SOINN gets intelligence boost, uses web-based image search to ID objects
Tokyo Institute of Technology’s SOINN (Self-Organizing Incremental Neural Network) bot was impressive enough during our first introduction back in 2011, but the intelligent device can now tap the web for its latest trick: accurate object identification. The updated system, which appears to utilize a database akin to Google’s image search, can scour the web for similar shots, making it possible to ID objects based on comparable structures published on the web. It can distinguish a box cutter from a knife, for example, or a rickshaw from a car. For now, SOINN is limited to identifying objects in images, including those captured in realtime with a camera, but its designers imagine that future revisions could enable content recognition in video streams, and audio clips, too. Our friends at DigInfo saw the update in action — check it out for yourself in the video after the break.

Inhon Carbon Tablet unfolds for a CPU boost, wields a Surface-style keyboard
Believe it or not, Inhon has a wilder concept up its sleeve than the extra-light Blade 13 Carbon laptop. Its equally new Carbon Tablet at first looks like it could pass for an IdeaPad Yoga, but the non-display half has little to do with input this time around — besides USB 3.0 and Mini DisplayPort jacks, it’s mostly about giving some breathing room to the Core i3, i5 or i7 inside. Keep the Windows 8 PC closed and it runs in a slower but quieter mode for handheld use; unfold it for some serious desk work, however, and a cooling fan inside ramps up to run the processor at TurboBoost speeds. Anyone who wants more traditional interaction has to attach an optional, Touch Cover-like keyboard and trackpad combo. We don’t entirely grasp the logic when a convertible laptop might have done the trick, although estimated prices between NT $ 29,999 and NT $ 39,999 ($ 1,007 to $ 1,343 US) for the eventual launch in Taiwan will make it at least somewhat feasible to try Inhon’s latest design experiment.

EE plans to double 4G spectrum allocation, will boost speeds in first ten cities by summer
While EE scrambles to spread its LTE network far and wide before the other UK carriers get into the 4G business, it also wants to flex some spectrum muscle. The network’s announced it’s planning to double the LTE allocation on its 1800MHz band (from 2 x 10MHz to 2 x 20MHz), which it claims will increase download speeds to an average of 20 Mbps, topping out at 80 Mbps. Ten of the 11 original 4G launch cities will be seeing this bandwidth boost first: London, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield. EE doesn’t want you to think it’s done expanding, though, and says it’ll continue to make use of its MHz and GHz by rolling out boring, normal LTE in new areas whilst doubling up in others. The first ten cities are due to receive “double-speed” 4G by summer, which we assume means around the time summer is supposed to happen.

NVIDIA’s GTX 650 Ti Boost lives up to its name for $149
By NVIDIA’s own admission, the lower registers of its Kepler-based GeForce graphics cards “couldn’t always tackle [their] originally stated goal” of powering 1080p games with the settings amped up to high. So, after the GeForce GTX 650 and 650 Ti, maybe the third time’s a charm. The latest card goes by the name GTX 650 Ti Boost, reflecting the fact that it brings NVIDIA’s GPU Boost technology into the mix, which can vary the chip’s clock speed as need allows. Stacked against the 650 Ti, this unit’s got 782 CUDA cores (up from 768), a base clock of 980MHz (up from 928MHz) and a TDP of 140W, (compared to 110W). Another big draw is two-way SLI, so you can pair up cards when your wallet regains its strength. On the benchmark front, NVIDIA promises you can run Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm at highest settings and get a frame rate of 62fps, an order of magnitude higher than the 39fps promised on the 650 Ti. Sitting above the 650 Ti and below the GeForce 660, the 1GB version will set you back $ 149 (£124), with the 2GB edition priced at $ 169 (£144). In behind-closed-doors tests, the company has found that it comes out on top against AMD’s $ 249 Radeon 7850, but we’ll be rounding up independent reviews shortly in order to verify that claim — as well as seeing if it can make the 7790 think twice about getting out of bed.

