NeuroGaming Conference Profiles the Rise of Brain-Computer Interfaces

kkleiner writes “The first NeuroGaming Conference and Expo took place at the beginning of May to showcase the convergent technologies that are paving the way toward gaming with your mind. Tech news has been dominated with stories about Google Glass and the Oculus Rift, which was on display for attendees to test out. Other technologies that utilize EEG are opening up possibilities of a controller-free gaming experience into virtual realities with unlimited potential. ‘Deeper questions surrounding the morality of neurogames will be sure to stir debate. As virtual reality technology inches closer to lifelike resolution, should gamers simulate themselves as characters engaged in acts of violence or criminal activity? It’s unpredictable what these games could uncover about the user as neurogames gain insight into a users’ psyche and how they respond to stimuli at a subconscious level. For instance, a game could uncover how its user particularly enjoys shooting at civilians in gameplay. Games might even become expert at diagnosing psychiatric disorders. As computers become exponentially more powerful, game resolution could fully mimic our ever-present reality.’”

Visualized: A walk through the Inside 3D Printing Conference and Expo

We didn’t find much in the way of news at the Inside 3D Printing Conference and Expo here in NYC (and, we’re sad to say, our press badges were just old-fashioned 2D printed), but there was plenty to look at, thankfully. Between the slew of business and consumer devices and the boatload of printed objects, the event was part business conference, part art show. And while the real star was the still-fresh world of desktop home printers, plenty of companies brought out their big-gun industrial devices (including at least one really sweet giant 3D scanner). Peep the gallery below to check out some of the eye candy from the event.

TJX Hacker Gives Keynote At ‘Offensive’ Security Conference

An anonymous reader writes “Two hundred hackers from around the world gathered at a Miami Beach hotel Thursday and Friday for the Infiltrate Security conference, which focuses on systems hacking from the ‘offensive’ perspective (with slides) . In a keynote address, Stephen Watt, who served two years in prison for writing the software used by his friend Alberto Gonzalez to steal millions of credit card numbers from TJX, Hannaford and other retailers, acknowledges he was a ‘black hat’ but denies that he was directly involved in TJX or any other specific job. Watt says his TCP sniffer logged critical data from a specified range of ports, which was then encrypted and uploaded to a remote server. Brad ‘RenderMan’ Haines gave a presentation on vulnerabilities of the Air Traffic Control system, including the FAA’s ‘NextGen’ system which apparently carries forward the same weakness of unencrypted, unauthenticated location data passed between airplanes and control towers. Regarding the recent potential exploits publicized by Spanish researcher Hugo Teso, Haines says he pointed out similar to the FAA and its Canadian counterpart a year ago, but received only perfunctory response.”

Microsoft to host BUILD dev conference on Apple’s home ground

Microsoft Announces The Dates For Its Next Build Developer Conference: June 26-28 In San Francisco

msbuild2013logoBuild is Microsoft’s developer conference for its Windows, Windows Phone, Windows Server and Azure platforms and the company just announced that Build 2013 will take place June 26-28 at San Francisco’s Moscone Center. Registration will open next week, Tuesday, April 2 at 9am PT and early bird pricing for the first 500 registrants starts at $ 1,595. As Steve Guggenheimer, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President and Chief Evangelist, notes in today’s announcement, “it’s been a while since our last developer event in the Bay Area.” The last Build, which happened last October, right after the Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 launch, took place in Redmond, where the company put up a massive tent on its sprawling campus to host a few thousand developers. Build 2011 was held in Anaheim California. Guggenheimer, of course, didn’t reveal anything about the company’s plans for Build besides saying that Microsoft will “hare updates and talk about what’s next for Windows, Windows Server, Windows Azure, Visual Studio and more. Build is the path to creating and implementing your great ideas, and then differentiating them in the market.” Blue Earlier today, however, Frank X. Shaw, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Corporate Communications at Microsoft, publicly acknowledged that “product leaders across Microsoft are working together on plans to advance our devices and services, a set of plans referred to internally as ‘Blue.’” This, as far as I can see, marks the first time the company has publicly acknowledged this project and chances are we will hear quite a bit more about it come June 26. As is tradition at Microsoft now, Shaw also took a less than subtle swipe at Google in an earlier post today. “While some folks were out doing ‘spring cleaning,’ we used the opportunity to look back a bit at what has happened in the past season, and to look ahead at what we have coming,” wrote in post that recapped some of Microsoft’s product releases over the last year.

ASUS posts MWC presser highlights video, relive the weirdest press conference in recent memory

A smattering of confused applause from an audience wondering if they hadn’t partied a little too hard while out on the town in Barcelona the night before. The video’s after the break. Come for the gadgets and stay for the mind-boggling strangeness of it all.

Solid-State Sequencer Debuts at Genome Conference

Nabsys’s technology could provide the positional accuracy missing from current DNA sequencing methods.

Nabsys, a DNA technology startup, showed off today its solid-state gene sequencing machine at the Advances in Genome Biology and Technology conference in Marco Island, Florida. The company says that later this year it will begin selling its machine, which will allow researchers to determine the structural organization of long stretches of DNA. This differs from most existing sequencing methods, which read DNA in short snippets that are later stitched together by software. The new system will, at first, complement existing methods, but it could eventually offer cheaper and faster sequencing than other approaches.

Boring Conference Still Vows: We Will Not Rock You

An anonymous reader writes “The Boring 2012 Conference, the celebration of unexciting things served with dry British humor, now belongs to the wastepaper basket of history. Big Ten Network carriage agreements may be motivating conference expansion

Big Ten Network carriage agreements main motivator for conference expansion

It’s no secret that college football is big business and that a major contributing factor is revenue from television. The influential reach of that revenue is a hot debate in organizations that are supposed to put more ideal values above capitalistic ones — the two are not always at odds, though. So when a collegiate organization like the Big Ten Conference is motivated to expand, most would like to think it’s a school’s academic, or even athletic, merits that put said institution at the top of the want list. However, Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports believes the reason the Big Ten courted the University of Maryland and Rutgers University really just comes down to finding a way to sell an additional 14.6 million residents the Big Ten Network. The economics of sports networks on cable television is well documented — the majority pay so that the vocal minority may watch — but sculpting an amateur sports league to ensure your cable TV channel gets carriage in America’s largest media markets might be a new twist.

Meetupcall Launches As A Painless Way To Host A Conference Call

200460v2-max-250x250I consider myself a member of the ‘Skype-generation’: I’ve never had to organise a traditional conference call in my life, although like other TechCrunch writers, I’ve had to join a few. Hosting one is a pain, apparently, as you have to juggle things like participant and leader PINs, country-specific dial-in numbers, and sending out the invites themselves.

Meetupcall, which today sees its official (re)launch, aims to address this to become the “simplest and quickest way” to host and join a conference call. Its headline feature is the ability to arrange a conference in seconds, simply by adding an appointment to your calendar app, after which Meetupcall takes care of the rest.
