Sprint’s early 4G LTE network tested in controlled conditions, hangs with the big boys

HTC EVO 4G LTE review wrap-up

Sprint doesn’t have much time to meet its goals and get its 4G LTE network up and running by mid-2012. The Now Network is definitely getting closer, though, and just gave PCMag the chance to test its fledgling LTE in Atlanta. Average speeds on the downlink sit squarely in between AT&T and Verizon, at 9 to 13Mbps, despite Sprint having to use 5MHz channels half as large as what AT&T can muster in some cities. Just don’t expect to upload 4K videos from your phone anytime soon: the 2.2Mbps average upload rate is certainly faster than on WiMAX or T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network, but it doesn’t hold a candle to the 4Mbps or even 6Mbps of Sprint’s bigger rivals. We’d likewise take the results with a large grain of salt. Even though Sprint is promising to focus on consistently good speed rather than bragging rights, the tests are in controlled conditions on a mostly unpopulated network. Our hope for now is just that the network goes live and that our EVO 4G LTEs live up to their potential.

InterDigital’s Bill Merritt on patent trolls, standards development and disputes with the big boys

The Engadget Interview InterDigital CEO Bill MerrittYou probably won’t know the name, but you most certainly use its technology on a daily basis. InterDigital is a pioneering company that helped develop WCDMA, 3G and HSDPA during its 50-year history. It counts former Apple CEO Gil Amelio as one of its directors, but the only time you’ll ever hear its name is when it’s embroiled in litigation.

Either because it’s suing, or being sued for licensing fees in the complex, murky world of wireless technologies, it’s easy to get the idea that InterDigital is a patent troll. A name that, both Nokia and most recently, Huawei have barely stopped short of throwing at the company.

But what’s it like being painted as the villain in the wireless business pantomime? Company president and CEO William “Bill” Merritt took the time to answer some of our questions, talk about what the company actually does, what’s in the future and why they definitely aren’t a patent troll.

Face-recognizing billboard ad identifies gender: no boys allowed (video)

A new face recognition ad will only reveal its full contents to women. It uses a “high-definition” camera to scan people’s faces, detecting their gender with an apparent 90 percent success rate. The charity, Plan UK, is looking to raise funds to sponsor education for girls living in developing countries; the outdoor display will run the full advert for female viewers, while men will get a brief glimpse followed by directions to the charity’s website. It’s aiming to demonstrate the limits put on young women in some countries — and is a pretty admirable use of facial recognition technology. Well, it’s not withholding pudding from minors. Check the bus display in action on the streets of London right after the break.

SEC sides with Beastie Boys’ Mike D, says AT&T must allow shareholder vote on net neutrality

Michael Diamond may be best known as Mike D of the Beastie Boys, but he’s also an AT&T shareholder, and he’s now played a central role in forcing a shareholder vote on net neutrality. He, along with his wife Tamra Davis and John P. Silva of Silva Artist Management previously submitted a proposal to AT&T arguing that shareholders should be allowed to vote a resolution that recommended the company “publicly commit to operate its wireless broadband network consistent with network neutrality principles.” AT&T unsurprisingly rejected that proposal, stating that it would “directly interfere with its network management practices,” but the SEC has now stepped in and said that net neutrality has become a “significant policy consideration,” and that it can no longer be excluded from shareholder ballots. As Bloomberg Businessweek notes, companies can challenge the SEC’s findings in court, although it remains to be seen if AT&T or other carriers will take that step. No further word from Mike D on the matter, so we’ll take this opportunity to share another important message of his after the break.
