Sony patent application reimagines PlayStation Move with ultrasonic capabilities, IR emitters
A redesigned PlayStation Move? Sony’s taken a stab at it before — but this time around, it’s imagining a controller with ultrasonic location analysis and Wiimote-like IR tracking. A new patent application details a “method for determining location of a controller,” which proposes tracking controller depth by measuring the travel time of sound emitted from the device to the television. Two-dimensional tracking would be managed via the existing Move’s visual spectrum camera, or by using a display-mounted IR emitter in conjunction with a remote mounted sensor (again, just like the Wii controller).
Although not technically part of the patent, the application’s attached visual aids are pretty creative too — showcasing a completely redesigned Move wand with swappable button faceplates. One embodiment shows two Move controllers attached end-to-end, mimicking a sword, while another shows a pair side by side, linked by a full gamepad sized faceplate. One bold image shows a player with two devices strapped to his ankles, performing a backwards flip to kick a digital soccer ball — Sony is apparently very confident about the patent’s potential tracking accuracy. We’ll reserve judgment until we see the technology in practice, but feel free to read the claims for yourself at the source link below, or simply mosey on past the break to see the aforementioned athlete trying to break his neck.

Samsung Galaxy Note II with dual-SIM capabilities gets spotted in the wild
Now that the second-gen Note is finally out of Samsung’s precious (and teasing) bag, we’re learning more and more about the exorbitant device — not to say we weren’t expecting this to be the case, however. Still, we were rather intrigued by the distinct Galaxy Note II pictured above, which, by the looks it, comes pre-loaded with dual-SIM capabilities, and thus makes this particular unit slightly different than that one unit we played with back at IFA. Although details are still very scarce at the moment, rumor has it the dual-SIM Note will only be available in China and, aside from the slot additions, all other features the famed phablet offers appear to be exactly the same. Feel free to check out the source below for more pics, but don’t expect anything too exciting or out of the ordinary — unless, of course, extra SIM slots are your thing.

Custom Android ROM Developers Get OTA Update Capabilities Like Carriers
hypnosec writes “A new service dubbed OTA Update Center has been launched that enables Android ROM developers to provide over-the-air (OTA) updates of their ROMs in a centralized and easy fashion. Custom ROM developers had very little at their disposal when it came to providing updates and when any user with such a ROM did want to apply an update, he/she was required to reinstall the new ROM from scratch that often involved deletion of backup, installation of new ROM, restoration of data. This was a lengthy process and often a deterrent when it came to updating the ROM. Also, the developers were required to have their own infrastructure whereby they would be required to host their own servers and have the required bandwidth to serve scores of downloads. The OTA Update Center changes this and provides a free to use service that is easy and noon-friendly to use. The website reads, ‘This project is especially for the rom devs around, to be able to implement an easy to use, and free OTA Update app.’”

Thomson’s 5.3-inch X-view 2 brings its dual-SIM capabilities, Android 4.0 to la France
Last we heard, Thomsom had its PoMMeS IPTV tablet land at the rigorous FCC offices — oh, and how could we forget that perky V888 slider from a few years back. Fast forward to today, and the company’s clearly adapted to the “new” times, now introducing its 5.3-inch, dual-SIM X-view 2 smartphone in France. The phablet-styled device boasts a qHD, 960 x 540 display alongside an undisclosed single-core 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, a 2500mAh battery to get you through the days and, as we’re finally becoming accustomed to seeing, a flavor of Android 4.0. Thomson notes the X-view 2 will hit French shelves later this summer, though there’s no word yet on how much cash you’ll have to unleash in order to grab one of these for yourself.

China’s Cyber-Warfare Capabilities Overstated
An anonymous reader writes “A new paper argues that China’s cyber-warfare capability is actually pretty poor. ‘[China has] evinced little proficiency with more sophisticated hacking techniques. The viruses and Trojan Horses they have used have been fairly easy to detect and remove before any damage has been done or data stolen. There is no evidence that China’s cyber-warriors can penetrate highly secure networks or covertly steal or falsify critical data,’ the paper reads (PDF). ‘They would be unable to systematically cripple selected command and control, air defense and intelligence networks and databases of advanced adversaries, or to conduct deception operations by secretly manipulating the data in these networks.’”
