to take photos. He develops a special flexible, unbreakable, rolled film that allows people to take photos and then send the film to a factory where the photos can be developed and sent back to the customer’s house. Suddenly, photography becomes available to everyone. Kodak is born.

HP To Launch New Online Retail Experience At The End Of March, Code-Named “Atlas”

under-construction-sign-digital-600x500HP.com is a mess. It has been for years. Ferrari offers Winter Driving Experience in Colorado

I would be willing to bet that any of the people that own high powered exotic cars like Ferraris aren’t able to drive the cars to 50% of their potential on dry roads, much less in rain or on ice. Ferrari wants to be sure that its owners and enthusiasts can drive their awesome Italian sports cars in the ice and show. With winter coming soon to many areas and to educate drivers, Ferrari is having a new driver’s event.

The event is called the Winter Driving Experience and is based on the Pilota On Ice events held in Italy. The course is a two-day program that uses the ugliest Ferrari next to the California, the two-door, four-seater Ferrari FF. This car was chosen thanks to its four-wheel drive system. The snow and ice drivers education event is going to provide the drivers with one of eight FF cars to use.

The event will be held at the Little Nell Resort in Aspen Colorado. The program isn’t free and will cost $ 11,300 per driver and there will be 10-12 students in the program. The two-night hotel stay is included and the price includes a Champagne reception and two group dinners along with lunches at the track. A guest can be included with the students for $ 950. You could buy a nice used car for the price of learning to hoon a Ferrari in the snow.
