Android metrics show Jelly Bean adoption overtaking Ice Cream Sandwich

Google dashboard metrics show Android 4 near 60 percent of active users

Google’s big shake-up of Android version metrics has already given us a better understanding of where the platform’s active users truly stand. Now that we’re a month into the new methodology, we have a good sense of where those users are going — and they’re moving to Jelly Bean in droves. Android 4.1 and 4.2 combined grew to represent 28.4 percent of regular usage, or enough to finally overtake Ice Cream Sandwich at 27.5 percent. Not surprisingly, the transition to the newer OS involved a balanced mix of users either upgrading from ICS (down by 1.8 percent) or transitioning from devices running Gingerbread or earlier (down 1.7 percent). It will be a long while before Jelly Bean becomes the dominant platform, if it ever does, but we’re not expecting a slowdown in adoption when flagships like the Galaxy S 4 and One are luring many of us into an upgrade.

Valve launches Steam Greenlight to pick cream of indie game crop

Valve launches Steam Greenlight to pick cream of indie game crop for its store

Steam has developed a reputation as a haven for indie games like Super Meat Boy, so it’s only fitting that store owner Valve has just launched a section to welcome more of those games into its tent. Greenlight lets small developers submit titles and have gamers vote as to whether or not the candidates should get space on Steam’s virtual shelf. Pickier players don’t have to see every game in contention; they can filter the list down to specific game types and platforms, and collections can narrow the selection to categories hand-picked by fans or publishers. No games have cleared Greenlight just yet, but it won’t be long before the logjam becomes a flood — between this and general apps, Steam is about to get a lot more crowded.

Archos unveils 7-inch GamePad with physical controls, Ice Cream Sandwich for ‘less than €150′

DNP EMBARGO Archos unveils ICSrunning GamePad with physical controls

Archos already has its hands in the kiddie-tablet market, with its 7-inch Arnova Child Pad, and it’s taking on the productivity-minded crowd with its keyboard-toting 101 XS. Now the company is going after another niche segment with the just-announced GamePad. The 7-inch slate runs Android 4.0 with a dual-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz and a quad-core Mali 400 MP GPU, and it sports physical gaming controls in addition to the standard touchscreen. Archos includes its own “game recognition and mapping tools,” which ensure that the physical buttons are compatible with Android games that use virtual controls (some 1,000 titles are apparently compatible with the GamePad at this point). Of course, this is an internet-enabled device as well, and it will include full access to the Play market and WiFi connectivity when it goes on sale at the end of October. Other specs include 8GB of internal storage, plus a microSD card slot that adds up to 64GB. There’s also a mini-HDMI connection for outputting content to your TV. For now, Archos is only announcing pricing as “less than €150″, and the device will drop in the US and Europe at the same time. For now, the below-the-break press release will have to satisfy your curiosity.

HTC Thunderbolt, Droid Incredible 2 go back to the future with leaked Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs

HTC Thunderbolt, Incredible 2 go back to the future with leaked Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs

Looks like some HTC oldies are in store for Android OS goodies — unofficially. Though Verizon’s yet to publicly confirm availability, it does appear Droid Incredible 2 and Thunderbolt owners (like this sorry bastard) are in store for a very real Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade. Two deodexed ROMs based on purported stock 4.0.4 builds have recently hit the forums treating eager and, in the case of that latter LTE handset, beleaguered users to a host of performance tweaks, as well as that Sense 3.6 skin. It should go without saying that you’ll need to be rooted to flash either leak and, as always, the usual warnings apply: backup first and proceed at your own risk. That said, consider this your ticket past the Big Red tape.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi gets taste of Ice Cream Sandwich in the US

Samsung Galaxy Tab 101 WiFi gets taste of Ice Cream Sandwich in the US

Samsung was widely (if unofficially) expected to upgrade the Galaxy Tab line to Ice Cream Sandwich this summer. Thankfully, that wasn’t just wishful thinking on the part of a few fans. Numerous Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi owners in the US have reported receiving an official push to Android 4.0.4 shortly after getting out of bed on Monday. The new TouchWiz, Chrome support and more are all welcome — just don’t anticipate any unique twists from the upgrade. In some respects, we’re likely getting a Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 with a Tegra 2 processor. The only real uncertainties are when the rest of the eligible Galaxy Tab line will make the leap as well as the possibility of Jelly Bean; hopefully, it’s not the end of the update road for some of Samsung’s earliest tablet adopters in the country.