Tesla gives Uber a Model S boost at SXSW, so come on and take a free ride
The number of cabs per capita in Austin is probably quite reasonable for a city of under a million, but during SXSW, taxis can be difficult to come by, plagued by ridiculous traffic and a surge of carless visitors. So, to make our way from last night’s Engadget+gdgt event to our hotel — a roughly 15-mile drive north of the city center — we turned to Uber’s Android app. Selecting the UberX option, we were told, would net us a free ride, but we were expecting a clunky cab to pull up; instead, we got a brand new Tesla Model S, with a tie-clad chauffeur to match. The driver, we learned, was on loan from Dallas, while the gorgeous all-electric car was likely to quietly roll its way to distant roads following this week’s Central Texas geek fest. But we weren’t leaving Austin without our ride.

Sharp may be close to receiving a $110 million boost from Samsung (update: deal final)
Japan’s Sharp has been struggling very publicly for some time now, and many reports indicate it’s been looking outward for interested investors. While it already secured just such an arrangement with Qualcomm in December, rumors indicate attempts to reach a deal with Foxconn are in trouble and now Samsung is tabbed as a potential investor. Reuters and Japan’s Nikkei cite sources indicating an official announcement could come sometime today regarding a 10 billion yen ($ 110 million) investment that would net the Korean electronics giant a three percent piece of Sharp. This deal would be mutually beneficial as Sharp gains a place to sell more of the LCDs it’s capable of manufacturing, and Samsung cheaply expands its supply of panels, with a possibility of expanding their arrangement beyond LCDs in the future. We’ll wait and see exactly what happens, but those IGZO screens Sharp is working on could be popping up in some unexpected places by the time it’s all said and done.
Update: Sharp has just confirmed that Samsung is now indeed a 3.08 percent owner thanks to an investment of 10.4 billion yen ($ 112 million). It said the deal would “further strengthen the alliance (with Samsung Electronics) and continuously provide a long-term, stable and timely output of LCD panels for large-size TVs and small- and medium-size LCD panels for mobile devices such as notebook computers.” For more info, see the PR after the break.

Thin Film Solar Gets a Boost from a New Record Efficiency
Swiss researchers show that lightweight, flexible CIGS solar cells can compete with heavier, more-expensive-to-install solar cells.
Lightweight, flexible solar cells are great for some niche applications—such as powering drones—where heavier, conventional solar panels won’t work. They could also help reduce the cost of installation, which is one of the biggest parts of the cost of solar power, by making solar panels easier to install. But to take on power from fossil fuels, such cells need to be both far more efficient and cheaper to make.

Nanostructures Boost Battery Life Fivefold
The materials could make batteries that store more than twice as much energy as lithium-ion ones.
Some of the most promising battery chemistries—which, in theory, could store several times more energy than today’s lithium-ion batteries and cost much less—have a fatal flaw. They can’t be recharged very often before they stop working, making them useless for applications such as electric vehicles. Now researchers at Stanford have created novel nanostructures that greatly increase the number of times one of these chemistries can be recharged, even to levels high enough for many commercial applications.

FCC tells FAA to ‘boost US competitiveness,’ allow greater use of in-flight devices

The nation’s top wireless dog has told the Federal Aviation Administration’s head that it should “enable greater use of tablets, e-readers, and other portable devices” during flights, according to the Hill. That was the gist of a missive sent from Julius Genachowski, chairman of the FCC to the FAA’s chief, Michael Huerta yesterday. He went on to say that doing so would let individuals “stay informed and connected with friends and family,” while helping large and small businesses be more productive, which would “boost US competitiveness.” While it sounds like not doing so would be un-patriotic with a pitch like that, the FAA has already formed a committee to revisit its current portable electronics policies and hasn’t arrived at any decisions yet — safety first, after all.

