Amazon’s Quidsi Gets Its Own Version Of Prime, With New Membership Program Called “Familyhood Plus”

familyhoodplusQuidsi, the Amazon-owned parent company to a collection of single word e-commerce domains including Diapers.com, Soap.com, Wag.com, Yoyo.com, and more, is today launching a new membership program called Familyhood Plus. The program offers consumers free two-day shipping with no minimum purchases, and other exclusive deals. Prior to today, Quidsi sites would only promise free two-day shipping for orders of $ 35 dollars or more, but these could include a cart filled with items from across all the Quidsi-owned sites. In addition, the company notes that many orders are now being delivered in a day or sooner, and in New York and San Francisco, Quidsi has been experimenting with same day delivery for orders placed before 9 AM. That makes the need for an exclusive shipping program negligible, perhaps. The new Familyhood Plus program is similar to Amazon’s own Prime membership program, which provides Amazon.com shoppers with free two-day shipping with no minimum order size. Amazon Prime is $ 79 per year, in part due to its other features including unlimited access to Prime Instant Video, and the Kindle Lending Library. Meanwhile, Quidsi’s Familyhood Plus program doesn’t have annual membership pricing set yet, the company notes. Instead, the program, which offers support across all ten of the Quidsi-run sites selling items for home, kids, babies, and pets, will be available only as a pilot trial for now. Using the coupon code “GOCRAZY,” consumers can try the program for free during the first three months, with annual pricing likely offered when the trial completes. The free shipping will apply to over 90 percent of the products on Quidsi sites, except for the “Add One” items which like Amazon.com add-on items, are products offered at a discount when tacked onto larger orders. When ordered alone, these “Add One” items will not qualify for free shipping. However, AutoShip orders and those placed via mobile devices and native apps will receive the free shipping benefit. Familyhood Plus members are also agreeing to receive promotional emails which offer exclusive deals, but there’s an opt-out process for those not interested in that aspect of the new service. Amazon has been ramping up its Quidsi properties this year, bringing Diapers.com to the iPad in February, adding pet medications to Wag.com in March, and debuting children’s fashion site Look.com just last month. More details on the new membership program are here.

Netflix 1080p streams no longer called XHigh, company credits improved encodes

While Netflix Watch Instantly movie streams are mostly useful for casual viewing, if you’re interested in the actual quality of the video provided you may have noticed a few changes recently. Chronicled in a thread on AVS Forum and reported to us by several tipsters, more than a few users have noticed their streams on 1080p-capable hardware (PlayStation 3, WDTV Live) no longer rock the “X-High” notification (on PS3, hit select to view more information bout your streaming details) that had previously let them know they were getting the highest quality possible. We checked with Netflix, and according to the company, it’s rolling out better encoding that improves picture quality despite using a lower bitrate. That means 1080p works even for people with slower connections, and increases detail on “textures, shadows, skies, and particularly faces.” As a result, what was previously called “X-High HD” is now being labeled a tier lower.

While it wasn’t mentioned specifically, some are theorizing the move is tied into Netflix’s use of eyeIO’s video encoding tech, which it announced earlier this year, to shrink the size of streams. eyeIO claims it can chop bandwidth by more than half for a 720p stream, something we’re sure a company that’s pushing as much data as Netflix would appreciate. Still, some viewers in the thread are claiming a noticeably softer picture as a result. Check after the break for the statement from Netflix, then take some time for “research” and let us know if you’re noticing any changes in picture quality lately.

Microsoft pilfers Surface name from its smart table, now called the PixelSense (video)

microsoft-pilfers-surface-name-from-Samsung-sur40

If Microsoft’s recent Surface announcement made you think about a funky LED table, that’s because it wasn’t long ago
that a joint effort with Samsung bore that moniker instead. While Redmond appropriated the name for its new tablet, the two companies are still selling the original device — now the Samsung SUR40 with Microsoft PixelSense — as a business collaboration tool. Though there’s no mention of price on Samsung’s site, the last time we checked, the 1920 x 1080 gorilla glass device was running a mere $ 8,400. For that sum, it might be useful for deep pocketed institutions — so hopefully early adopters hoping to earn some hipster cred didn’t end up with buyer’s remorse.

India’s $35 tablet is here, for real. Called Aakash, costs $60

India’s much-hyped $ 35 tablet for students is a reality. But, like every other super-cheap education project, the price has jumped – though in this case only to Rs 2,999 ($ 60). It turns out that the Aakash is actually an Ubislate 7 from Datawind (makers of the Pocketsurfer). Beneath the 7-inch 800 x 480 resistive touchscreen is a 366MHz Connexant CPU, 256MB of RAM and 2GB of storage (expandable via microSD) running Froyo and the Getjar market on top. The battery life is rated for a rather short three hours, and much less if you want to play HD video. In addition to the 802.11 a/b/g WiFi chip, you also get a GPRS modem to stay connected in rural areas. We wish India’s HRD Minster Kapil Sibal’s pet project all the best and if you want to see the device held snugly inside a Rs 300 ($ 7) keyboard folio, check out the picture after the break.

HTC Bliss to be called the Rhyme, launching September 20?

The HTC Bliss is a phone we’ve seen so much of that new press renders don’t necessarily show us anything we haven’t seen before — there have been enough hands-on photos, walkthrough videos and leaked Sense 3.5 screenshots that there’s really no questioning its future. The image you see above was leaked with a few new pieces of quality information: the Bliss will inevitably become the Rhyme once it hits stores — which plays right into HTC’s infatuation with Beats, though the tech probably won’t be incorporated here — and will likely be announced at the September 20th event (the date on the press image is often a solid indicator). HTCInside is also reporting that the Rhyme will be available in silver / white, pink / yellow and dark blue, so perhaps it isn’t completely for the ladies, no?
