Sony’s ratcheted up its water-resistant device tech a notch with the launch of the Xperia ZR, a new 4.6-inch, 720P Android smartphone that’s waterproof to 1.5m (5 feet). Sony claims the new addition to the Xperia Z line will let film your snorkeling adventures in full HD quality with HDR in video or 13-megapixel stills thanks to the Exmor RS image sensor. The handset also boasts a Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core 1.5GHZ CPU, 2GB RAM, LTE, NFC, Sony’s Walkman album and movie apps and an OptiContrast OLED screen with Bravia tech to reduce glare “even in bright sunlight.” There’s no word yet on pricing or availability, but as soon as we here more, we’ll try to prep you ahead of that next beach-bound holiday. Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 announced, joins the Android tablet lineup with a 7inch screen

If an 8-inch stylus-enabled Galaxy Tablet wasn’t your cup of tea, perhaps Samsung’s new seven-inch model will do the trick. The Galaxy Tab 3 has gone official and the third iteration of the company’s first Android tablet arrives with a 1.2GHz processor, 8GB or 16GB of storage (with expansion up to 64GB), a 3- and 1.3-megapixel camera array and a substantial 4,000mAh battery. That 7-inch WSVGA (1,024 x 600) TFT display suggests it’s likely to be a keenly-priced slate, although we’re still waiting to hear on specifics. Samsung’s loaded up the Galaxy Tab 3 with Android 4.1 and says that the WiFi version will launch “globally” in May, while an incoming 3G model (no LTE at this point, but it’ll be able to make calls) will follow in June.

Posthaven Launches In Public Beta, Has Saved 850K Posts Since Posterous Announced Its Shutdown Date Of April 30th

6704601719_5c507cca0a_zOnce Twitter acquired Posterous, we knew that it was going to shut down at some point, as there was no way that the micro-blogging service would support a fully-featured alternative platform. Once we found out the date it was shutting down, then things felt real. If you were using Posterous to post pictures, video or random thoughts, you’d have to find somewhere else to put them. That somewhere else was Posthaven, set up by Posterous co-founders Garry Tan and Brett Gibson. The day that Posterous and Twitter announced the shutdown date, Posthaven jumped into action. At the time, Tan told me that the timing was completely serendipitous, as he had no insight as to when the decision would be made to shut down shop. Immediately, the service signed people up without even fully launching, even having problems handling the traffic at times. Today, Posthaven is launching its public beta and is available to anyone would would like to pay $ 5 a month to host their Posterous data, forever. Yes, Tan and Gibson have promised to keep the service running as long as it has users. The best part about Posthaven is that you can continue to use it just like you did Posterous, so it’s not merely storing your old posts, you can keep going. Tan and Gibson describe Posthaven is that it’s “he only safe and complete importer option available for Posterous blogs.” This makes sense because, well, Posterous’ co-founders would know the system better than anyone else. When I spoke with Tan about the public beta launch, he told me that since launching on February 15th, Posthaven has imported 850,000 posts, including photos, videos, documents and audio files. Tan promises zero corruption for the files that you’re bringing in as well, a pretty worthwhile reason to spend the $ 5 a month. Some of the other Posterous importing options have suffered issues like loss of original file names and even names from commenters, which Posthaven pulls in without a problem. The service is as simple as it gets right now, but Tan and Gibson are working on adding new features. For example, you can now create up to ten blogs with one account and they’re working hard to add post-by-email, commenting, multiple contributors, email notifications and a bookmarklet. These are all features that people who used Posterous will remember, and will miss when it shuts down on April 30th.

ZTE Open announced at MWC 2013, we go hands-on

Alcatel wasn’t the only one to flash some Firefox OS hardware at Mozilla’s big MWC event. ZTE was also showing off two shades of its new smartphone, the Open. The device will launch in orange and blue in global territories starting in Q2. It has a very handy 3.5-inch screen, meaning there’s no issues holding it in one hand but there’s not a lot of premium feel going on here. The plastic shell felt like any low-end Android device, though we won’t fault the grippy finish here.

Other specs (that we’ve already snuck a peek at) include a Cortex-A5-based Qualcomm processor that could be clocked at either 600MHz or 800MHz — we’re trying to get a confirmation on that. There’s also 256MB of RAM, 512MB of storage and a humble 3.2-megapixel camera on the back. The 480 x 320 screen itself is nothing to shout home about. Again, it feels like a flashback to those sub-$ 150 smartphones that did the rounds back in 2011 and while it’s not the flashiest spec sheet, ZTE (and Firefox) are pitching this at those millions of future smartphone users that haven’t already plumped for a mobile OS. However, the search function looks pretty pervasive, able to tap into apps, the web and more in search of the answer you’re looking for. Specific carriers will be able to add in their own apps (pre-installed or not) for its customers. We got a quick glimpse at a data monitoring app that could pull together your data habits and respective carrier plans — even if there’s no word on a US release beyond some time in 2014. We’re uploading a video right now — come back soon for the full tour.

Nokia’s Q2 2012 financials announced: 4 million Lumias sold, $1.01 billion dollar loss

STUB Nokia's Q2 2012 announced

The past three months haven’t been the best for Finland’s former world number one. Persistent rumors of the company’s collapse haven’t been helped by the three biggest credit agencies slashing the company’s rating to “junk,” and the Lumia 900′s violently slashed price. Unfortunately the results reveal that the company made an operating loss of $ 1.01 billion dollars for the quarter. The company managed to make €7.5 billion in sales ($ 9.2 billion, down .5 billion since the last quarter), shifting four million Lumia handsets in the process. In fact, the only cause for optimism is that sales of the Lumia range have roughly doubled each quarter.

The number of handsets pushed out the door increased (thanks to the Asha range of budget phones) with the company selling 73 million phones. That said, the company has clearly failed to crack America, selling a paltry 600,000 handsets in the States. The cash pile has also continued to dwindle, with the piggybank currently standing at €4.1 billion ($ 5.1 billion), down from $ 6.3 billion in Q1, despite getting a further $ 250 million in kickbacks from Microsoft. Unsurprisingly, the prediction for the third quarter of the year was similarly dour, summed up rather euphemistically as “difficult.”

Agility 4 SSD from OCZ announced, already in stock at $150

agility-4-ssd-ocz-announced-in-stock-at-150 SSD makers often try to wow us with raw MB/S, but OCZ is talking up “enterprise-level” reliability, ops per second, and throughput equally with its new SATA III 6Gbps Agility 4. The 64GB / 128GB / 256GB / 512GB drives — with Marvell-built Indilinx Everest 2 controllers — have middling max read/write throughput of 400 MB/s and 48,000 IOPS / 85,000 IOPS, respectively. But with Indilinx Ndurance 2.0 technology and no data compression, they claim that the NAND memory will last “well beyond” the manufacturer’s specs — without backing that up with actual figures. Prices seem steep at Amazon next to the competition, but could drop when they hit the streets in volume. So, if you’re after an all-rounder instead of a sprinter, check the PR after the break.