Ice Cream Sandwich takes a bite out of Gingerbread, represents 159 percent of Android devices

Two major updates later (three if you count the tablet-exclusive Honeycomb), and Gingerbread is finally starting to falter. According to Google’s latest two week survey of devices accessing the Play store, Ice Cream Sandwich is on the rise, filling out 15.9-percent of the Android user base. That’s a full five points ahead of Android 4.0′s July score, and it’s eating into the OS’ other flavors: Gingerbread (Android 2.3) dropped by 3.4-percent, Froyo (Android 2.2) by 1.8 and Eclair (Android 2.1) by a meager half a percent. Google’s latest confectionery update, Jelly Bean (Android 4.1), made an appearance as well, eking out a shy 0.8-percent of the market. According to multiple tipsters, and promptly confirmed by The Now Network’s legitimate support page, Google’s ICS assortment is now being delivered OTA — a wee bit earlier than expected, no less — to the now-discontinued HTC EVO 3D. As we could imagine, the tasty software update brings previously known features to the 4.3-inch device, including folders, improved browser, resizable widgets and the crowd-pleasing Face Unlock method. Needless to say, Sprint certainly took its sweet time to dish out the long-awaited 4.0 nuggets — but better late than never, right?

Huawei outs MediaPad 7 Lite with Ice Cream Sandwich, doesn't tell us when it's coming

Yesterday, we heard Huawei’s 1H 2012 numbers had turned out positive for the most part — which, of course, were helped in large part by having those rather popular Ascend D1 and P1 up for grabs in the China region. Now, it may or may not be in hopes of a better second half, but the Chinese outfit’s just very quietly taken the wraps off of its newest tablet: the MediaPad 7 Lite. As the numerical figure in the moniker would tell, this particular Huawei tablet sports a 7-inch (1280 x 800) form factor, with other features like Mountain View’s Ice Cream Sandwich and 3G connectivity (WiFi as well) also said to be included in the light package. Sadly, there’s still many deets up in the air, as Huawei hasn’t revealed where, or when, we can expect the MediaPad 7 Lite to launch. In the meantime, though, feel free to head over to the company’s site, where you’ll find some extra eye candy.

ASUS MeMO 370T 7-inch tablet clears the FCC, leaves no trace of Ice Cream or Jelly behind

Image

The 7-inch ASUS Eee Pad MeMO ME370T we saw in early prototype form during CES just passed through the FCC. It’s still only showing WiFi radios with no trace of a cellular connection, although if it’s going to be the $ 249 standard bearer NVIDIA and ASUS were so excited about, that’s to be expected. A juicier rumor that has surfaced in the intervening period however, suggests this device will actually be released as a Google Nexus 7-inch tablet (or just sold from a Google store), and could even feature the next version of Android, codenamed Jelly Bean. It could also sell for as low as $ 149, although the cheaper reworked version might swap out a Tegra processor for one from Qualcomm. We didn’t spot anything in the filings to back that up, but you can paw through the PDFs yourself at the link below, or just get an idea of what it looks like in non-line drawn form with our gallery of pics from CES 2012.

Motorola skipping Ice Cream Sandwich for some devices, worries it'll make them fat

Despite Motorola’s Android 4.0 rollout schedule, not every one of the manufacturer’s devices are ready for dessert — some, the outfit says, will be put on a diet. “Obviously we want the new release to improve our devices,” the company said in a recent blog post, “If we determine that can’t be done, well, then we’re not able to upgrade that particular device.” Handsets that are bogged down by Ice Cream Sandwich simply won’t get an update. Even so, Motorola affirms that it’s working closely with Google to keep its hardware up to date.

Leaked T-Mobile roadmap outlines Ice Cream Sandwich updates, new myTouch devices

Looks like our friends over at TMoNews have unearthed a roadmap with some tasty morsels of info about what’s coming down the pipe from T-Mobile USA in the next few months. Of course, none of this is set in stone or even confirmed, so take it with a grain of salt.

Most interesting is a pair of dates for Ice Cream sandwich updates, with Magenta’s Galaxy S II slated to receive Android 4.0 on May 14th, followed by the Sensation 4G and Amaze 4G getting ICS (with Sense 3.6, presumably) on June 16th.

A bunch of device launches from Samsung and Huawei round up the list of dates, with no sign of HTC’s One X, Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S III, or T-Mobile’s rumored Galaxy Note variant. Sadness. Check out the entire bounty below.

  • May 9th: Huawei Astor (low-end phone for 7-Eleven)
  • July 11th: Huawei Buddy and Phoenix (myTouch QWERTY and slate, respectively)
  • July 11th: Samsung Gravity TXT (new color)
  • Aug 1st: Samsung T159 Cacao (low-end handset)

HTC’s been far from quiet since unveiling its One series to the masses, and today the company’s continuing the trend by launching three new devices in China. Ice Cream Sandwich leaks for Samsung Galaxy Note (update)

Image

For its part, Samsung has been none too coy about the upcoming Android 4.0 release for the Galaxy Note. So far, we know that it’s set for a Q2 debut and will pack a new set of S Pen apps, but if you’ve longed to jump into the frozen goodness a bit early, today you can rejoice — a leaked build of Ice Cream Sandwich for Samsung’s fabulous phablet has reared its head in the forums of RootzWiki. Curiously, the file is available only as an EXE, so you’ll want to exercise a bit of due diligence with this one. That having been said, comments in the forums are quite enthusiastic.

