Ubuntu Touch Developers Aim for Daily Phone Usability Before June
colinneagle writes with the latest Ubuntu Touch news. From the article: “The team behind Ubuntu Touch (aka ‘Ubuntu for Phones’) have committed to pushing forward to a ready-to-use version of the OS, one that the group will use to ‘eat their own dog food,’ by the end of May. What that means: Over the next few weeks, the team behind Ubuntu Touch is going to be attempting to implement enough functionality to make it possible to use Ubuntu on your phone (such as the Nexus 4) on a day-to-day basis. At which point their development team will be doing exactly that.” The developers are aiming just to have basic functionality working by the end of the month: calls, sms, data over wifi and cellular, a working address book, and preservation of user data across OS flashes.

Alibaba Group Launches Daily Deals Site Juhuasuan Overseas In Hong Kong & Taiwan
Alibaba Group announced that it has launched Juhuasuan Overseas, a combination of C2C retail platform Taobao Marketplace and group shopping site Juhuasuan, in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Juhuasuan Overseas will offer merchandise and services from selected Taobao sellers in the same daily deals format as the original Juhuasuan, which is accessible only to customers in mainland China because cross-border shipping is not supported. Juhuasuan Overseas currently offers between 12 and 20 new group shopping deals each day, and will begin selling localized lifestyle services and travel deals to Hong Kong customers in a few weeks. Daphne Lee, director of Taobao International Business, said in a statement that the new Web site will leverage Taobao Marketplace and Tmall.com’s (one of Alibaba Group’s B2C e-commerce platforms) 2 million existing customers in Hong Kong and Taiwan. According to Alibaba Group, there were 1.4 million registered Taobao users in Hong Kong and 600,000 in Taiwan as of the end of 2012. Originally launched under Taobao Marketplace in March 2010, Juhuasuan was spun-off as an independent subsidiary of Alibaba Group in October 2011. Though it faced competition from other Chinese group-buying Web sites like Lashou, 55tuan, and Meituan, Juhuasuan has grown in part by partnering with local service providers throughout the country. That tactic has helped Juhuasuan grow into China’s top group-buying site, with 34 percent market share according to research group Dataotuan, double the share held by its next largest competitor, Meituan.

Surprise: Europe’s King Now Has Nearly As Many Daily Users As Zynga
Around four years ago, Riccardo Zacconi said he was close to selling King, the arcade gaming company that he had co-founded and bootstrapped six years earlier. The company, which has a destination site at King.com, had lost about 45 percent of its traffic as one of its biggest partners Yahoo! Games cut back. Facebook, the next big platform King was eyeing, had started to curb the cheap virality that fueled the rise of Zynga. But after two big pivots onto the Facebook platform and then iOS, King has staged a revival. Today, the company has the #1 grossing game in the U.S. on iOS, and possibly in the world. The company said this week that it has 50 million daily active players, which is just shy of the 54 million daily actives Zynga reported last quarter. About 49 million of their monthly actives are playing King games on mobile phones and tablets. “Zynga’s competitive advantage in the past was the size of their network and I think we’ve closed the gap,” Zacconi said. Because of that big shift, they’re dropping the “.com” from their company’s name. So it’s King, not King.com. Unlike many competitors that jump on new platforms right away, King has been cautious. The company only started launching mobile titles last fall with Bubble Witch Saga and Candy Crush Saga. They only came to Facebook in early 2011 — when many other companies started putting the platform on the backburner. Zacconi said that the success of their hit mobile game Candy Crush Saga took him by surprise. “You read the stats in reports from companies like IDC. But when you experience it, it’s mind-blowing,” he said. A little more than 24 million people play the company’s mobile games every day. He says that Candy Crush is played by 1.3 million people a day in Hong Kong. That’s almost 20 percent of the city’s entire population. The reason the King has been able to be late to market and still do well has to do with the building blocks it has laid out over the last 10 years. King has a portfolio of about 150 games on its destination site, which operates like a lab for titles it can later bring to Facebook and mobile phones. They test out titles with their “hardcore casual” group of gamers on King.com, who play about five to six hours a day. The

A Big Deal For The Middle East, Daily Deals Site Cobone Acquired By Tiger Global Management
After months of speculation that its backer Jabbar Internet Group were shopping around for a sale, the leading Middle Eastern daily deals site Cobone has been acquired by investment firm Tiger Global Management.
The size of the deal remains undisclosed, though my understanding is that the figure of $ 40 million that’s been touted building up to this sale isn’t far off the mark.
Furthermore, the acquisition — which sees Jabber Internet Group exit entirely — is said to leave Dubai-based Cobone with additional capital to further its ambitions in the region, while its Irish founder and CEO Paul Kenny, along with other key members of the management team, will remain with the company.

News Corp’s The Daily iPad App Shutting Down On December 15
An anonymous reader writes with news that, as predicted, the iPad only newspaper The Daily failed. From the article: “The goal of The Daily was to provide a modern spin on the news cycle by delivering world news draped in a multimedia experience. In other words, The Daily devoted a lot of resources towards adding photos, video, and touch controls to news stories that would otherwise be static. … It was announced today that The Daily will be closing up shop on December 15 after failing to rake in the dough.”

Daily deals company
Local business data provider Locu is announcing a partnership with Yelp today, in order to help update Yelp’s menus and other listings data with Locu’s real-time information directly from businesses. This will allow restaurants on Locu to distribute their menus and daily specials to Yelp, but it will also help Locu further expand into other verticals beyond restaurants alone. The move comes on the heels of Locu’s partnership earlier this spring with WordPress maker Automattic, which allowed restaurants to more easily add their Locu-powered menus to their WordPress blogs. The company has also been busy rolling support for other third parties, including OpenTable, TripAdvisor and CitySearch. The startup, backed by $ 4 million in Series A funding, extracts data from business websites then makes it available in a structured format, including via its API. Business owners who claim their pre-populated Locu profile, or who sign up for the service on their own, will have access to edit the data as need be, then push it out to their own website, mobile site, Facebook page, WordPress blog, and other local directories, like, as of now, Yelp. The benefit to using Locu over traditional local business listing providers, explains co-founder and CEO Rene Reinsberg, is the speed with which Locu can serve updates. “If you look at the historical providers, typically how they work is once a week, once a month, and in some cases once a day – but that’s really the exception – the provider would get a feed and updates,” he says. “The concept here [with Locu] is to have a real-time functionality.” “That’s where we need to be headed anyway,” adds Reinsberg, “because today a lot of searches are happening on mobile phones so they’re immediate – you’re looking for something right now.” For restaurants, which are still the majority of Locu’s user base, the Yelp integration means they’ll be able to have their current menu, including daily specials, seen by Yelp users on both web and mobile. Locu now has over 15,000 merchants on its platform. The company offers a freemium service, where paid users have a set of additional premium options, templates, and support for $ 25 per month. This includes the ability to trial Locu Takeout, an online ordering option for restaurants, as well as publish photos to Facebook, OpenTable, and now, Yelp, too. When Locu launched its business platform last October, the company said that around 80 percent of its business data
