Windows 8 [Demo][Review][HD]

Software, Tablet PCs Microsoft unveils Windows 8 (video) By Sean Hollister posted Jun 1st 2011 7:05PM Breaking News We’re live from Microsoft Windows president Steven Sinofsky’s keynote at D9, and there’s something rather exciting on stage — a pair of experimental Windows 8 dev boards running an OS that looks very much like Windows Phone 7′s Metro UI. All Things D actually sat down with the man earlier today and got a sneak peek at what to expect starting with the live tiled screen you see above — and yes, like Windows Phone 7, this OS is designed for touch. There’ll be two kinds of applications for Windows 8, one that runs in a traditional desktop, and the other pseudo-mobile apps based on HTML5 and Javascript, but both environments — rather, the entire OS — have been designed from the ground up for touchscreen use. Keyboard and mouse will still be options for both sets of programs, but there are multiple virtual sets of keys for different form factors, including a split keyboard for vertical slate use. Multitasking is simply a matter of swiping running apps into the center of the screen, and you can pull windows partway to “snap” them in place alongside other windows — even mixing and matching traditional desktop programs with web apps simultaneously (like Twitter alongside your spreadsheet). There’s a new version of Internet Explorer 10 (which runs Silverlight) and an app store built into the touchscreen interface, along with integrated services like Office 365

  1. Why are people hating on the UI? It looks amazing

  2. @ProRiverside yes, there will still be the task bar and traditional desktop. This will just be a layer on top of Windows optimized for touchscreen and according to msft, a traditional keyboard and mouse. I think it looks interesting and pretty cool. We’ll have to wait and see. It looks extremely smooth and it looks like it works, all we have to see is how people put this to use.

  3. HuH! ? THERE IS WINDOWS 8! ???????

  4. Man I hope Linux starts getting more support :P .

  5. apple=done

  6. this looks shit..
    so theres no task bar?

  7. All the concepts better than this :(

  8. They with cloud really want to control us…

  9. @myxboxwasfree Yes, but why I buy it? Cuz it know how to use touchscreen? And if it’s right that you say what will happen in “windows 9″? There won’t normal mouse and keyboard support I think. MS will worse than Apple but I don’t like Apple…

  10. @CodeJBDA I’m live in Hungary and I have the most expensive internet-pack: that limited to 5gb. And can download 256kb/s but they say that its can download with 512kb/s. In America so much people don’t have good internet and the most countries people haven’t net. And they think that it’s a good system: everything on net, they will has our own indentity, and in cloud I haven’t got really my files. If I buy on net, that happens before. And when I reinstall my OS, they think will I download 200gb?

  11. So let’s watch new start panel:
    - Weather show is good but win7 know that too
    - Twitter and facebook is a big 0, so it know nothing
    - Messages… why I’m on always on net? And what about those people who don’t have net…
    - IE… I wrote before
    - Media Player. Just worse than 12 or 11… or 10->5
    - Store: If they do finally a good program and freeware that’s right but I won’t buy on net where they has my own datas…
    - More news aren’t! It’s a big media center that has a really disgusting UI.

  12. @morph995 Touchscreen will compliment the mouse and keyboard. It is not efficient or ergonomic enough to replace them.

  13. microsoft are becoming a socially cooprative company not just for the man but for the world and windows 8 should be amazing but what you say is true windows vista was seen as the future of technology but every one knows now that it is a badly cast shadow of windows 7

  14. It looks like a computer interface you would find in a library or college, pretty boring and too similar to Media centre. That keyboard screen looks terrible. I hope that they jazz it up a bit and make it much more customisable, I see nothing here that beats the ipad so MS better get it right this time because the world doesn’t need another Vista. Last chance Microsoft.

    @8Corei7 THAT IS THE QUESTION!

  16. BUT WILL IT BLEND ?

  17. Would it run on hp touchsmart?

  18. Hope They make something like windows XP light on your system, user friendly…optimized.

  19. Should be called Windows Touch. No one is really going to take to this. The whole thing looks like a catalog.

  20. So win 8 will still run exe files?

  21. @secretbutcher Yea, for MS to totally ditch what has CLEARLY worked for the PC would be retarted!

  22. @TravisMeeks6 Aren’t programs really just apps?

  23. @morph995 IMO I don’t foresee that happening anytime soon, I mean maybe for you wherever you live, but here in South Africa where I live, it could take a WHILE, I mean at home I download files at max 40kb/s, and my online gaming varies been ok and terrible, so for people to trust cloud computing would mean that we’d need world class internet which most of the world doesn’t have. And seriously would you actually be keen on buying a diff controller for every game you buy??

  24. @CodeJBDA all games in the future will be played in the cloud on the internet…you won’t have a hard drive on your computer in the future…you will probably have specialized game controllers for those things…they won’t be a keyboard and mouse

  25. @morph995 Sorry buddy, but I don’t see the M&K going anywhere any time soon, especially with games still being in existence