Update: Now that Ice Cream Sandwich is out in the wild, the community is already circling back to provide a rundown of what more tepid users may expect. Most notably, Samsung’s Premium Suite for the Galaxy Note isn’t included in this build, and while TouchWiz is said to crash upon first boot and with the addition of a Google Play account, reports suggest that these are one-time glitches. Otherwise, much of the system is said to be in excellent shape. As for the EXE that we’d mentioned, it’s an Odin one-click file that’s designed to make the installation rather painless.

nexusicsI don’t blame Nexus S users for feeling a bit forgotten — for a device ostensibly meant to be on the cutting edge of Android updates, the Nexus S hasn;t had much luck on the Ice Cream Sandwich front.

If Engadget’s sources hold true though, that may all change very shortly. According to them, Google is once again preparing to make the Ice Cream Sandwich update available, and it’s expected to drop within the “next few weeks.”

Asus gets Android Ice Cream Sandwich how-to

Consumers who have an Asus netbook, rejoice. Developers have managed to create the latest version of Android so that Asus Eee PC customers will be able to run the latest Google operating system on their device. The initiative is not endored by Asus or Google, but it seems to work pretty well. At least, that’s

HTC firms Ice Cream Sandwich devices

HTC has just published a blog post that, aside from making a cheesy reference to ice cream sandwiches, confirms a list of devices that are guaranteed to eventually be pushed to Android 4.0. The latest version of Google’s mobile operating system has a bad track record when it comes to legacy device upgrades, but manufacturers

Motorola Further Details ICS Rollout, But Is Verizon Delaying The Ice Cream Party In The States?

489096006_48312d11ac_zSlowly but surely Ice Cream Sandwich will hit last year’s flagship Android phones. Motorola just updated its ICS schedule that details the expected timetable for each device. The biggest change is that ICS is now scheduled for non-US RAZR models. But that’s seemingly the case for most Moto devices. For the most part ICS will hit Moto devices starting in the second quarter — but only for non-Verizon devices in the US. Here in the States the status of ICS for the majority of Motorola’s devices is still listed as “Evaluation & Planning” with “Further details to follow”.

The updated ICS rollout schedule lists 13 US devices: three are WiFi-only tablets, two are AT&T-only, one is for Sprint, one is for U.S. Cellular and the rest are Verizon devices. Wanna guess which devices do not have an expected rollout date?

Samsung Finally Pushes Ice Cream Sandwich To The Galaxy S IIs Of The World

Screen shot 2012-03-12 at 11.08.30 PMWell, after a bit of a false start, Samsung finally seems to have done it. According to a new blog post on the official Samsung Tomorrow blog, the Korean consumer electronics giant has finally begun to push their Ice Cream Sandwich update out to the Galaxy S IIs of the world.

And with that, Galaxy S II owners began once again to feel the love. Or at least, most of them did. The update in question is meant for international spec Galaxy S II (the GT-I9100), so State-side owners of a AT&T/T-Mobile Galaxy S II or a Sprint Epic 4G Touch won’t be joining in the official fun just yet.

Archos unveils 7-inch Child Pad slate: $129, Ice Cream Sandwich on board

Archos unveils 7-inch Child Pad slate: $ 129, Ice Cream Sandwich on board
We know you’ve already added the Fisher Price DVR to the list of gadgets that may withstand the physical trauma your kid’s about to put it through. But how does an ICS-equipped, 7-inch slate with parental controls sound? Dubbed Child Pad, this sticky finger-friendly tab isn’t just flaunting the fact it’s tasting Android’s freshest treat before most of you, it’s doing so with a rather modest 1GHz CPU and 1GB of RAM. In theory, that should be enough to handle your little one’s multitouch doings. Speaking of, Archos is pairing up the $ 129 machine with access to the AppLibs Kids App Store, which offers a portfolio of over 10,000 games, books and apps. Unfortunately, there’s no word on what kind of ports or internal storage the Child Pad’s packing. The good news is Archos isn’t saying you need to be in first grade to use it, so feel free to grab one for yourself (or your kid) when it hits shelves at the end of the month.

Samsung unveils Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 with Ice Cream Sandwich

Samsung’s hitting fast and hard with a gamut of press releases just hours before Mobile World Congress. The latest is the update to their flagship tablet, the Galaxy Tab 10.1, which has been somewhat lazily christened the Galaxy Tab 2, 10.1 inch version. From a hardware perspective it looks like an updated version of the [...]
