Can Barnes & Noble Save the Book?

It’s looking grim.

I can be something of a Luddite, for a technology blogger. I recently jilted my iPhone. It took me ages to buy a Kindle, and I was a holdout on the iPad until I received a hand-me-down copy. And while I’ve come to love my iPad for short-form reading and TV streaming, and even for the occasional mid-length magazine piece, I simply can’t stand reading books digitally. I find my Kindle (and Kindle app) useful for downloading free books, or books I merely want to scan for research. But when I want to be drawn into the world of a story, when I want the full aesthetic experience a book can give me, I still want paper in my hands.

Barnes and Noble giving away Nook Simple Touch with every Nook HD+ purchase in limited promo

Barnes and Noble

Americans love a good bargain — especially, when it’s a twofer. Barnes and Noble, arguably the only real competitor to Amazon’s Kindle juggernaut, has just announced a promotion to get as many of its Nook readers into consumers’ hands as possible. Starting March 24th and running until the end of the month, consumers that purchase the Nook HD+ online, in-store or at select big box retailers will also be given a free Nook Simple Touch. The limited promotion comes hot on the heels of rumors that B&N would start to de-emphasize hardware production for the Nook line in favor of its content services; a rumor the company publicly shot down. Still, there’s no denying e-reader market share’s been an uphill battle for B&N, even if the segment is seeing marginal year-over-year increases. Numbers aside, if you’ve been holding out on joining the digital reading fray because of cost, now’s the time to make the switch.

Barnes & Noble dispatches Nook Bluetooth speaker through FCC

Nook brings Bluetooth speaker through FCC,

Barnes & Noble and its Nook may be the subject of many a rumor of late, but that’s not stopping the tablet-maker from its business — which now includes Bluetooth speakers, apparently. We just spotted this previously unseen bad boy lurking in the FCC’s antechambers packing the 2.4GHz Bluetooth bands and a rechargeable battery. That’d give some portable audio accompaniment to your Nook HD or other Bluetooth device (like the iPhone and iPod it was also tested with), though we’re not sure how B&N’s planning to market it. There’s now a listing sans photos or other info parked on its site (see MC link), so you might soon be able to read yourself to sleep with that free book.

Barnes & Noble Nook HD tenatively rooted for the paperphobic video

There’s no doubt that Barnes & Noble in love with the paper-like interface of the Nook HD+. Not all of its new owners are quite so taken with the retro chic, with the proof being XDA-Developers member verygreen’s early root for the Android tablet (and possibly its HD cousin). The preliminary code is enough to offer a glimpse of a more digital interface as well as teasers of a CyanogenMod port and booting from SD cards. Before racing to use the instructions at the source, be aware that the root’s usefulness may vary wildly in the near future — as of this writing, a familiar defense mechanism dating back to the Nook Color has kicked in that rejects the root and restores itself to factory stock after eight failed boot attempts. That there’s a root at all will nonetheless be a comfort in the long run to those who like the idea of a budget tablet without the enforced nostalgia for dead trees.

Barnes & Noble cut the price of Nook Tablet, Nook Color once more, really wants to be in your Christmas list

Barnes & Noble recently took the wraps of two new tablets, updating its range (along with everyone else it seems) in preparation for next year. That doesn’t mean it’s washed its hands with the OG Nook tablet and Nook Color — in fact, both just got another price cut. Starting tomorrow, you’ll be able to pick up the original 8GB tablet for $ 159, the 16GB version for $ 179 and the Nook Color for $ 139. With two price cuts in three months, anyone would think it was trying to get rid of stock. This still puts last year’s lower capacity model shoulder to shoulder with Amazon’s 2012 Kindle Fire (with ad subsidies), but with Christmas just around the corner, we’re not complaining about more choice for less dollars.

Source Barnes & Noble prepping seveninch Nook Tablet followup with 'incredible display' for fall release

This week may belong to Amazon and whatever information the mega-retailer decides to drop on our heads tomorrow at its press conference in Santa Monica, but Barnes & Noble’s apparently won’t be letting the Kindle maker hog the spotlight for too long. We’ve been tipped off from a reliable source that there is, in fact, a successor to the Nook Tablet heading our way this fall. The device is said to be “super light,” while packing an “incredible display,” rocking 243 ppi. Industrial design on the apparently forthcoming tablet will be handled by Barnes and Noble favorite, Robert Brunner of Ammunition, who’s already got some Nook design under his belt. All of this is said to coincide with a brand new video store from the company, in an attempt, no doubt, to take advantage of the aforementioned “incredible display.”

That’s about all we’ve got for the moment, but we’re told more information will be forthcoming from more official channels soon.

If Apple releases its first ‘iPad Mini’ next month, what can Amazon and Barnes & Noble do to keep the Cupertino colossus at bay, as well as the other new competitors in the 7-inch tablet game?”

In perhaps one answer to the question of how tablet makers will react to a more crowded market for small screen tablets, the L.A. The company’s Nook Color is also shedding $ 20, and will now cost $ 149. I’ glad to hear it; I’ve been using a Nexus 7 lately, and finding the size (like a trade paperback, including a protective case) far handier and more often used than any of the 10″ tablets I’ve tried.

Microsoft’s rumored tablet may be a Barnes & Noble collaboration with Xbox Live video streaming

Microsoft hearts Barnes and Noble

Rumors swirling around Microsoft’s mystery event on Monday have repeatedly centered on a tablet, but if TechCrunch sources are right, Microsoft may only play a partial role in the project. The unveiling, according to the claims, may instead be a tablet, e-reader or a crossover of the two built in teamwork with Barnes & Noble — a company that just recently established a vague partnership with Microsoft after many months of legal wrangling over Android and the Nook. The slate may not include Windows 8 RT at all, despite earlier assertions, but that’s not to say that Microsoft wouldn’t be breaking ground in other areas. One of the reported insiders believes it could be the first device without the Microsoft badge to get Xbox Live video streaming, which might explain Redmond’s eagerness to turn Xbox into a general media brand at its E3 keynote. It’s still very much unknown if there will be any hardware at all, although decisions to host the event in the media capital of Los Angeles and detach the invitation from any existing Microsoft division provide at least indirect support for the notion. Whatever happens, we’ll be there tomorrow to give you the lowdown.

barnes_and_noble_nook_tablet_1161200_g2Barnes & Noble has found a new, major partner in its fight to get an edge over Amazon and Apple in the heating up market for e-books and the devices being used to consume them: it is teaming up with Microsoft in what the two are calling a strategic partnership, name yet to be determined. It will come in the form of a new subsidiary of B&N that will include all of its Nook business as well as its educationally-focussed College business that will see Microsoft make a $ 300 million investment in the subsidiary, valuing the company at $ 1.7 billion in exchange for around 17.6 percent equity in the subsidiary.

The news leaves the door open for B&N to eventually spin these off into a separate business altogether — or sell them to Microsoft. And it leaves a big load of questions about what B&N will do next with the Nook, which is build on a forked version of Google’s Android platform.

Not a lot of details on that at the moment — the bookseller’s not spilling the beans. Given last year’s release schedule, timing-wise the device would fall closer in line with the company’s e-ink line of products, so perhaps the non-tablet Nook line still has a bit of fight left in it, after all.

Not to mention, it also goes head to head with the Kindle Fire, a device that’s sure to be one of the best-selling gadgets of the holiday season, thanks to its price and wide content selection.
