The Mermaids of Los Angeles: A Dumbphone in Exile

On a desert journey, coffee-scented oases of WiFi.

As loyal readers already know, a few months ago I embarked upon an experiment: I junked my iPhone. Surprising even myself, at the end of the appointed month, I decided not to go back to it. Currently, I make do with a very basic Alcatel phone, together with a hand-me-down dataless Verizon iPhone that I use as a de facto iPod Touch.

Los Angeles Maps Electricity Use at the Block Level

Interactive Data Visualization App Sheds Light on Energy Use and Inefficient Buildings.

Most buildings waste energy but how inefficient one building is compared to others is difficult to know. At a city level, choosing which buildings are ripe for efficiency upgrades is even harder.

Space Shuttle Endeavor Lands In Los Angeles After Final Flight

Today the space shuttle Endeavor completed its final ferry flight, landing in Los Angeles, California after leaving Edwards Air Force Base earlier today. The shuttle will now undergo preparations for its journey through the streets of L.A. (at a cost of 400+ trees) to its final resting place at the California Science Center. It’ll go on public display October 30. Endeavor spent over 296 days in space throughout 25 missions, comprising 4,671 orbits that added up to over 197 million kilometers of travel. Slashdot’s own Kaushik Acharya was at the Griffith Observatory in L.A. for the flyover, and he provided some great pictures of Endeavor’s passing.

Shuttle Endeavour Embarking to Los Angeles Museum

Endeavour will be the second of NASA’s space shuttles to leave the Kennedy Space Center. The ship will piggyback on top of a specially modified 747 and head to a Los Angeles museum this week. From the article: “Endeavour’s lifespan was relatively short by shuttle standards – 25 missions over 20 years, totaling 299 days in space.

But those flights ran the gamut of orbital odysseys, including the sheer moxie of its May 1992 debut when three astronauts made an impromptu and unprecedented spacewalk to rescue a stranded Intelsat communications satellite.”

What Los Angeles Accelerators Want: Startups That Make Money Right Away

silicon-beach-fest-2012-santa-monica-venice-sbf-logo-digital-laWhen asked what is the biggest difference between Los Angeles and Silicon Valley accelerators, five from LA told me they’re more focused on startups that don’t take years to start monetizing. Leaders from Amplify, Launchpad LA, MuckerLab, Start Engine, and Originate Labs convened at this weekend’s Silicon Beach Festival in Venice, California. They explained that since there’s less capital down South, they’re less concentrated on long-term plays, even ones that could return bigger multiples down the line.

So Bay Area startups in ecommerce, media, advertising, and fashion looking to raise money or enter an accelerator might consider a drive down the Pacific Coast Highway.

Live from Microsoft’s mystery press conference in Los Angeles!

When Microsoft calls a last-minute press conference to make a “major” announcement, there’s only one sensible thing to do: pack your bags, fly to Los Angeles and get ready to hear what Ballmer & Co. have to say. With no hints whatsoever (not even a cheekily worded invitation!), we’ve nothing but speculation and rumors to guide us as we head into this news conference. Will we hear about Win8 tablets — specifically, a Kindle Fire competitor running Windows RT? Or maybe today’s news elaborates on Xbox Music? All we know is that it won’t have anything to do with Windows Phone, seeing as how Microsoft is holding another press event just two days from now where it’s promised to give us a sneak peek at Apollo. Oh-so mysterious of Redmond, and all the more reason for us to host a liveblog. The doors here open at 3:30pm local time, so stay tuned as we bring you up-to-the-minute coverage on Microsoft’s big reveal.