NPD: Windows 8 not yet providing boost to slow PC market
Microsoft is pretty happy about how Windows 8 is doing, but 40 million license sales isn’t exactly translating to a boon for the PC market. According to NPD, sales of Windows-powered devices are 21 percent lower than they were during the same time period last year — October 21 through November 17. Of course, Windows 8 didn’t actually hit shelves until the 26th, which may have skewed the numbers a bit as consumers held out for the latest and greatest from Redmond. The weakness of the desktop and laptop market are partially to blame, but while license sales for Windows 8 are outpacing its predecessor, there is some cause for concern. Specifically that, after a few weeks, the touch friendly revamp of the OS is only shipping on about 58 percent of new machines. Four weeks after the launch of Windows 7, it was preloaded on 83 percent of new hardware. Worse yet, according to the NPD, tablet sales “have been almost non-existent.” Of course, things could pick up as we enter the holiday season, but it’s not entirely clear that Windows 8 will be able to lift the sagging PC market on its back. The full PR awaits you after the break.

NC State nanoflowers can boost battery and solar cell capacity, make great prom accessories
We see a lot of sleek-looking technology pass through our doors, but it’s rare that the inventions could be called beautiful by those who aren’t immersed in the gadget world. We’d venture that North Carolina State University might have crossed the divide by creating an energy storage technology that’s both practical and genuinely pretty. Its technology vaporizes germanium sulfide and cools it into 20-30 nanometer layers that, as they’re combined, turn into nanoflowers: elegant structures that might look like the carnation on a prom dress or tuxedo, but are really energy storage cells with much more capacity than traditional cells occupying the same area. The floral patterns could lead to longer-lived supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries, and the germanium sulfide is both cheap and clean enough that it could lead to very efficient solar cells that are more environmentally responsible. As always, there’s no definite timetable for when (and if) NC State’s technology might be commercialized — so call someone’s bluff if they promise you a nanoflower bouquet.

LG Optimus L7 leaks for Boost Mobile as the Venice
The merriment continues at evleaks, which just spilled another smartphone via Twitter. This time it’s the LG Venice for Boost Mobile: a rebadged version of the Optimus L7 that just so happens to sport a handsome silvery backplate. This is the second version of the Optimus L7 to be geared for US shores, the first being the Splendor for US Cellular. Absent any drastic changes, shoppers can rightfully expect to find an Android 4.0 smartphone that’s paired with a single-core 1GHz CPU, a 4.3-inch WVGA display and a 5-megapixel camera that’ll capture video at 720p. Unfortunately, pricing for the Venice remains up in the air, which makes it difficult to know whether it’ll provide much of a value proposition within Boost’s lineup. Likewise, the all-important release date is also a mystery, although with the carrier actively refreshing its fall lineup, a near-term arrival is certainly within reason.

Some people believe that Google’s practices when it come to search are mystical and unfair, or sometimes evil, but what the company wants to do is surface the most important information for you when you perform a task on its most important product. With the introduction of Knowledge Graph last year, Google started showing information on the right-hand side of search results to help you figure out if you’re searching for the right thing, be it a person, place or thing. Today, Google announced that it’s now filling up its Knowledge Graph with information about non-profits, which will help people find the right organization that they’d like to check out and potentially donate to. In its announcement, Google said that this is still in its early roll-out phase, with more information being added all of the time: We’ve just started to add information about nonprofits to the Knowledge Graph. When you search for a nonprofit organization on Google.com, you will start to see information to the right side of the search results that highlights the nonprofit’s financials, cause, and recent Google+ posts. Start following the organization on Google+ directly from the panel by clicking the Follow button. To learn more about related nonprofits, click on one of the organizations under “People also search for” and a carousel of similar organizations will appear at the top of the search results. Over time, we’ll continue to work on bringing more nonprofit information into your search experience. In addition to key information about non-profits, including their category and tax deductibility code, Google is promoting their Google+ pages as well. This means that Google+ could immediately become a hot spot for non-profits to find new volunteers, avenues for fundraising and more importantly, awareness for their campaigns and causes. While all known non-profits aren’t available in Knowledge Graph as of yet, it looks like most of the big ones are. You’ll notice that Google is also publishing the last Google+ post from the organization, allowing people to jump right into a conversation: This is yet another example of how Google has strategically, and with precision, started to stitch together all of its products to create a world where people can spend just a little bit of time and get better results and information quicker. It’s also an example of how Google+ has become the connective tissue to make all of these connections happen.
